Fairfax County quietly changes Confederate Park names

I’m no neo-Confederate, although I do consider myself Southern. But this is quite troubling, especially the end of the article that talks about Ox Hill.

Lee district Rec center is still pretty inappropriate but it is an improvement over Robert E Lee rec center. It is good to see that Fairfax parks and rec is going in the right direction. Doing right truly has no end.

Going after Marr and Stringfellow is too much. I sorta get Stuart and Lee but to start renaming shit based on minor characters no one even knows is ridiculous.

Wrong. Just one! Guess which one.

Sadly, today's people won't get this reference.
They will Google it, and still won't understand.

When I was in high school, 1984 and Future Shock
were required reading. We also read some of
The Gulag Archipelago. And we studied both logic
and the art of debate (and how to detect and exploit
bogus arguments and techniques). And we studied American History.

Today in that same high school it is more than 80% immigrants.
More than 70% are illegal aliens from Central America.
They are all on welfare. They study remedial topics at the
level of what would have been 6th grade in years gone by.
There are murders, muggings, and beheadings by MS-13 in
the park and neighborhoods next to the school.

Annandale High School. Annandale used to be nice.

I guess they will change the name of Stringfellow Road as well? Never even knew that was named after a Confederate officer and spy. Probably 99% of those who know about the road and drive on it don't know either.

There are no high schools in Fairfax County with immigrant student populations of 80% and there are no high schools in Fairfax County where the majority of the students are in the U.S. illegally. This kind of rhetoric serves no purpose other than to identify the speaker as an ignorant racist or a race baiter.

Annandale High School does have a number of problems which has resulted in it being an underperforming school. Some of the blame can be attributed to having a large population of either immigrant students or students whose parents came to this country undereducated and with little command of the English language. A much greater portion of the blame can be attributed to a number of poor and short sighted decisions made by the school system and the county that go back at least to the decision to close Jefferson and convert it into a magnet school. Given all the mismanagement by the County and School System it is not a surprise that Annandale is no longer the school it was in the sixties and seventies. The surprise is that it is doing as well as it is now.

Also none of this has anything to do with the current renaming effort, which doesn't even rise to the level of putting lipstick on a pig.

I always thought that Annandale High school had one of the better school fight songs around, back when they had those awesome football teams. I heard that now the song is performed by a mariachi group at soccer games. Friday nights during football season were special back then.

Erase the "slavers" so the new "slavers" can con all the public.

Dont let current generations know that the south rebelled against the Tariff of Abominations and overreach of the Federal government. Make believe Lincoln and Northerners embarked on an expensive, bloody war for the sake of freeing slaves even though the emancipation proclamation itself refutes that, as do Lincoln's own words.

it all comes down to money and control, then and now. And we the people need to look at the whole truth, including systemic racism this created and which persisted for more than a century, among many other things.

George is right

No. It is named for Henry Lee III, who was an early American Patriot who fought for independence as a soldier during the Revolutionary War, and later served as the ninth Governor of Virginia and as a Virginia Representative to the United States Congress.

There was some outpost down near Seven Corners that was manned by a small group of confederate troops following the first battle of manassas, but they abandoned it shortly thereafter. Alexandria had already fallen into Union hands months earlier. Other than the few incursions as they marched north, and a few raids, the confederate army never held parts of the county, and their govt in Richmond certainly never administered or controlled the area. If they did, the “front lines” would have been right here in fairfax instead of down along the Rapidan & Rappahannock where they were for most of the war in the east.

You’re right about Alexandria - it was invaded before the war even began and held for the duration.

Huge portions of Fairfax were held by the confederates at the beginning of the war, and after First Manassas. Which disproves what ‘get a life’ wrote.

I don’t think that’s correct. IIRC, a couple of VA militia put up the confederate flag in Old Town a few days/weeks after shots were fired at Ft Sumter, and the army came down river and chased them all out. No real battle or invasion. In the months after that DC and the surrounding area became one of the most heavily fortified places in the world.

The Virginia Convention passed the Ordinance of Sessession on IIRC April 17, but it had to be ratified by the voters. A few companies of Virginia troops took control of Alexandria. The day after voters ratified the Ordinance and Virginia joined the Confederacy several regiments of Union troops took control of the City while the garrison withdrew westward. The only armed resistance to the Union occupation came from the civilian owner of the Marshall House hotel who shot and killed a Union officer and was then himself killed. The subsequent inquest conducted during occupation determined the hotel owner committed no crime.

Except for a few days in July Confederates controlled Fairfax County from May 1861 to the fall of 1861. Control was then divided until February of 1862 when Johnston withdrew from Centreville. It came back under Confederate controll for a couple of months after Second Manassas. At times afterwards Union control
was effectively limited by Mosby.

Not really sure what you mean here.

The confederates pursued part of the Union retreat after 2nd Manassas, but got fended off at the Battle of Chantilly, then broke off their attack. Soon after that (days or weeks) they crossed the Potomac into MD. If I recall correctly, their supply lines were stretched to the max at that point, so they couldn't have been "in control" of much of anything in their rear. They finally dug in at Sharpsburg, MD a few weeks later, and after a brutal standoff (Antietam), Lee's army retreated back across the Potomac out near Williamsport, MD then down through the Shenandoah valley to their original position south of the Rapidan/Rappahannock line.

So at what point after 2nd Manassas did they control Fairfax county?

(I admit, it's been a few years since I've read any civil war history but this part of the war is pretty easy to recall).

After Second Manassas Pope withdrew into the former Confederate fortifications around Centreville. Lee tried to slip around Pope by moving his army from what is today Route 29 to what is today Route 50 with the goal of seizing the intersection at Kamp Washington and getting between Pope's army and the Union defenses of Washington located in Arlington and Alexandria. Union forces under Kearny and others engaged the Confederate flanking attack at Chantilly (Fair Oaks Mall area), and this in part allowed Pope to withdraw his forces into the defenses of Washington pursued half heartedly by Confederate cavalry. Shortly after McClellan shifted the most of the mobile Union forces north of the river to challenge Lee's invasion of Maryland.

At that point there are no Union forces in Fairfax County other than in the vicinity of Alexandria and Seven Corners to challenge the Confederate detachments in the County. This continued until the XI Corps advanced out of the Washington defenses which I thought that happened in mid to late October, 1862 when Siegel established his headquarters in Fairfax. That date coincides with McClellan returning to northern Virginia after Antietam. Perhaps it was the beginning of October. So maybe one month rather than two.

Why do you need time? There's no wrong time to do the right thing! Why doesn't the DC commission vote immediately to remove the name Washington from anything associated with the city?

Indeed, Christopher Columbus was a genocidal racist. Why not remove his name, too? No more District of Columbia! Rename the city to something more appropriate, like Obamaville.

Lose? What exactly did you win? Epidemic black and immigrant violent crime, broken social systems that can no longer operate due to floods of non-Whites exploiting the system, high taxes. And your chance of being killed by your fellow non-White is 8 times higher than any White man.

So again, exactly what did you win? Lolz!

Still better than the short lived inbred filled CSA. Well done America!

The "problems" you are describing are those of every nation. If they weren't, you wouldn't choose to live in the United States. The notion that people would be better off under CSA rule is nonsense.

You lost. If you are unhappy with your station in life, rise up and take what you feel is yours. Either way, we're all out of fucks for slaving treasonists...

Very true. It's hilarious seeing non Whites complain when their life under the White man is 100 times better than living in their own home countries, surrounded by their own kind. That's why they come here and continue to come.
