Aaron Altherr has a lower ERA, a lower WHIP and has struck out more batters than Trevor Rosenthal.

Altherr is an outfielder.

Rosenthal is supposed to be a "pitcher".

GF got a ball autographed by Anibal Sanchez.

Nobody bats 1.000, and even stellar pitching isn't stellar every night. . Hard to rag on Kendrick and Rendon the way they've played lately. But the team as a whole is still in big, big trouble. At dome point, they're going to have to admit that dumping Dusty in order to hire Dave Martinez was a big mistake.

Dusty Baker was not fired. His 2-year/$4M contract was up. Thinking that it would be a great coup for them to land Joe Maddon protege Dave Martinez, the Nats gave him a 3-year/$2.8M contract with an option for a fourth year at $1.2M. Returns on the investment in Baker were sizable. Those on Martinez thus far have been meager at best.

They actually beat the Dodgers twice in LA, not too bad considering how sorry they've generally been. I guess if yo u have all your front guys hurt, you'd be sorry, too.

Scherzer finally got another win; he deserves better. He gets his strikeouts, but the team don't get no runs to help him out. Roark had a lot of problems like that last year; glad to see he's doing OK in Cinci.

Strasburg did what you'd expect from him SUN: 6 IP, 2 ER, SO 7, 2 BB 4 hits; about what he usually does. Barraclough: inconsistent; some days he kicks butt, other days they kick his.

Parra's looking good. He got the only hit against Wun Hung Low. Ol' Wun Hung Low looked pretty good, yesterday.

GOing to see them WED and THU against the Mets. Should be a good time.

There is a big difference between winning the NL East when most of the other teams in the division are rebuilding, and putting together a World Series contender.

The Washington Nationals have never come close to building a contender, as proven by their 0-4 NLDS record. Contenders don't go 0-4 in the NLDS over 6 seasons.

Their corporate strategy is to put a good, albeit flawed product on the field, win 8-10 games above .500 and soak their fans for food and beer day after day. It is a good corporate strategy but will only win in the playoffs based on everything falling into place for them. This may happen once every quarter century but based on past luck the baseball gods do not want them to be successful.

You cannot build a team to go ‘deep into the playoffs.’ The playoffs are a total crapshoot. You can only build a team that, if remaining healthy, will have a good chance of reaching the playoffs. After that, all bets are off.

The Bullpen is a hot mess. They also cant string offensive games together. Soto can hit fastballs all day but the league figured that out and serve him up breaking balls every at bat. Robles is a disaster on the base paths. DOzier and Gomes are the new Danny Espinosas. They are good defenders but cannot hit worth a damn. I predict Rendon Gets traded for a pool of pitching prospects in July along with Max and Eaton. MArtinez gets fired at the end of the season along with Rizzo.

Dusty coached the Nats to almost 200 victories in the 2 years he was here. Did Harper have any issues with Dusty?

Maybe Harper threw a temper tantrum, and had Dusty terminated.

ya' do gotta' wonder about that one. Maddux is one of the most respected pitching coaches in the game. Rumor was that the Lerners and Rizzo did try to keep him, but St, Louis offered him a better deal.

Welp maybe they can take 3 out of 4 from the Mets, who are L5. Dunno though. Some talk among baseball people about have an "opener" rather than a "starting pitcher". Have Ross or Fedde open the game and pitch two or three innings then let Hellickson come in and finish up the rest of the game. Its unorthodox but its worked, kinda, in Tampa Bay, AND Hellickson has struggled with facing batters for a third or fourth time in the order. Im for it whatever kick starts the Nats evolution up the standings.

Two starting pitchers are terrible. Doolittle is the only reliable bullpen arm. First and second base are below average on offense. Two young outfielders learning at the major league level. Manager still is in over his head. Other coaches are average at best. You can't fix all of this and contend in 2019. Need a 1 or 2 year soft rebuild to contend. Use the offseason to address these issues when the cost is lower.

Another comeback stifled by silent bats. They just cannot get them going against inferior bullpens the way other teams seem to feast on the Nats BP. Can Rizzo pull off another trade like he did with KIntzler.Madson and doolittle seasons ago? I dunno, that three headed BP monster worked wonders and drove the Nats back up the standings. This years reclamation projects arent panning out. Bear Claw/Rosenthal/Sipp (more like SUCK, ammirite!?) are TERRIBLE. Sign Rendon already! God the HOLE in the lineup that is Dozier and Gomez at the bottom of the order is appalling. ITs like pre eye surgery Ramos and Espinosa all over again. Do Something RIZZO! EFF the 'luxary Tax". THe Red Sox blew through that on their way to a WS win! Dont be such tight wads Lerners!

season's in the tank & it's not even Memorial Day, yet (almost, but not quite).. On a related note, when Harper signed with Philly, all the butthurt Wash. sports journalists said he'd be hitting .240 or so by Memorial Day. Memorial Day is almost here, and he's on track for that, hitting .235 according to Baseball Reference Dot Com.

Several clubs looking at Rendon. No point in him staying here. The beaner manager needs to go. He's an idiot.

The Nats have no control here. Rendon's contract is up at the end of the season. He can leave as a free agent at that time if he chooses to do so. Do you people just not understand how all this works? If an extension cannot be worked out by mid-season, an out-of-contention Nats front office would be nuts not to trade Rendon and see if they can't get a couple of quality prospects back for him. Had the Lerners not nixed the trade of Harper to HOU last July, we'd be in better shape today than what we are. Never make the same mistake twice.

The larger problem that we have now is that where Rizzo was able from 2010 forward to build the club up into one that players in general admired and wanted to come play for, the Lerners' disastrous decision to bypass Rizzo in dumping Dusty Baker and putting Dave Martinez in his place has been like taking several torpedoes amidships. We're not respected or admired as a franchise any more, even by many of our own players.

Make no mistake, we still do have a solid core of young players under team control and both Carter Kieboom and Luis Garcia have big-time talent and may be ready for prime-time by as soon as later this year, But everybody else is going to be worth putting on the market to see what their value might be. Rendon would of course be Exhibit-A, but Scherzer will be 35 in July and would be very attractive to contending teams. He'll make $35 million in each of the next two years but deferments lighten the cash load considerably. Brian Dozier is on a 1-year deal, so trading him to the highest bidder and giving Difo and Adrian Sanchez extra time over the final two months would hardly be an earth-shattering move. Adam Eaton has two option-years left at what would be reasonable prices if he were healthy. If he's going well at mid-season, he'll draw some outside interest also. Opening a two-month window to look again at Michael A Taylor would be a good thing. His arm and glove are so good that even a little bit of bat makes him a plus player.

The biggest question of all may be over what Rizzo will do. Is he up for what by some other name will still be a rebuild, or will his relationship with the Lerners have soured enough for him to simply do some choreographed mea culpa and ride off into the sunset? Either way, the Nats are in a pickle here. They may be able to work it all out, and they may not. It's just a rather tough situation all around at the moment.

They used to have a good defensive infielder who struck out alot. His name was Danny Espinosa and he was a better defender than Dozier. If they want a good defwender who strikes out a lot, they can bring back Espinosa.

First game: 2010. Last game: 2017. Washed up at age 32. His career highlights will come down to a single series against CIN in 2016.

First thing they have to do is get rid of Martinez and his staff. Hell offer Maddox the job. He certainly couldn't do worse.

Maddux is currently the St. Louis pitching coach. He's one of the most respected pitching coaches in the game. Does he really want to be a manager?

Maddux would have stayed with Dusty. Chris Speier would have too. Might not have made any difference, but many think it would have.

GF and I are going to-day. I will look for "I MISS BAKER" signs. I was surprised enough that I never saw any after 4 July in the 2018 season. I am even more surprised that I have not seen any this year.

According to several Washington sports journalists, Rizzo wanted to keep Maddux, but, the Lerners were not willing even to match the Cardinals' offer.

I think Rizzo would as soon have kept everyone, but that’s rarely how it works once the manager is dumped.

Well, the BP try-outs are underway. The guys they called up were 50/50. Mr Mustache aka Bourque pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up four earned runs on three hits and two walks. He struggled to find the zone during the outing, throwing just 12 of his 29 pitches for strikes.
They Won a series going 3-1. That last game they shOULD have won.....but God damnit they cannot get Max a win. Patrick Corbin is already is the best free agent signings of the offseason.

A bunch of pundits over at ESPN and other baseball outlets have the Braves winning the NL EAST. I think the Phillies would have something to say about that. Never the less the Nats have a test going from Bottom feeding Marlins to moving on up Braves tonight.

Of the top five strikeout leaders in the National League, numbers One, Two and Four are Washington pitchers: Scherzer, Strasburg and Corbin, respectively. (SOURCE: baseballreferencedotcom, to-day, 28 May, 2019)

Scherzer got only six yesterday, but one per inning is not bad, all the same. Scherzer is getting his strikeouts. He gives up a walk or two, a run or two, he does pretty much what you expect him to do (although he did give up seven hits yesterday, but managed to pitch around most of them). Either his team does not get him the runs that he needs, or, he leaves the game with a lead, but pitchers like Barraclough come in and blow it for him.

Roark had a similar problem when he was here. Roark is 4-3 in Cincinnati this year, so far.

I am not a Nationals fan, but GF is, so we go.

Used to have no choice but to go up to 33rd Street, then up to Camden Yards. The situation with the Nats has gotten really frustrating here lately, but it’s a lot better than back in the old days. Fire Davey, and we’ll be on our way again.

Martinez was the worst hire in franchise history. And that's saying a lot for the tight fisted, hebrew National eating Lerners.

The MLB Draft is next week -- June 3 to June 5. That should open the doors for both Keuchel and Kimbrel. Might have to settle for a 1-year pillow contract and then hitting free agency again in the Fall. Either one would put the Nats over the luxuty tax limit, so we will likely not be players unless the Lerners decide to do a 180.

The Nats Signed another pitcher with "upside". Denanburg has yet to pitch at any pro level and Seth Romero has to get Tommy john surgery, are the Nats pitchers jinxed with this or what? Mets suck/Phillies on 5 game losing streak. The BRaves are OK/OK We go head to head with them a lot but the Nats failed that fight test last year. Could the Nats climb up the standings to AT LEAST a wild card slot by the end of august? Dunno lotta baseball to be played.

The Nats have long utilized a strategy of selecting damaged goods and other high-upside characters that have fallen to them in the draft. Rendon, Giolito, and Romero are all examples of that. Yesterday's Pick-17 selection of Jackson Rutledge may have brought them Sean Doolittle's ultimtate successor as other clubs drooled over the array of hitters still on the board. Picking off the #3 or #4 rated arm in the draft with the 17th pick has to look good.

The Arrow-Shooter was meanwhile not signed for his 'upside'. At 42 years of age, he has none of that left. He was signed to serve as minor league depth and a veteran presence in the Fresno locker room.
