Where have all the snow shovels gone?
Posted by: SteamingDogPoo ()

I love how this has not nearly been addressed as much as it should, but why the f@cK is every store in Fairfax and nearby areas completely out of stock as if they did not think there would be a mad rush of people to buy snow shovels? I had 2 new $15 shovels that were assembled by a team of mongoloids that are now broken, one handle broke off completely after it got wet and the other actual shovel came off the shaft at the seams, learn to weld you fuck heads; great craftsmanship, go to hell!

Besides the obvious, Home Depot/Sears/Lowes/Kmart....is there any where else that would have one in stock today? I'll trade you a nice red charcoal grill for it, I'm located near Fair Oaks mall. Seriously though, I'm sick of stealing shovels from the workers outside Whole Foods, I want my own snow shovel dammit.

Thanks.

This is the reason why I purchased several snow shovels pre-storm so I can sell them to people in the time of need. The going price is $107... if you have a better offer I will be glad to discuss this with the other bidders. BTW i offer free delivery.

Tell me about it. Had to order a replacement snow shovel off the friggin Internet! All the stores around here are sold out. The one guy bragging about how quickly he sold out their stock (meanwhile telling me he has none) just about got knocked out.

Home Depot near 29 and Fair Oaks Mall has about 60 shovels left. Best be going before they're gone. I am posting this as a sort of survival of the fittest type deal.

good call... I did get lazy after the first storm and didn't even bother looking but people are actually paying $107 for a shovel right now?? Pretty nuts, I'd go $50 max but it better be a good shovel, for now i'll just have to borrow the neighbor's and be that dick.

I charge my neighbors rent when they ask to use my shovel... I say, "You really don't want to pay me that much to use my shovel?... Well, how badly do you need to get to work?" Haha

I buy the shovels that are held together with one screw holding the scoop on. I know it sounds cheap, but the screw becomes the stress point. When the screw breaks, you turn the scoop and put a new screw in. My previous shovels have been like this and they last several seasons. If you have one that is welded or molded into one piece, once it breaks you are fucked.

What you do is grab cover your car tonight with tarp or anything to avoid shoveling later and just pulling the cover off your car with the snow on top, dragging it to a unload point and letting loose.. You might think this is hard work, but with the amount of snow we might be getting it would be better to waste 30 minutes on that itself rather than shoveling your snow off your car with brushes and shovels potentially damaging the paint and chipping your windshields... (For those of you that actually use a SHOVEL to get snow off your car).

People who don't have shovels, just take SteamingDogPoo's advice! Go to your local super market and go jack some shovels... If your lucky, you might find a couple stuck in the snow around the back or the sides...

Now if you get caught... Shame on you.

my $6 plastic shovel is holding STRONG!!
went to home depot for a metal one last night to get this 3 inches of ice up but they were all out, good thing though cuz those metal snow shovels arnt strong enough for that ice. you need Dirt shovels and makea stress point thatll crack the ice so you can easily remove.

I have a good shovel but stopped loaning it to neighbors once there was a lot of ice in the snowpack... using a regular snowshovel to try to break up ice breaks my shovel.

Did all these shovel-less motherfuckers just move here from the Deep South?

I've had the same TruTemper Timberland shovel for at least 15 years now. I've replaced the metal scraper strip on the blade a few times, but that's it...the fucking thing will last forever.

oops. busted.

Betcha didn't know Virginia has a post-disaster anti-gouging law. I couldn't make this up if I tried.

As far as anti-gouging, I wish there was some enforcement of hotels. The room rates always double or triple when there is long term power outages.

Gee, I wonder why? You don't suppose it's because of, oh, I don't know, demand increasing while supply staying the same, maybe? Just a thought.

I'm talking about price gouging. When a hotel usually charges less than $80 for a single bed, and then start charging over $200 when the surrounding area has a power outage, that's price gouging.

That law applies to suppliers (retailers). It doesn't apply to someone who bought up a bunch of shovels before the storm and is reselling them to highest-bidding neighbors.

There's no such thing as price gouging. That's just a fake crime made up by people who are pissed off when they can't get something as cheap as they'd like.

LOL at that King of the Hill Tru Temper Timberland shovel quote...I have had that very shovel for 12 years now. Just as good as the day I bought it.

Check the smaller local Hardware stores. They tend to be hard hit in this economy, and will be doing everything they can to get shovels and ice melter.

But to all of you that are upset at the stores for being sold out, remember - those stores have to find suppliers who still have shovels. And those shovels have to be delivered on trucks that are stuck on the same roads that you are.

The guy wasn't bragging. He was probably amazed at how fast they were selling. I know one store nearby that sold over 200 shovels in 45 minutes. He got 200 more a couple of days later, and they were gone in an hour or so. What you interpreted as "bragging" was probably him lamenting the fact that he didn't have more shovels to sell.

The local news said Stalcup's in Vienna was getting a big shipment of shovels tomorrow. (400? maybe).

That's a great store. You know you're in a real hardware store when the only guy working is in his seventies, and there is a big old dog sleeping in one of the aisles.

Go get your shovels and support a local business.

I've had my Timberland for about 14 years. I wish True Temper still made them, I'd love to have a backup.

It was actually "400 shovels AND sleds"...don't know the exact proportions, but good sledding will be here long after the need for a shovel. Although, if you haven't had a shovel over the last 5 days, I pity you big time!

Yeah, they replaced it with the "Arctic Blast" which looks like a piece of shit in photos.

The good news is my Timberland is going to get a much deserved break. My new Ariens snowblower arrived today! 13.5 horsepower, electric start, halogen headlight, it even has fucking heated hand grips! I bought it online because I couldn't find one araound here. The truck had at least a dozen other snow throwers on board, so I ain't the only one that finally broke down and bought one.

Now that I spent 2 grand, it will never snow again. I better fire that baby up before this shit melts!

Wegman's in Fairfax has wood/plastic shovels for about $10..perhpas good to clean steps in a town home.

Also 25# bags of salt for about $4.

They also have some cool Zamboni looking parking lot cleaning vehicles out there.

Salt and that ice-melt shit will fuck up your concrete and kill nearby grass/shrubs.

Don't use it unless you're just renting the fucking place. Use sand.

Rock salt will destroy your concrete, true. But the calcium/potassium or magnesium chloride products, used properly, will not damage concrete or asphalt. (Concrete that's less than a year old excluded.)

As far as grass and shrubs, use a urea-based melt product, or a high-nitrogen fertilizer. Runoff from the chloride-based products may damage your vegetation, depending on concentration.

Compared to most of what's out there, the Arctic Blast is not bad. But it's definitely no Timberland.

Enjoy your snowblower. I'm kind of wishing I'd bought one!
