Two-plus new Great American Restaurants at Tysons
Posted by: Expanding choices ()
Date: February 17, 2019 12:56PM

Per GAR's FaceBook page this week...

We are excited to announce, "Patsy’s American" and "Randy’s Prime Seafood & Steaks" will be “coupled together” on Leesburg Pike in Tysons Corner – with "Best Buns Bakery & Cafe" opening next door. Named by children Jill, Jon, and Timmy Norton – and Great American Restaurants – in honor of founder Randy Norton and his wife Patsy Norton’s 50 years of marriage and nearly five successful decades dedicated to the hospitality industry.

This is quite an ambitious undertaking, but GAR has made even their few false starts work out well, so this should all be for the good. The newly reconstructed site is across the street from Tysons-I where Chili’s and On-the-Border used to be. Plans are to open the new spots by July, but after Labor Day might end up being more realistic.

Same menus. Different motifs. Excessively salted.

People ADD salt to their food, even though chefs everywhere use more of it than a typical home cook does. GAR menu items are meanwhile all developed and tested by GAR before showing up anywhere, and while Ozzie's Good Eats at Fairfax Corner does have several unique items, most sre offered at multiple but not all locations. Pretty sure you can get an iced tea at all if them though.

If you’re so much of a sodium-paranoid, stay home and make yourself a PBJ. You’ll need to leave out the peanut butter and bread though.

2 Tbsp peanut butter is 150 mg or 7% of my RDA for sodium. 2 slices of whole grain bean is 270 mg or 13% of my RDA for a grand total of 420 mg or 20% of my RDA in the PBJ.

Meanwhile, a pulled pork sandwich from Sweetwater checks in around 2280 mg of sodium or 99% of your RDA.

When it comes to quality, taste and nutrition, you're right, the best choice is to pick home over GAR every single day and twice on Sunday. There's nothing redeeming about GAR.

At all the places in the chain the food is too salty, but they aren't bad. The noise can be more annoying than the salt. The problem is the lack of alternatives. Springfield especially could easily support more good restaurants.

The Green New Deal would only encourage people to eat less beef, a pulled pork sandwich does not appear on the regular menu at Sweetwater Tavern, and yeast rolls have nothing to do with doughnuts.

Better read up on your future pal. We a facing a federally mandated vegan diet. Beef, Pork, Dairy, Poultry, will not be on the Gov't menu.

Yeah, my bad. It must have been Artie's or one of the other GARs. Again, none are unique enough or good enough to care what they are actually called.

Ozzie Rolls:

Flour
Sugar
Eggs
Baking powder
Butter
Yeast
Water

Doughnuts:
Flour
Sugar
Eggs
Baking powder
Butter
Yeast
Water

They simply told you they were called yeast rolls so your fat ass wouldn't feel bad eating so many.

Too stupid. Ozzie Rolls are a proprietary recipe maintained by Best Buns, the GAR component that does their in-house baking. You have no idea at all what that recipe is, though that won’t keep you from shooting your damned fool mouth off.

The dumb is strong with you. You're culinary exploits top out at a slice of Kraft American and two slices of Wonder Bread. Putting it in a frying pan with butter is beyond your capabilities. Ozzie Roll ingredients are just as described as confirmed by numerous copycat recipes and former employees. Eat it. I'm sure you eat plenty.

GAR ain’t what it used to be BTW.

Rather go to Costco, get some HIGHER quality steaks and some cauliflower and grill it myself.

Just like anything GREAT, it’s difficult to keep that momentum.

Mike's is the biggest money-maker among all GAR restaurants. Maybe one of these new ones will catch up somehow, but probably not.

Meanwhile, just about no matter where you live, a GAR place will be at least one of the best restaurants anywhere near you.

Mike's is the ONLY restaurant around. Monty's and a few Thai places are about the only alternatives. Tyson's Corner already has plenty of competition.

Including Coastal Flats right there in the mall. Then again, Coastal Flats is right across the street from Ozzie's Good Eats at Fairfax Corner as well. It's like a GAR place will prosper no matter where you put it.

This is terrific news for folks in the Tysons area, as we will soon have GAR options that don't require going through the hassle of the mall itself. Used to take the kids to Chesapeake Bay Seafood House over there back in the day. These days, Olive Garden is good, but a nearby quality steak and seafood place that doesn't charge an arm and a leg will be a really nice addition.

The meals served at GAR locations are likely pre-prepared by an industrial food supplier. The menu is a selection of fare that can be prepared by non-english speaking "chefs" that know how to operate a microwave oven.

High blood pressure stroke heart attack kidney disease all are increased by high salt intake you know. "Mike" could have died of old age also.

I don't need to know the reason BTW. I do wish food places would cut back on the salt, and list sodium amounts in the foods they serve. High salters can get it from the shakers on the table

Democrats shake their heads no, they just want all the guns grabbed the constitution shredded ask them. Wonder how many people die each year with high blood pressure

Not to ruin the mood but the ozzie rolls are not made Best Buns or GAR. They are a frozen product, allowed to rise, and then fried.

In the end you will now have 2 new spots next to each other to get these, along with the drunken ribeye, south western eggrolls, ribs with shoestring fries, fried chicken salad, and so on.

It’s true that Ozzie rolls are no longer made by Best Buns. With expansion to as far away as Gaithersburg, they are now made fresh each day at each individual location. So is everything else. While GAR is closed for instance on Christmas Day, someone has to go in to drop dozens of steaks into the special marinade in order to have Drunken Ribeyes available for Dec 26. It’s top-of-the-line like that across the board.

FYI, the same thing happens on Thanksgiving Day as well. All GAR locations are closed for the holiday, but someone still has to go in at every store to drop ribeyes for the next day. That's just the way it works.

LOL! 'Palate of a porcupine' made me laugh. Never heard that one before. As for GAR, I like Ozzie's in the winter and the Coastal Flats across the street in the summer. Toss in the Wegman's just down the street and I feel like we live in the ideal location! No real need to try out these new Tysons places, but if the early buzz is good, I might have to change my mind about that.

He didn't work there. GAR just named the place after him. Sometime later this year, a place named after Randy Norton is expected to open. That'll leave just Jim Farley as a founder without a place named after him. The racial profile of the clientele at Mike's hasn't changed much since the day it opened in 1987. As much cash as they rake in there, I think the owners are perfectly happy with what they've got.

That's true! (except for how Mike died though). I've noticed now that a majority of Mike's customers are black now, and the wait staff is mostly all browns. I remember when all the Mike's wait staff were hot white women, and the patrons were all white with a very small number of black people. Now it's reversed, and the quality and service there has gone down hill. Oh well, to be expected every time non-whites infest an area...goes to shit quickly.

Looks like the GAR admin staff and Restaurant managers are working overtime to rebuild the sullied reputation of the overhyped GAR crap. They must not like the fact that many people are onto the fact that GARs reputation is waning to those that know a thing or two about what constitutes a suitable meal. I'd say they are a half step above a Ruby Tuesday, but Ruby Tuesday has the salad bar and that is better than anything GAR offers.

There's nothing wrong with industrial Sysco food per se, and that's not a strike against the GAR chain. Overall Mike's is not bad but it is a bit loud -- not just near the bar, and so is Sweetwater for that matter.

Apart from various Oriental and Indian places there are few options. Monty's steakhouse is one alternative. It's in an unusual location (shopping center storefront) and not inexpensive, but the steaks are great. Otherwise just go to Arlington, Tysons, or DC.

GAR doesn’t use them, but SYSCO is basically like Amazon. You can have them deliver anything, from econo-grade to top of the line.

How fresh is the salt? Cause GAR uses a TON of it.

You will see many low salt or no salt canned broths and the most popular veggie green beans as options in stores. People are learning that sodium creates high blood pressure . HBP kills silently and causes great damage if left unchecked for years.

Home made broths or soups , all foods easy on the salt and fresh or frozen veggies are a better bet , but if your in a hurry get the lower salt options and you won't miss the salt. Everything I buy I check for sodium level and if one brand is less thats who gets the sale even though my BP is very good in the 120's to low 130's

The big question is why do these food places push the salt your way , get some sense in their heads and cut back. They can always offer different Salt Licks for the Salt Freaks. No govt regs need apply but any chain must have info on sodium if they have more then a certain number of restaurants and Ill say 3 up.

DAJAX's Low Salt Minestrone Soup You can add low sodium chicken broth or stock too with some veggie broth or stock

College Inn Veggie Broth lower sodium or no sodium 32 Oz 1 box or 2 or 3
Tomato paste low sodium 1/2 can per 32 oz OR Leave it out if you don't like it
Olive Oil 1 tablespoons per 32 oz
1`Fresh tomato chopped up
Garlic
Leeks
Sweet Onions
Potatoes
Cannoli Beans canned low or lowest sodium drained
Carrots
Fresh Spinach
Zucchini
Celery
Pasta different shapes
Black pepper
Grated Parmesan Cheese a little bit
Crisp bread salt but you got to have it
Big Green Salad from the "Green New Deal" I guess that's what its is right and its all free Im told so tell me what store has it

Sauté the garlic in olive oil 30 seconds in your soup pot , add the tomato paste and sauté 2 minutes on low heat , add the broth , chopped tomato and sweet onions and bring to simmer 5 minutes and taste add water to thin if you want, add the potatoes and carrots, simmer another 5 minutes add the pasta and rest of the veggies except the spinach bring back to simmer 10-15 minutes till pasta and veggies are done, add the fresh spinach the last 3 minutes of simmering and serve in heated soup plates with grated Parmesan or Parmesan Reggiano cheese , crispy bread and a big New Green Deal Salad

That's a big snail pasta to the top not a potato Lumaconi, they take 15 minutes to cook

you people do know that you will die with zero salt. People that exercise and sweat a lot actually need more salt, consequently if all you do is park your fat ass on the couch you likely get enough salt from what's already in the food you eat too much of.

Very little difference in the quality of the slop they serve up at GAR and a Taco Bell. Several hours later, they will both leave you doubled over in the crapper, surrounded by a foul stench.

An occasional stop at a GAR was great until diabetes crept into the mix. One would think that with as many outlets as they have they would have nutrition information available. Unless they have done it in the last couple of years, they don't! So no more GAR, eat at home where we know what we are eating.

I have eaten at a really great place south of a river here in Va cheap, a beat trailer shack but the food was so good I took a picture. Its gone now nothing but weeds so I need to find a new place.

How does GAR stack up , are the parking lots big enough for a tractor trailer rig. I like stick to your ribs grub and was referred by a guy from either Vienna or West Falls Church that I met on my summer vacation in Nantucket with the Clintons. Do they have any strong 100 mile truckers coffee to go

Fine dining typically comes with linen tablecloths. GAR isn't that, but it pretty much stands above everything else. Interesting food, quality prep, and top-notch service. Unless you decide to go whole hog, you can be be in and out in 75 minutes and for less than $100 for a couple, including a drink and a 25% tip. Those who can't fly that high will of course decide to whine about it.

Some (not all) Decent Restaurants in FFX:

L'Auberge Chez Francois (and Jacques' Brasserie)

Ciao Osteria

Clarity

Maple Ave Restaurant

Nostos

Amoo's

No reason to settle for GAR industrial vomit.

If you must patronize chains, stick to better ones. Morton's. Capital Grille. McCormick and Schmick's. The Palm. Texas de Brazil. Even Seasons 52.

Rookie. There’s no reason to pay attention to your outdated Google-slop. Have to wonder though how a “quaint kabob place” could have beaten out the likes of 2941, Eddie V’s, or even Sea Pearl.

I was sad to see both M&S and Legal Seafood leave the Tysons area, but the rest of those places are over-priced and just plain over-hyped. Better could be had for less at Ozzie’s Good Eats. Guess you’re not experienced enough to have known that though.

No, it's not any more expensive than other upscale places in the area, and truth be told, it's not all that good either. It benefits from the fact that Tom Sietsema is a fan of the two owners. For myself, I'd be more likely to dine at Bonaroti on the other side of the building.

I wrote "Some (not all) . . . ." Was there some word there that you did not understand? I was trying to give examples of decent places, not an exhaustive list or ranking of the best.

2941 is terrific and I almost included them, too. Maybe you do have a **little** taste. Sea Pearl . . . wife loves it (and the Four Sisters) but not my cup of tea. Better than GAR 10 times out of 10, though. Went to Amoo's with some visiting Iranians. I really enjoyed it; they raved.

As for Ozzie's . . . never been there. Been to Coastal Flats. Slop. Been to Jackson's. Sloppier slop. Been to Sweetwater's. son of slop. Siverado - Big Regrets. If Ozzie's is any good, it would be the lone exception to every other (POS)AR joint. Somehow I don't think it would stand up to Morton's, or The Capital Grille, M&S or the Palm. Or probably even Seasons 52 or . . . Maggiano's. Yes I did - I went there. And compared to the salted puke they serve at Jackson's, I would rather try to choke down something from Maggiano's.

I could GAF who Tom Sietsama is a fan of. The food is wholesome, nutritious, creative and delicious, at an affordable price. We are lucky in Vienna to have them and Maple Ave Restaurant . . .

As for Bonaroti . . . now THAT is overpriced. Italian food is not expensive food. You can dine in Michelin restaurants in Italy that are less expensive. But actually, some of the best meals I have enjoyed in Italy were prepared by older women running VERY tiny, unpretentious, dining rooms on the ground floor of their small "hotels" (really B&Bs without the second B) for dirt cheap.

You're the one raving over their corporate slop, and therefore quite clearly someone with zero class or taste.

For an experienced diner, there is nothing at all to be learned from you. You bring nothing at all useful or informative to the table. Ate yesterday at Pazzo Pomodoro in Vienna. Not sure yet about today, but disappointing as it might be to friends of yours, I’ll definitely not be found at any quaint kabob place.

I see the wheels are coming off the cart again. And while some may be either too poor or too cheap to have adopted it, a 25% tip has pretty much become the standard set by well-to-do patrons across in the area.

As for fish, it comes fresh from Jessup in the early morning hours each day. Prepped and ready for service by the time lunch menus are being passed out.

Make sure you use the valet- you won’t be in shape for any exercise after eating your 3,500 calorie entree plus dessert. So make sure someone else walks to your car for you, you’ll need to save up all your energy for digestion!

That’s so hopelessly lame.

I think I agree with you. I'm also a fan of traditional cuisine.

Great American Restaurants only enforces mask wearing for white people. Lots of niggers go around in there with no mask and none of the employees are allowed to say shit, but they jump on white people immediately if it drops under your nose. Not sure why these folks have become slaves to the niggers, but it's really bad.

The good thing about Maryland is that its full of such fresh Jessup fish and they are so easy to catch and release , theres always a plentyful supply and never any shortage with Democrats and a Rino running the state

I don't think there are many decent restaurants in the USA in general, that's why people eat in such places the most

You're probable right, but I think most of them just have no idea how many places with great food are there. Before I discovered this article https://s-r-q.com/downtown-sarasota-restaurants/ , I didn't even know there were restaurants that cook everything on a wood fired grill in my city, so I believe if people knew more about it, they'd diversify their food experience a lot.

Does anyone know which San Francisco restaurants I should go to? I'm planning to go to the Mission District of San Francisco.

Listen, I just found a site with a very interesting offer recently, and I think this is exactly what you need. What do you think about food tours? Check out secret food tours san francisco. This food tour will take place in the Mission District, so you can visit the best restaurants and cafes in the area, as well as learn more about its history.
