Illegal to pick up trash, take away fallen branches, keep invasive plants under control?!?!

Many of the parks in this county are badly neglected. There is trash everywhere, fallen trees, and lots of highly invasive non-native plant species that have displaced the native plants.

I’ve voiced my concerns to the county. I’ve gotten no response from them, no progress is being made. The officials around here don’t seem to do shit and aren’t doing their damn job!!! Contractors who do the landscaping do the bare minimum.

I collect all the trash, fallen branches and twigs, and trim back some of the invasive non-native plant species in order to keep many of these smaller local parks at least somewhat presentable.

This one time got confronted by some old geezer who saw me doing this. Got real snippy with me and told me I was in BIG BIG trouble, if the cops were to show up, I would be arrested and taken away immediately. Told the old man I’m trying to clean up the local parks here that the county don’t seem to give a shit about. Old man told me it doesn’t matter, I can’t touch anything at the park, I can make up whatever I want, cops don’t care, I’ll be arrested.
I spend a few more minutes finishing up what I started, then left. Old Geezer continued to stare at me.

Keep in mind I’m not doing this at well regulated/well maintained parks like Burke Lake Park. I’m cleaning up the small local residential parks that the county don’t give a shit about and residents around here seem to have the same attitude.

I’ve seen:

1.Homeless folks set up tents

2.Folks dumping personal items into public park dumpsters (even though you got stickers saying its illegal)

3.High School kids staying at parks late at night so they can smoke weed, consume alcohol, fool around

4.People litter, not pick up after their dogs, and dump their personal yard waste at these parks

5.People try to hunt for treasure by bringing their metal detectors

6.Kids swimming in the streams to catch minnows, frogs, toads, etc and take them home

7.People forage/collect berries or leaves

With so many of these other violations happening and going unpunished, officials not doing their job and neglecting these parks.

The county really going to hassle someone acting on good intentions and trying to help sustain, protect and clean up these parks???

Don't let one crazy old man worry you. If he had called the police, they would have come, listened to him rant for a few minutes to humor him, thanked you, and left.

gerrymanderer2 (OP) posts several lies on ffu daily - many think he's a fx co gov worker who is getting paid to do it for false DNC democrat "advertising". he also floods ffu with useless posts to bump down major news, posts fecal matter, mutilated bodies, child porn, foreign drug ads, tells people to kill themselves, anti-religious rants, satanic ritual rants, insists people need forced governmet "psychiatry, and anything possible to demoralize people on ffu. (perhaps a chinese prisoner or isis member - but denfinitely knowlegable of fx co gov). the website operator has told him "not to post or return".

fucking foreigners are an invasive species in our "park system", turning it from a hardly funded thing to one that ENDLESSLY SPENDS AND HIRES ILLEGAL ALIENS

park workers troll the area regularly in equipment

g2 saying he's done free cleaning in the park - that should be arrestable public lying

Who cares? No one goes to the park these days. Everyone is glued to their phones these days.

Contact SHF-PIO@fairfaxcounty.gov or sheriff@fairfaxcounty.gov , Sheriff's department, to see if a group of their supervised inmates will do the work. Website is https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/sheriff/ and phone 703-246-3227. No promises, but they did help clear a major roadway trail years ago when contacted them.

The County park service will usually cooperate with individuals and organizations which are willing to help out with responsible maintenance of the county parks. I have participated in several clean ups. What the park system does limit is rogue clean up efforts which may not be consistent with the park system's plans for the parks.

I have simply removed a large branch from and on a near my neighborhood county park trail so a bicyclist does not run over and wreck. I am suspect of picking up some trash, such as a partially filled water bottle with cap on, as some terrorist could have planted it. Invasive plants - personally don't go there.

Any serious issues, like a drainage problem with water covering many sections of the same trail, emailed parkmail@fairfaxcounty.gov . I even attached digital pictures of the problem (picture worth 1000 words) which helped them to see how serious problem was and more quickly address the problem which they did.

It is obvious you are starting these threads and then responding to your own posts. Stop offering up the services of the Fairfax County Sheriffs office or the inmates. That is not in their purview. The Sheriffs office does not receive any funding for the type of activities you want to sign them up for, therefore they are not going to do it. Tax dollars are collected and allocated for park maintenance. If it is not being done, complain to your Board of Supervisors. It would set a bad precedent if the Sheriffs office stepped in and started doing work that another county entity is paid to do. This disrupts funding streams and accounting. If the Fairfax County Department of Parks and Recreation needs more funding, they need to go through the process of getting it.

Not same person as original poster. Inmate labor is free, so where is the funding issue? The sherriff's deputy, if time on his or her hands, if already getting paid. If wasn't clear on post, made no promises this would happen for the parks. Definitely not for recurring routine maintenance.

From contacts with county departments and supervisors, have had varying results over the the last 10 years. Everyone's mileage varies on that, depending on the issue and how you approach it.

* Fire department 911, excellent.
* Police department, mixed results on suspicious activity calls.
* Parks department, good.
* Fairfax County Department of Transportation, mixed results on commuter bus transportation issues.
* Supevisors Frey (before he retired) and Hudgins - very good.
* Supevisors Bulova and Herrity - mixed results.
* School Board - poor, gone too far to the liberal left.

Lower levels in county government are often more responsive if you include in the email to them CCing the county supevisor(s) they report to.

Leadership in county government are often more responsive if can find something in their own life biography relating to your issue.

As county citizens, we pay good money for the county to provide services to us. As with any business dealing, want simple, reliable, done, with a minimum of time and effort, and not a lot of red tape. If the county cannot do this, citizens will often find other legit ways to deal with their critical issues. Some in county government though are true servants, as once met former supervisor Michael Frey at a charity event, and learned he fought for citizens in western Fairfax County getting better commuter bus service than Metrobus provided fighting their unions.

OP should go to the Fairfax government over the area that has the parks in need of cleanup and offer to clean them all up in return for a part time employment contract. If Fairfax can afford the Taj Mahal and the diamond topped half acre conference table gracing their eloquent meeting chamber, they can afford to cut a few $ off the reserve tax fund they use to give free benefits, housing and food to their large hordes of on-the-dole illegal voters.

county wants to give fcps 2 Billion dollars of your tax money so every one of the 188,000 students can have a lsptop. this is more important than adequately funding parks, library, mental health, etc. what happens to those devices after 5 years? replace? landfill? hiring more staff to manage the mess? for a highly regarded system, fcps admn is full of stupid people

I spent $20 on gravel for my local park, same spot always flooded and muddy. The county won't do anything.
