Movies shot in Fairfax county

The movie "Breach" came out today, it's about the Robert Hanssen spy case. It was surprisingly good. Chris Cooper really gives a great performance. Pieces of it were filmed on location at Foxstone Park, I wonder when they did that? At first I thought it may have just been a movie set, but there is a scene where you can clearly see that big radio tower in Tysons Corner in the background.

It made me wonder, are there other movies that have scenes that were shot here in Fairfax county? I can think of a few that took place here, like that Diehard one that took place at Dulles, but I don't think any of the scenes were actually shot here. And there was that goofy movie where Tim Robbins played a terrorist, that supposedly took place in Reston, but the only scenes I recognized in it were shots in Arlington & DC, not FFX.

Didn't that movie lorenzo's oil have something to do with this area?

Oh, and scenes from the morgan freeman movie "deep impact" were filmed in Manassas, IIRC, someone posted that here before.

I looked imdb earlier. It doesn't really give the specific scenes though.

That idiotic mini-series on Hannsen with William Hurt was shot around here a couple of years ago. Also, the Wedding Crashers has an ass-load of shots from the Virginia side of the Potomac posing as Maryland. I guess the Maryland-view of DC sucks ass.

Portions of "Contact" were filmed in Herndon. A couple of the old "Airport" movies were filmed at Dulles Airport. As someone else pointed out, your best bet is to check out imdb.com.

Haha, that CBS made-for-tv movie was absolutley terrible in every aspect of filmmaking/story-telling. I actually felt bad for William Hurt after watching it, a guy like him shouldn't be that desperate for work.

I think the opening scene in "First Kid" with Sinbad was filmed in Tysons Galleria (Tysons II).

Remember the titans was not filed here, it was in California I think. They barely got the uniforms right. You can tell the place where the car accident takes place looks no where like anythign around here. And the coches house: wehre is that

Its not fairfax but they have shot quite a few scenes in alexandria. Its easier to do than dealing with the headaches in DC and the houses look similar to the upscale ones in Georgetown. On the Xfiles mulder was supposed to live in alexandria.

Yes, First Kid was shot in the Galleria. There was more than one scene in the mall, including the climax where they shoot the bad guy by the fountain on the right-side end of the mall. Oh no, did I spoil a Sinbad movie? ;)

I'm pretty sure I've seen some real movie shots of the lobby of the CIA headquarters in Langley. (edit:IMDB says it was in Patriot Games and a few others.)

I watched Contact and didn't notice any of Herndon. What part was it?

The part where the alien was mowing the lawn in the background.

Not Fairfax, but years ago I remember several large filming trucks downtown. On one day, David Letterman was doing his show at the Warner, Contact was filming and Jodie foster and the crew were staying at the Marriott and the Xfiles (Mulder) was in filming in town. And that day it was pouring down rain all day. I remember X-files wqas filming Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning and then left. quickly.

The Xfiles was shot in Vancouver during it later seasons. In order to get Mulder to come back, he insisted the show move back to California so he could be closer to his wife. It was rarely "filmed" in DC except for some production people running around shooting exteriors of buildings etc and Fedexing them off to Hollywood or Canada.

Interesting enough, it is said that the DC area has had more films shot here than in Hollywood. Mostly industrial, government or military training films and not so much your Hollywood blockbusters. That is why it is called Hollywood on the Potomac. Another side note, DC are has more theater stages than New York City.

Re: Contact, they filmed exteriors and interiors of a home right in downtown Herndon. I was living there at the time and remember them closing down roads. It was on Grace Street I believe.

The trend now seems to film stuff in Eastern Europe. I know Cold Mountain was filmed a lot in Romania as just one example. They do this mainly because of the vastly cheaper labor expenses and no unions. Titanic and Master and Commander were both shot in Rosarito Mexico http://www.foxbaja.com/site/location.html A friend of a friend of mine worked as an extra on master and commander and said that Russel Crow got flown down by chopper from LA everyday for filming.

Screen Actors Guild and Actors Equity rules do not apply outside the US. Therefore, overtime regulations are N/A and they do not have to feed the extras as well.

Last ACtion Hero with ARNOLD SWARZANEGGAR in dc..

Yeah, part of it was filmed along H Street in Chinatown, I worked down there at the time and saw Arnold and his wife on the set. And last year I was outside of the State Dept. on a Sunday afternoon and there was a big crew there filming something, I asked a cop what it was but he said he wasn't sure, I think it was for some TV show. Stuff gets filmed alot down there, but I guess it doesn't happen too much here in Fairfax county, probably because it looks exactly like any other modern American suburb. Breach was the only time I've seen specific things from FFX county in a movie.

In the movie "the pelican brief", There are quite a few scenes with obvious FFX stuff in the BG, such as the GW parkway (a chase scene), and Mt Vernon.

In that colin farrel cia movie, they seem to also have used the same scenery.

The movie "Friday" with Ice Cube and Chris Tucker was shot just a hair east of Columbia Heights. I'm pretty sure "Barbershop" was as well. -§

I remember True Lies being shot in Georgetown.

Another one shot in Arlington/GW Parkway was Spy Game with Robert Redford.

Murder at 1600 all over DC and McLean.

Albeit not FFax Co...I was working in the Pentagon when they filmed a scene from No Way Out (Costner). I fucked off all day watching them.

Seemed like a waste...it was shot inside on the Concourse...a location that could have been very easily replicated on a set somewhere.

But in the finished movie, some other interior scenes purporting to be in the Pentagon were obviously NOT. Go figure....
