I quit drinking three months ago. I don’t feel any different.

Was a heavy drinker for years and was putting on weight. Cut out the booze a few months ago and increased my activity. Has helped with weight but don’t feel clearer or have a better outlook. In fact things seem more frustrating now than before. Anyone experience similar?

I’m a heavy drinker who has quit for a couple months here and there. It is disheartening because I would expect to feel better physically and mentally and also for me, that’s not the case. Just the same. I do feel more rested when I don’t drink but that’s about it.

Cutting out alcohol is not going to change your "outlook". You can eliminate alcohol from your life but until you make wholesale changes you will not find that you are automatically a different person. I'm not. I know I'm not. I am just not ready (financially) to do what I need to do to completely change my life, even though alcohol is no longer a part of it. I still feel like shit, am angry all the time, have a really piss poor outlook on the future. I was the same way when I was drinking. My life change will involve leaving Northern Virginia, reconnecting with a more simple life, eliminating getting wrapped up in all the media and political bullshit. I want to get back to living for myself and not concern myself with what modern society tries to convince everyone is the way you need to be living. A couple more years and I will be there and certainly not here. I figure I have about 20 years left to live, and I certainly will not be spending that time paying a lick of attention to social media, mainstream media, politics and the stupid drama that people seem allow to define their lives.

You need to change the underlying behavior which led you to drink in the first place. Start meditating and exercising.

Silly fool thinks he needs MONEY to escape NOVA... And needs MONEY to find a simple life.. I didn't even have enough gas to money to get where I wanted to go when I split but I made it. Never looking back either (except to troll here) The rest of the country is much cheaper and now scenic too... Pack your bags and run while you still can.

Sounds like you have a plan. In my case there’s a bad marriage, kids, and not enough money to fund separate households. I guess you could say there are “outlook” issues here as well. Hard to be positive with all the complaining, negativity, and criticizing.

Man weed is just a cleaner buzz overall with less hangover. And it actually helps me escape the thoughts that make me miserable. Really booze just amplifies my negative thinking in the long run.

all the vendors on this site are legit, they deliver anywhere in the district. cannabear is my favorite thanks to their prompt service. if youre scared bring it back over the bridge just buy an eighth and spend the day blazed at the zoo and museums. watching the otters is the best when youre stoned but the giraffes just look weird if youre really super gone

Switching to weed or moving away from NoVA won't solve your problems. Wherever you go, there you are.

Extremely typical of people with personality disorders. I'd suspect a cluster B if you're sad and angry with a tendency towards alcohol abuse.

Takes a year to 18 months granted you have a plan. Your brain was stunted at the time you started drinking. Plus you need to modify your diet and exercise and examine your shit. Otherwise yes it will be more frustrating.

Love him or hate him, one reason Donald Trump can keep the schedule he keeps at his age is because he doesn't drink. At all. He doesn't lord it over people, but not drinking now pays well later when you're in your 70s. #livelongandprosper

I appreciate what AA is trying to do and am really glad that some people are able to get what they need from the program. Unfortunately, I just cannot get past the religious aspect of the program. I do not fault anyone who embraces religion, it is just not for me. I also think my personality does not lend itself to group type therapy. That leaves me to pay $$$$ for any type of one on one therapy once I am ready to enter that phase of my life.

Sorry guys but reading through this -- if someone decides to stop drinking, or cut way back for that matter, how come they are automatically an alcoholic and need to join a self help group? Isn't that for those folks who want to stop but can't?

They aren't necessarily. Though if you have stopped drinking and your life still sucks, AA is helpful as a form of free group therapy.

AA is NOT religious. What you may be misinterpreting is that one of the “steps” is to acknowledge, in essence, that YOU are not god. If you find that difficult, you should probably continue drinking.

If you life sucks alcohol and other drugs can mask the pain. They do nothing towards getting rid of its underlying causes. When the alcohol or drugs go away the pain comes rushing back if you cannot get away from its causes. Which most people can't or won't. It should not be a surprise that the relapse rate among former drinkers and drug users is so high. The surprise should be that the success rate is as high as it is.

They've done studies on alcohol recidivism/relapse rates, and the success rate with or without AA hovers around 1-3%. So AA isn't going to give you a better chance at recovery, statistically speaking.

What it will do, is put you in contact with people that have been through what you're going through and remind you that you're not alone. That's the benefit of AA, at least in opinion.

Re: I quit drinking three months ago. I don’t feel any different.

The success rate within AA is that 1 in 3 make it to the 1st year sober. Out of those who make it to 1 year, 1 in 3 make it to 5 years sober. After that, the odds get better. Most of those who make it to 1 year then slip do make it back and eventually achieve long term sobriety

1 in 3 isn't much of a success rate, but, it is the most successful out there. Those who try to do it alone do have the 1% to 3% rate cited somewhere else in this thread.

You don't necessarily have to believe in God to succeed in AA. You simply need to believe that there's a power greater than you out there, whatever you're going to call it or conceive of it as.

I believe that being an alcoholic has zero to do with how much you drink. It deals with the NEED to drink and the inability to stop. One can drink a 6 pack every day and not be an alcoholic. And someone may only drink once a month AND be an alcoholic. My best friend drinks 6-8 beers every night for months at a time. BUT then he will get bored with drinking and go two or three months in a row and wont drink a drop. He is of course abusing alcohol, but he does not meet the criteria for alcoholism. Here I found an informative article on this issue - https://addictionresource.com/alcohol/treatment/how-to-quit-drinking/ . Maybe helpful for you.

What you need is a better outlook on life. I stopped drinking after I stopped going to AA. Went to one detox and treatment three times, once involuntary with a .04 alcohol content. I haven't had anything to drink in 25 years. 3 DUI's and 7 other alcohol related arrests.

I did alot of running and exercise. You need to find something else to fill the void.

The best thing I do now, is start the day listening to the uplifting music of Meade Skelton. He is such a positive influence. If you have the urge to drink, listen to his song Clean Living. I know I will never have the talent or be as successful as Meade but he gives great insight into life on his vlogs. He inspired me to join Planet Fitness.
