Gun Control Doesn't Work to Reduce Violence, According to the CDC and the Rand Corporation

"During 2000--2002, the Task Force on Community Preventive Services (the Task Force), an independent nonfederal task force, conducted a systematic review of scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of firearms laws in preventing violence, including violent crimes, suicide, and unintentional injury. The Task Force found insufficient evidence to determine the effectiveness of any of the firearm laws or combinations of laws reviewed on violent outcomes."

https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5214a2.htm

Gun Policy in America: An Overview (Rand Corporation)
"We reviewed thousands of studies to identify all available evidence for the effects of 13 gun policies on eight outcomes. After excluding studies that did not meet our criteria for establishing a law’s effects, we found little persuasive evidence for the effects of most policies on most outcomes."

Gun Control Doesn't Work to Reduce Suicides, According to the AIHW

In 1996, Australia Banned and Confiscated Nearly All Modern Firearms. According to data collected by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW):
In the 18 years before the gun ban (1978-1996) there was a total of 36,376 suicides for a mean rate of 12.24
In the 18 years after the gun ban (1997-2015) there was a total of 46,387 suicides for a mean rate of 12.67

Although the slight increase in the rate is statistically insignificant, there was a 27.52% increase in the total number of suicides during the 18 years after the gun ban.

It is obvious the gun ban had no effect on suicides. Hangings merely replaced guns as the most common method of suicide.

So what does Gun Control Do?

It Makes People Defenseless in the Face of Monsters. ESPECIALLY WOMEN

After Australia imposed a Gun Ban, Sexual Assaults Increased Significantly.

.

Yesterday, a terrifying scene played out in a Walmart in Springfield, Mo. A man pulled up to the store, donned body armor, and armed himself with a “tactical rifle,” a handgun, and more than 100 rounds of ammunition. He walked into the store and began recording himself on his phone as he pushed a shopping cart. The moment, complete with the the video, had echoes of mass shootings from Christchurch to El Paso to Dayton.

Panicked customers fled, and the police sped toward the store, but by the time they arrived, the crisis had passed. A private citizen described as a “former firefighter” had pulled his firearm and was holding the man at gunpoint. That thing that supposedly never happens just happened again. A good guy with a gun averted a potential crisis.

In 1996, 1997, and 1998, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted large-scale surveys asking about defensive gun use (DGU) in four to six states. Analysis of the raw data allows the estimation of the prevalence of DGU for those areas. Estimates based on CDC’s surveys confirm estimates for the same sets of states based on data from the 1993 National Self-Defense Survey (Kleck and Gertz 1995). Extrapolated to the U.S. as a whole CDC’s survey data imply that defensive uses of guns by crime victims are far more common than offensive uses by criminals.

The CDC has never reported these results.

Research conducted by Professors James Wright and Peter Rossi, for a landmark study funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, points to the armed citizen as possibly the most effective deterrent to crime in the nation. Wright and Rossi questioned over 1,800 felons serving time in prisons across the nation and found:

81% agreed the "smart criminal" will try to find out if a potential victim is armed.
74% felt that burglars avoided occupied dwellings for fear of being shot.
80% of "handgun predators" had encountered armed citizens.
40% did not commit a specific crime for fear that the victim was armed.
34% of "handgun predators" were scared off or shot at by armed victims.
57% felt that the typical criminal feared being shot by citizens more than he feared being shot by police.

Professor Kleck estimates that annually 1,500-2,800 felons are legally killed in "excusable self-defense" or "justifiable" shootings by civilians, and 8,000-16,000 criminals are wounded. This compares to 300-600 justifiable homicides by police. Yet, in most instances, civilians used a firearm to threaten, apprehend, shoot at a criminal, or to fire a warning shot without injuring anyone."

Firearms protect and defend far, FAR many more people than they kill each year... and the numbers aren't even close.

The PROOF is in the 2013 CDC Gun Research which Obama ordered after Sandy Hook (these are DIRECT quotes from that report);

(Armed citizens are less likely to be injured by an attacker):
“Studies that directly assessed the effect of actual defensive uses of guns (i.e., incidents in which a gun was ‘used’ by the crime victim in the sense of attacking or threatening an offender) have found consistently lower injury rates among gun-using crime victims compared with victims who used other self-protective strategies.”

(Defensive uses of guns are common):
“Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million per year."

The National Rifle Association's 2018 financial report shows that the gun-rights organization has spent increasing amounts on administrative costs while slashing its outlays on training programs and political advocacy, according to The Washington Post, which obtained the financial documents.

The documents, prepared by its external auditors, indicate the NRA's spending has increased faster than its revenues have risen and that it has run a deficit for the past three years — including a $10.8 million shortfall in 2018.

Overall, the NRA and affiliates had $412 million in revenue and $423 million in outlays in 2018, after $378 million in revenue and $379 million in spending in 2017, according to The Post.
Costs that have risen include travel and entertainment — from about $8.7 million in 2017 to $10.1 million in 2018 — and legal and audit spending, spiking from $12.9 million in 2017 to $33.5 million in 2018.
The NRA has cut spending on some bread-and-butter programs: Funding for gun safety and marksmanship programs fell from $42.6 million in 2017 to $32.7 million in 2018. Midterm election spending last year fell to $9.4 million from the $27 million spent in 2014.
Brian Mittendorf, an Ohio State University accounting professor who examined the 2018 report, told The Post that the documents depicted the organization like "a person living paycheck to paycheck."
The reduction in gun training alongside increased administrative spending "has me incensed," Steven Hoback, a NRA life member, told The Post.

Women will bruise especially on a bare shoulder. We would recommend a shirt or some type of padding.
Soldiers bruised too during a firefight. Combat isn’t a controlled situation

That would be your not "you're."

"Rangemaster" is full of shit.

Weapon Weight(Empty)(lb) Bullet Impulse(lb-s) Weapon Recoil Velocity(ft/s) Weapon KE(ft-lb)

AR-15 5.56 mm 7.0 0.86 3.86 1.66
Remington 12HB00 shotgun 0.727in 7.0(typical) 4.37 20.1 43.9

Recoil is tiny. If any at all, after shooting a lot you might tend to get more of a mark from the butt just rubbing against your shoulder than any bruising.

Six years ago President Obama commissioned a study by the CDC and the results were not what anti-gun advocates expected. Here are some key findings from the CDC report, “Priorities for Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-Related Violence,” released in June 2013:

1. Armed citizens are less likely to be injured by an attacker:
“Studies that directly assessed the effect of actual defensive uses of guns (i.e., incidents in which a gun was ‘used’ by the crime victim in the sense of attacking or threatening an offender) have found consistently lower injury rates among gun-using crime victims compared with victims who used other self-protective strategies.”

2. Defensive uses of guns are common:
“Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million per year…in the context of about 300,000 violent crimes involving firearms in 2008.”

3. Mass shootings and accidental firearm deaths account for a small fraction of gun-related deaths, and both are declining:
“The number of public mass shootings of the type that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School accounted for a very small fraction of all firearm-related deaths. Since 1983 there have been 78 events in which 4 or more individuals were killed by a single perpetrator in 1 day in the United States, resulting in 547 victims and 476 injured persons.” The report also notes, “Unintentional firearm-related deaths have steadily declined during the past century. The number of unintentional deaths due to firearm-related incidents accounted for less than 1 percent of all unintentional fatalities in 2010.”

4. “Interventions” (i.e, gun control) such as background checks, so-called assault rifle bans and gun-free zones produce “mixed” results:
“Whether gun restrictions reduce firearm-related violence is an unresolved issue.” The report could not conclude whether “passage of right-to-carry laws decrease or increase violence crime.”

5. Gun buyback/turn-in programs are “ineffective” in reducing crime:
“There is empirical evidence that gun turn in programs are ineffective, as noted in the 2005 NRC study Firearms and Violence: A Critical Review. For example, in 2009, an estimated 310 million guns were available to civilians in the United States (Krouse, 2012), but gun buy-back programs typically recover less than 1,000 guns (NRC, 2005). On the local level, buy-backs may increase awareness of firearm violence. However, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for example, guns recovered in the buy-back were not the same guns as those most often used in homicides and suicides (Kuhn et al., 2002).”

6. Stolen guns and retail/gun show purchases account for very little crime:
“More recent prisoner surveys suggest that stolen guns account for only a small percentage of guns used by convicted criminals. … According to a 1997 survey of inmates, approximately 70 percent of the guns used or possess by criminals at the time of their arrest came from family or friends, drug dealers, street purchases, or the underground market.”

7. The vast majority of gun-related deaths are not homicides, but suicides:
“Between the years 2000-2010 firearm-related suicides significantly outnumbered homicides for all age groups, annually accounting for 61 percent of the more than 335,600 people who died from firearms related violence in the United

The FACTS always scare the DIM WIT. Allow me to summarize:

Britain banned guns:
…..Violent crime INCREASED 400% …….Including a significant increase in (wait for it) GUN RELATED CRIME
…..Stalking INCREASED 36%
…..Sexual Assault INCREASED 44%

Australia banned guns:
…..Suicides INCREASED 28%
…..Sexual Assault INCREASED 22%

A 2002 study by the CDC of gun control laws found, "insufficient evidence to determine the effectiveness of any of the firearm laws or combinations of laws reviewed on violent outcomes"

A 2018 study by the Rand Corp of gun control laws found, "we found little persuasive evidence for the effects of most policies on most outcomes"

Yet faced with overwhelming evidence of their FAILED Policies, what do the DEMS propose??? Just MORE OF THE SAME FAILED IDEAS.

I think that owning a gun these days is a must. Of course, you need to be responsible enough if you are getting one, at least you need to browse through this article to know how to clean a gun properly and if you don't even know how to shoot, it's a good idea to take lessons before buying a gun. Storage is another issue which you need to take care of properly. But anyway, all those aspects are minor and being able to defend yourself is a huge advantage

There has been much hysteria in the gun community over the Supreme Court’s refusal to hear the case of Remington Arms v. Soto. That’s the Connecticut case brought by parents and one survivor of the Sandy Hook shooting.

Gun opponents (and most of the media) are crowing that this means firearms companies can now be sued into oblivion, and some gun rights advocates are similarly crying that the sky is falling and the Supreme Court has abandoned us. Neither of these views are accurate.

To understand, let’s dispel some myths.

First, contrary to some of what many TTAG readers are saying in the comments, the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) does NOT provide blanket immunity to firearms manufacturers. For example, if the gun has a defective trigger, you can still bring a products liability claim against the manufacturer if that particular manufacturing or design defect directly caused you injury. Or if a firearms manufacturer is engaged in price fixing or bid rigging, it is still subject to the normal civil or criminal liability for such conduct.

What PLCAA does say is that you can’t sue firearms manufacturers for liability arising from the criminal or unlawful misuse of a firearm by third parties. But PLCAA does contain several exceptions to this — one of which is the following:
an action in which a manufacturer or seller of a qualified product knowingly violated a State or Federal statute applicable to the sale or marketing of the product, and the violation was a proximate cause of the harm for which relief is sought.

15 USC 7903(5)(A)(iii).

We’ll come back to that in a minute.

Second, the Connecticut Supreme Court did not find that Remington was liable, nor did they reflexively find for the plaintiffs. In fact, it affirmed the dismissal of all but one of the plaintiffs’ claims — a claim that Bushmaster’s advertising violated a Connecticut state law that prohibits false advertising.
With respect to that claim, the Court found that, taking the arguments presented in plaintiffs’ pleadings as true (which is the standard for a motion to dismiss), it was possible that plaintiffs could establish at trial that (1) Bushmaster violated a state law applicable to the marketing of the product, (2) that said violation proximately caused plaintiffs’ injuries, and therefore (3) the above mentioned exception to the PLCAA immunity applies. It’s a very narrow decision that squeaked by the barest of margins (4-3).

Third, while the US Supreme Court’s refusal to hear the case immediately is disappointing, that was hardly unexpected or unusual. The harsh reality is that the Supreme Court takes up very, very few cases — even when there are clear circuit splits or obvious disregard for settled law. It’s frustrating and maddening, but it’s been the reality of Supreme Court practice for generations.
More importantly, procedurally, the case is at the motion to dismiss stage — the case has not been tried on the merits, and the Supreme Court rarely if ever takes any cases that are at this stage.

Compounding matters, the Connecticut Supreme Court majority (likely to further reduce the possibility of immediate Supreme Court review) couched their decision in terms of state law — and the US Supreme Court almost never weighs in on such state issues.

So, what does this mean going forward?

For the plaintiffs in Remington Arms v. Soto, it means that they will now have to prove, with admissible evidence, that (1) Bushmaster in fact violated the Connecticut false marketing statute, (2) that Bushmaster knowingly violated it, and (3) that such violations proximately caused plaintiffs’ injuries.
While I seriously doubt plaintiffs will be able to prove any of these, the third element appears virtually impossible to prove (as I believe the dissent in the Connecticut Supreme Court recognized).

As I see it, the plaintiffs will have to show — with admissible evidence — that Adam Lanza actually saw the advertising in question, and that the false nature of the advertising (i.e., the state law violation) is what caused him to commit mass murder and thus caused plaintiffs’ injuries.

That is, to say the least, a very heavy lift that I doubt plaintiffs will be able to satisfy or carry the burden of proving that at trial.
As for the U.S. Supreme Court . . . because the pro-2A community is highly invested in gun-related lawsuits, it’s easy to get intellectually lazy and see anti-2A bogeyman and stratagems behind everything that happens. Such attitudes are not dissimilar to those of college social justice warrior types who stridently and confidently proclaim that everything they see is the result of racism/sexism/the patriarchy/climate change/etc.

Calm down and look dispassionately at the facts and realities of Supreme Court practice and procedures, rather than simply assuming that the fix is in.

Would I have liked to have seen the Supreme Court grant cert in this case?
Certainly.

Was that even remotely likely to happen given the procedural posture of this case? No way.

Does the Court’s decision not to grant cert on an unripe case that turned on a state law issue foreshadow anything regarding the Court’s attitudes toward Second Amendment cases? No.

Now, if Roberts wimps out in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association case, I’ll join everyone in decrying the Supreme Court’s lack of fortitude. But the fact that the Court didn’t take up a case that anybody with a modicum of legal experience would tell you was a longshot cert petition at best signifies nothing.

In the mean time, everyone would do well to take a deep breath and calm down. There’s no indication at all that the sky is falling. Yet.

According to the 2016 FBI Uniform Crime Report Violent Crime Table 3:

Washington DC which was ranked as Number 4 for tough Gun Control Laws is ranked as Number 1 in terms of per capita violent Crime,
California Ranked 1 in Gun Control is Ranked 16 for per capita violent crime,
CT ranked 2 for Gun Control is Ranked 47 for per capita violent crime,
Colorado Ranked 3 for Gun Control is ranked 29 for per capita violent crime,
Maryland ranked 5 for Gun Control is ranked 12 for per capita violent crime,
Massachusetts Ranked 6 for Gun Control is ranked 24 for per capita violent crime,
New Jersey ranked 7 for Gun Control is ranked 40 for per capita violent crime,
New York ranked 8 for Gun Control is ranked 25 for per capita violent crime.

It appears that it is all over the map when it comes to per capita violent crime and tough gun control laws. How closely are these two data streams linked to each other? When we compute the correlation coefficient we have 0.047. If the value was between 0.25 and 0.5 we would say that there is a MODERATE correlation between having stronger gun control laws and higher crime (if there was a correlation between LOWER crime and tougher gun control laws it would be between -0.25 and -0.5 for MODERATE linkage). However the number is ALMOST ZERO showing essentially NO LINKAGE or NO CORRELATION between per capita violent crime rates and tough (or loose) gun control laws.

HOWEVER the story doesn't end here, not when one throws racial demographics into the mix...it turns out to be roughly a 0.5 correlation between the per capita violent crime rate and the racial demographics that make up that state. This means without any bias...there is a strong correlation between race and per capita crime rate unlike an almost near non-existent correlation between tough gun control laws and per capita violent crime rates.

In 1968, the U.K. passed laws that reduced the number of licensed firearm owners, and thus reduced firearm availability. U.K. homicide rates have steadily risen since then. Ironically, firearm use in crimes has doubled in the decade after the U.K. banned handguns. ("Weapons sell for just £50 as suspects and victims grow ever younger", The Times, August 24, 2007)

Police said two people were killed in a parking lot shooting on Monday morning
The shooting occurred at the Walmart in Duncan, Oklahoma, just before 10am
Authorities said a man shot and killed his estranged wife and her new boyfriend
Witness claimed the shooter fired nine rounds, killing the two victims in their car.

When gunman was confronted by armed citizen, he turned the gun on himself. If this was in California, there wouldn't have been an armed bystander and the murderer would have been free to cause more harm.

The Fallacy of "43 to 1"
The all-time favorite statistic of the gun-prohibition lobby.

By Dave Kopel, of the Independence Institute

Perhaps the most enduring factoid of the gun prohibition movement is that a person with a gun in the home is 43 times as likely to shoot someone in the family as to shoot a criminal. This "43 times" figure is the all-time favorite factoid of the gun-prohibition lobby. It's not really true, but it does tell us a lot about the gun-prohibition mindset.

The source of the 43-to-1 ratio is a study of firearm deaths in Seattle homes, conducted by doctors Arthur L. Kellermann and Donald T. Reay ("Protection or Peril?: An Analysis of Firearm-Related Deaths in the Home," New England Journal of Medicine, 1986). Kellerman and Reay totaled up the numbers of firearms murders, suicides, and fatal accidents, and then compared that number to the number of firearm deaths that were classified as justifiable homicides. The ratio of murder, suicide, and accidental death to the justifiable homicides was 43 to 1.

This is what the anti-gun lobbies call "scientific" proof that people (except government employees and security guards) should not have guns.
Of the gun deaths in the home, the vast majority are suicides. In the 43-to-1 figure, suicides account for nearly all the 43 unjustifiable deaths.

Counting a gun suicide as part of the increased risk of having a gun in the home is appropriate only if the presence of a gun facilitates a "successful" suicide that would not otherwise occur. But most research suggests that guns do not cause suicide.

In the book Point Blank: Guns and Violence in America, Florida State University criminologist Gary Kleck analyzed suicide data for every America city with a population more than 100,000, and found no evidence that any form of gun control (including handgun prohibition) had an effect on the total suicide rate. Gun control did sometimes reduce gun suicide, but not overall suicide.
Notably, Japan, which prohibits handguns and rifles entirely, and regulates long guns very severely, has a suicide rate of more than twice the U.S. level.

Many of the northern and central European nations also have very high suicide rates to accompany their strict gun laws. (Of course, if you have any suspicion that anybody in your home might be suicidal, it would hardly be a mistake for you to ensure that they do not have ready access to guns, tranquilizers, or other potentially lethal items.)

Putting aside the suicides, the Kellermann/Reay figures show 2.39 accidental or criminal deaths by firearm (in the home) for every justifiable fatal shooting. Now, 2 to 1 is a lot less dramatic than 43 to 1, but we still have more unjustifiable gun deaths than justifiable gun deaths in the home.

But just as many other people who would commit suicide with a gun would use an equally lethal method if guns are unavailable. Many of the people who kill themselves in firearm accidents may also be bent on destruction, regardless of the means. One study of gun-accident victims found that they were "disproportionately involved in other accidents, violent crime, and heavy drinking." (Philip Cook, "The Role of Firearms in Violent Crime: An Interpretative Review of the Literature," in Criminal Violence).

Or, as another researcher put it, "The psychological profile of the accident-prone suggests the same kind of aggressiveness shown by most murderers." (Roger Lane, "On the Social Meaning of Homicide Trends in America," in Violence in America, Vol. I, 1989.)

Without guns, many accident victims might well find some other way to kill themselves "accidentally," such as by reckless driving.

So by counting accidents and suicides, the 43-to-1 factoid ends up including a very large number of fatalities that would have occurred anyway, even if there were no gun in the home.

In short, the 43-to-1 figure is based on the totally implausible assumption that all the people who die in gun suicides and gun accidents would not kill themselves with something else if guns were unavailable. The figure is also based on a drastic undercount of the number of lawful self-defense homicides.

Moreover, counting dead criminals to measure the efficacy of civilian handgun ownership is ridiculous. Do we measure the efficacy of our police forces by counting how many people the police lawfully kill every year? The benefits of the police — and of home handgun ownership — are not measured by the number of dead criminals, but by the number of crimes prevented. Simplistic counting of corpses tells us nothing about the real safety value of gun ownership for protection.

Finally, Kellermann and Reay ignore the most important factor of all in assessing the risks of gun ownership: whose home the gun is in. You don't need a medical researcher to tell you that guns can be misused when in the homes of persons with mental illness related to violence; or in the homes of persons prone to self-destructive, reckless behavior; or in the homes of persons with arrest records for violent felonies; or in the homes where the police have had to intervene to deal with domestic violence. These are the homes from which the vast majority of handgun fatalities come.

To study these high-risk homes and to jump to conclusions about the general population is illogical. We know that possession of an automobile by an alcoholic who is prone to drunk driving may pose a serious health risk. But proof that automobiles in the hands of alcoholics may be risky doesn't prove that autos in the hands of non-alcoholics are risky. Yet the famous Seattle 43-to-1 figure is based on lumping the homes of violent felons, alcoholics, and other disturbed people in with the population as a whole. The study fails to distinguish between the large risks of guns in the hands of dangerous people, with the tiny risks (and large benefits) of guns in the hands of ordinary people.

But then again, treating ordinary people according to standards that would be appropriate for criminals and the violently insane is what the gun control movement is all about.

How to keep schools safe? We're focusing our time, energy and money on 'all the wrong things,' experts say
Jorge L. Ortiz, USA TODAY,USA TODAY 8 hours ago

Last week’s deadly shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, California, prompted calls for the increased installation of metal detectors at schools.
Safety experts say that’s precisely the wrong response. There’s a cheaper, more effective approach, but it’s a tough sell.

The recurrent shootings at schools – at least 30 this year resulting in death or injury, according to the gun-safety organization Everytown – has sent policymakers and administrators scrambling for ways to keep students safe.
Last year, in the wake of the massacre of 17 high school students and personnel in Parkland, Florida, Congress apportioned millions of dollars to cover the cost of safety equipment and programs.

Yet the bloodshed continues.

According to national figures compiled by the Educator’s School Safety Network, incidents of school violence – defined as instances that require a response beyond the institution’s regular capabilities – spiked by more than 185% from the 2016-17 school year to 2018-19. Over that time, the number of threats also rose by 62%.

“We are focusing our time and our energy and attention and our money on all the wrong things,’’ said Amanda Klinger, director of operations for the nonprofit.

“It’s difficult because, on one hand, we do have to have plans and procedures to respond to crisis events. Unfortunately, in this country, school safety has become synonymous with only response and only to that worst-case scenario, a catastrophic active-shooter event.’’

Klinger points out those kinds of episodes, which garner the most media attention, accounted for only 6% of school violence incidents in the most recent study, compared to 34% for false reports. However, incidents involving guns made up 24% of all cases, and in 10.5% of all instances shots were fired.
Metal detectors? Too easy to bypass, too expensive and too disruptive

One logical step to address the issue would be to keep guns off campuses, and a common method to attempt that is by installing metal detectors, which are often employed by some of the bigger school districts.

Saugus High, with a student population of close to 2,500, has a fenced-in campus and security cameras but no metal detectors. Demands for putting them in increased after the shooting.

Too real: Santa Clarita students made an active shooter video. Two months later, they took shelter in fear

Chris Dorn, senior analyst for the campus safety group Safe Havens International, is not convinced that’s a worthwhile investment.

Dorn said metal detectors are costly – proper use requires an armed guard – and tend to jam up entrances. They can also create a prison-like feeling among students, have been linked to diminished academic performance and, worst of all, don’t work well in school settings.

“There’s a number of ways they can be bypassed,’’ Dorn said. “Every school I work with that uses them mentions to me, ‘Oh, we see students do X, Y and Z to get around metal detectors.’ It’s very expensive to do it correctly, and it’s limited to specific environments.’’

Guy Russ, head of armed-intruder prevention at Church Mutual Insurance, puts it in starker terms: “The thing to realize is it could mean that the person manning the metal detector is the first one to get shot,’’ he said.

The best approach to keep students safe at school: Staff empowerment
All three safety specialists who spoke to USA TODAY advocate for staff training and empowerment as a better tactic to confront school violence, although they take different approaches.

Klinger’s group focuses on preventive measures like threat assessment and management, along with improving school culture. She said data supports those courses of action but acknowledges they don’t present well.

“It’s a lot easier to stand at a school board meeting and say to all the concerned parents, ‘Look what we did. We have an SRO (resource officer). We have a metal detector. We have these intense door locks,’’’ Klinger said. “That’s much more compelling than saying, ‘We have undertaken this difficult, nuanced, ephemeral process (that features training).’’’

Dorn noted that because shootings can cause so much mayhem in a short time – the Saugus episode took 16 seconds and left three dead, including the gunman, and three wounded – the focus should be on prevention.

He said technological tools have gotten cheaper and can help if applied correctly, and he vouched for random screening for weapons as a means of deterrence.

When those fail, though, Dorn said teachers and other school personnel need to be trained with realistic drills that require them to take charge in case of an emergency, not rely on the principal or somebody else for directions.

A perfect example of that were the actions taken by Saugus choir teacher Kaitlin Holt, who was hailed as a hero for guiding students to safety.
“What schools need to be doing is what we call staff-initiated drills,’’ Dorn said. “We want that realism like, ‘Hey, you’re on the spot, make a decision.’ But we’re not lighting things on fire.’’

Some will go that far. In its effort to help schools and churches prepare for attacks, Church Mutual Insurance has partnered with the ALICE Training Institute, which takes a decidedly proactive tack to training.

ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate, and the company promotes realistic simulations of emergencies and survival skills in critical situations, going beyond the standard “run, hide, fight’’ response to armed intruders.

A chilling conclusion: Attackers in almost all school shootings made prior threats, Secret Service says

Some, including Dorn, consider their methods too aggressive and likely to scare youngsters, but Russ said:

“We equate the idea of needing to drill for a shooting event just like we drill for fires. Some schools do that once a month. Unfortunately, the risk has occurred so frequently that we need to start adjusting our thinking. I suppose there’s always the possibility of traumatizing somebody with bad news, but I would much rather take a bet on having them be prepared and perhaps a bit uncomfortable in a drill than to not be prepared.’

What about good guys with guns?

Propagandist Michael Bloomberg has spent millions producing junk science to say that this won't work because it goes against his agenda. But real world situations have found that it works quite well.

In 1974, Palestinian terrorists took over the Netiv Meir Elementary School in what has been called the “Ma’alot Massacre,” which left 22 children dead and many others injured.

“The Israelis saw this and got busy,” according to Dr. Ted Noel. “They knew that the vast majority of terror attacks are stopped not by police, but by armed civilians.”

“So they started training teachers in firearms use,” he added. “Those teachers took out the bad guys in the two incidents since the Ma’alot Massacre.”

Noel wrote that once a shooter is no longer in a “free fire zone,” the situation — and the possible outcome — is likely to change, as he becomes a potential target.

“On top of that, he doesn’t know which of the staff might be ready to shoot, or where they might be coming from, as were others remain visible as a deterrent,” Noel said. “In short, only an idiot would try to shoot up a school with a trained staff of shooters.”

The results are clearly evident, as there have only been two successful attacks at Israeli schools since 1974.

The Left doesn't value children. It's why they allow unborn babies to be killed. The Left is cowardly. It picks on those who can't defend them selves like the unborn & the elderly. The Left is pushing this euthanasia agenda. Once it's allowed, they'll use it to exterminate the elderly. What the current Left doesn't understand is that it's in for a nasty surprise. Gradualism is a well known and used tool of the Left. Initially, euthanasia will have all these things built into it to allegedly ensure that only the person who wants euthanasia can get it. At some point. it'll get twisted and the govt will make the decision for you, lke it does in so many aspects of our life now. When this happens, it's the current proponents of euthanasia who will be "euthnanized" against their will.

Shows how dishonest he is. This is still a ban; just slowly over time rather than immediately. Besides, it only applies to law abiding people. If a gang banger or terrorist wants one, he will just steal one or smuggle one in. Only the law abiding are punished.

Here's a better one for the Democrats...

All of us have gripes and object to parts of the Constitution. Instead of going after just one small part, how about going after the whole thing and declare the Constitution "null and void" and unenforceable within the Commonwealth of Virginia?

Nothing will happen...

What’s the legitimate purpose of registration? It doesn’t prevent a firearm from being used in any way. All it does to is to enable this or the next lib governor to pass a law totally banning them and now they know where to pick them up. I’m not surrendering, moving out of state, or registering anything I have, and by the looks of it, I won’t have much that is legal. Today’s purchases for me are purely speculative. Officially, by New Years Eve I’ll have sold them in a PPT in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Chantilly. “No, Officer, I don’t have a record of whom I sold it to. Am I required by law to keep such information?”

I just picked up two more today and my FFL buddy says he’s been swamped with transfers. People are not buying just to get rid of them or to facilitate Gov Coonface to know where they are.

I’ll be in Richmond on January 20th and hope to see many of you there supporting the cause in defending our rights.

One victim killed and suspect shot dead by ARMED parishioner in Texas church shooting

One parishioner was killed and another seriously injured Sunday when a gunman opened fire during a church service near Fort Worth, Texas. Another parishioner shot and killed the gunman seconds after the incident began, according to officials and a livestream video of the service.

Jeoff Williams of the Texas Department of Public Safety praised the "heroic parishioners" who stopped the gunman. Several parishioners quickly pulled their guns soon after the first shot was fired.
Two people were treated at the scene and released, officials said.

Even the Liberal Rag the Daily Beast is applauding:

“Evil walked boldly among us,” Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Waybourn said at an afternoon press conference. “Good people raised up and stopped it before it got worse.” Jeff Williams, regional director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, said the attendees who took action “saved countless lives.”
The violence unfurled during communion at the West Freeway Church of Christ in White Settlement, a suburb of Fort Worth.

Video on the church’s YouTube channel, which has since been removed, showed a man clad in black take out what appeared to be a rifle and open fire. Then someone from the church shot at the assailant, WFAA reported.
