Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
My girl is absolutely positive it can all melt within two weeks if temps are above freezing most days. Not so fast, I say, there are some iceberg piles the size of small cars that have been made by plows. They'll be ugly, dirty and with us until perhaps Easter. This is a once in a generation accumulation, this shit will be here a long time regardless if it rains or goes above 32 and get's sunny everyday.
Now the streets and the grass may clear up in a few weeks, it already melted a little today. But I think it's very possible there will be some piles in the parking lots for a month or more to come. Wish there wouldn't be but this crap will be here a while.
there will always be snow. wherever you live you will always get snow at some point. that is just something that there will always be.:) :] :( :[........
IIRC, the blizzard of 96 snows melted fairly quickly. About 2-3 weeks after it fell, we had one of those odd 60 degree days that, for the most part, melted everything. I remember driving around Columbia, MD that night, and it was completely foggy from all snow melting into the warm air.
I've noticed alot of places around Tysons are now trucking the snow out. Not sure where they're dumping it, but if most areas truck out the massive piles of snow, I think most of it will melt in a few weeks. Now if they left those huge piles in place, they'd probably stay there until April.
We should pick a common area spot and run a lottery. Without a warm rain or lots of sunny days, I am saying March. I am remembering a week after the storm in 2003 we had flooding, so don't wish it away too fast.
There were still piles of snow left over from December in my neighborhood before the new snow hit last Friday. Unless we get a string of rainy or really warm days, it'll be St. Patrick's Day at least before it's all gone.
Never, we will get more and more snow, glaciers will form and D.C. will turn into a frozen tundra. Anyone remember when the snow melted after the 96 storm and they shut down chain bridge because the water had risen 2 feet below the bridge and old town was in 3 feet of water?
Ok, so not exactly as soon as the Day After Tomorrow, but these last storms did make me think of that movie - not that I really thought it was occurring, but I still drove to ffx every single day and several times to and from more than once a day.
The best part was driving 123 North when it was a white out and no plows had been around for a while. The road was no where to be seen and I had to navigate by signs on the right shoulder and center divide. That was fun - No Sarcasm. I loved it.
Tysons II has massive piles in the Macy's garage, protected from sun and rain. I'll add a pic when I get back to work and can send periodic updates if anone wants to wager on how ling it'll take to melt.

Ha, I saw that yesterday and was like WTF? It took me a few seconds to realize how it got there. That stuff will be there until at least April if they don't mess with it.
Is there some way the snow could be sent to Haiti? They get something new and exciting to take their minds off the earthquakes and we get rid of the snow.
Fairfax Corner trucked the snow across the street to their satellite parking lot. Fucking place looks like Antarctica. That shit there might be the last to melt.

There's a pile of snow up against the parking deck at West Falls Church station that is still about 15 feet high (or more). It's in a place that doesn't get direct sunlight, I can easily see that thing being there for another month.
I just thank Heyzeus that the shitty lanes that weren't plowed properly into DC are melted! Now, driving in isn't 2 hours anymore and I'm not forced with the Metro being my only option to work on shitty days.

This pile is outside the West Falls Church metro garage. It's in an area that doesn't get direct sun. It'll take some warm rain to put a dent into this mound.

As long as those niggers are in Fairfax, the snow will be here. Niggers love snow because the longer it is here, the blacker it gets. In my honest opinion, we should bring back slavery for a few months so the niggers can get all of the snow out of here. It would be nice to see a coon working for a change instead of laying around all day and night drinking 40s and smoking Kools.
There is still a lot of snow at Mason in a wooded area alongside Patriot Circle near the Sandy Creek Parking Deck. That's going to stick around at least for the next few days.
Here's the new question: when will the respective HOA's get around to cutting up all of the fallen trees? I've got one that takes up 60% of my back yard, which fell from a "common area" and is tagged to be cut up. And for what it's worth I was told NOT to cut it up. Otherwise I'd be sawing that bitch up.

I would, but the problem is that it's a 40-50' pine tree. The reason I was told not to cut it up was that it's too big to place out on the street for pick up. The tree company would bring equipment (chippers/splitters) to dispose of it and the 3 in my neighbors's yards (and all of the other trees in the 'hood). I'm afraid if I cut it up, I'll be responsible for the disposal - fuck that. I'm not making 50 trips to the dump with my truck.
If it was oak or something other than pine, I'd cut it for firewood. Pine sucks for firewood - too much smoke.

Burning pine in your fireplace or wood stove can also burn your house down. Pine smoke coats the inside of your chimney with creosote. And when that shit ignites you're talking a major chimney fire. Chimney fires can catch the house on fire.
Has anybody been out to Total Wine in Greenbriar lately? They had a fucking island of snow last week that didn't look like it was going anywhere anytime soon.
There are still some big piles on the north side of the parking garage at West Falls Church metro that look like they'll make it to April. I'll try to snap a pic later today.
The big pile I posted earlier would have stayed long too, but the day after I posted it, they brought in a bulldozer and hauled the snow away.
This one is still going strong at WFC metro. It's on the north side of the garage and only gets direct sun in the late afternoon. It'll be here in April unless someone fucks with it.

It used to be piled up to the third or fourth level of the parking garage. I think it'll be there for another couple of weeks, at least.
Now it's gonna drive me nuts all day, I can't think of the name movie where the villain is pacing in front of the hero at his feet that he's just beaten the hell out of, and he says, "You just won't...die".
That's what I think of when I see that fucking snow pile, but I can't for the life of me remember the movie or who's in it.
Yes, I Googled the quote. Anyone remember the movie?
Damn, I can't believe that any is left. However, I guess it's to be expected, given that they had piles 40' high + at some locations, and people made them into giant snow parks.
