No wonder you scored horribly on your VCLA. I guess and I hope you are not an English teacher. It's ok, schools always need substitutes to play movies for the class when the teacher is absent. By left a word, do you mean left out a letter?

I've always wanted to grade a teacher...

1) It is I scored an unofficial as opposed to I scored a unofficial
2) It is Has anyone here ever taken the VCLA? as opposed to has anyone here every took the VCLA
3) It is I just took it not too long ago as opposed to I just took it not to long ago

You are a jerk!!! And you are the one that sound foolish and immature. You act as if you know everything that there is to know in the world. I am sure you do not know one percent of all that could be known; and if someone asked you anyone of the millions of things you do not know; how would you feel if that made you feel as stupid as you are trying to make this person feel. You do not know the answer anyway and you are trying to hide your own ignorance; by highlighting someone’s' failure to spell a few words correctly!!! Get a life and save what little brains you do have to learn so compassion. You are the one whom I hope is not teaching in the schools system. It’s because of poorly skilled, hateful, discouraging, academically prejudiced teachers like yourself; children dropout of school; and others never believe they can succeed in life; because your type took pleasure in chocking the life out of their every attempt. Instead of discouraging others use the gifts God give you to develop others God given potential.
To answer the question here is a formula from what someone actually scored
Raw score 85
Official score 278
This would mean… if you divided 278 by 85 you get 3.270588235294118 if you multiply this number by 85 percent raw score you get the official score of 278 and you only need 235 to pass. Rounding this number off to 3 would only give you 255 not the official score reported; but it comes out perfectly if you use the whole number to the reported official score
so if this is factual then if you take the raw score in question; which is 74 and multiply it by 3.270588235294118 you get 242.0345294117647 which rounds off to 242 as your official score which means she indeed did pass with flying colors because you only need 235 as an official score to pass one part and a composite score of 470 on both parts to pass the whole thing. So if you sore under 235 on one part and yet you score well over that on the other part and the sores add up to the magic number 470 then guess what you pass the whole thing.

I thought they combined scores and you had to have a 470, BUT each subtest has to be at least a 235 for reading and writing in order to pass.

The website states: when subtest are combined it must equal 470, BUT each subtest should be at least a 235 for reading and writing in order to pass. If your composite score adds up to 470 it is okay if both subtest do not add up to 235, but some schools will not except that.

Damn all of you for making fun of my inability to form a cogent and correct sentence in this forum! yes, I want to be a teacher, but I don't understand why I should be held to some STANDARD in order to teach young, impressionable people. After all, people communicate well enough these days on the Internet using all sorts of hip and trendy abbreviations. Why should there be anything more formal than that in private business, or government, or diplomatic communiques with foreign countries. It doesn't matter for me when I am chatting on line and I can't fathom wht it might have relevance in any other context. Just leave me alone and let me be me. That's the most important thing about being a teacher...individuality, not conformity. Rules are for squares and any aptitude test that tries to keep me from reaching my ill-conceived goal is just plain bad because it shows that I don't have what it takes. Don't you realize that I want to take the easy path while getting the same credit as other people. It's not fair.

The test was a bitch. I missed 11 points somewhere and scored 589. 291/298.

Someone unable to get 470 should most certainly NOT be teaching English, or any subject where the written word is graded. This would include everything except PE. Oops - PE includes Health which may involve essays or short written answers, so PE is out. Maybe Math. But I think someone passing the Math Praxis will probably do ok on the VCLA.

It comes down to supply and demand. This area (Loudoun, Fairfax, etc.) can be selective because there are more teachers than jobs (in most subjects.) If you struggle with the VCLA you should take that as a sign to move to Mississippi or Arkansas.

I received a raw score of 74% on the reading and a 62% on the writing and knew these were fairly low scores. However, I think I did well on the writing

do you think I have a chance of passing? Or know anyone that had similar scores as me that still made the cut off?

The VCLA is basic comprehension of understanding the english language. If you can not read passages and interpret alternate meanings of certain words or interpret the meaning of certain paragraphs, then a life in educational teaching is not for you not matter what the subject is. If you are not able to summarize a five paragraph passage into 150-200 words or theorize your own opinion about a certain subject and write 300-600 cohesive words about it, then educational teaching is not for you. With the scores you have just posted, I truly weep for the future as this and the Praxis I, are items that are used on the SAT/ACT. Your scores would basically equate to a score of 800 (not including the math portion). I am positive you will not make the cutoff and if you somehow do, then I would recommend an english literature course at NOVA to refresh you and I am dead serious about that comment. God help you on the Praxis II as that is the real deal of tests and I would seriously take a course and order materials online regarding the subject you intend to teach.

Before anyone judges me I am looking to teach French, not English. I understand I need English to communicate but I find the VCLA very subjective. I am a 4.0 grad student for a Master in Education. I write and read a lot for my classes. but My scores for the VCLA still seem low. I got a 80% for reading and 77% for writing (without the written expression) if anyone passed with similar scores please let me know. I am losing my mind waiting for the final results. You should be fine, but maybe borderline just above the mark. Your scores should probably relate to 250-260 on the reading and 220-240 (of course I haven't factored in the writing portion of the test, which is the hardest). I am betting that based on your response you posted above that is filled with grammatical errors, that you might not pass the writing portion and will have to retake the writing portion on a subtest. They will send you an email stating when your scores will be posted and they will email you a detailed copy of your results as well. Better pray on the writing section, but relax on the reading.

hmmm...thank you for your response. However, I'd like to stress the fact that this is supposed to be a forum where we are not being judged for every little thing. In a test where I am assessed and evaluated for my writing I can assure you I pay closer attention to those" grammatical errors" you mentioned. This is supposed to be a helpful conversation and yet I see a lot of negativity. Oh well!! I will show up one more time to share my results. This might help someone else in the future.

Hey, no one judged you. You asked and I told you and based on the fact that you got a pretty borderline grade on the writing and your basic post on here was "iffy" in some spots, so I decided to tell you honestly as you wished. Don't want to hear the truth then don't ask the question. Good luck to you on your test grade, but be prepared to see results close to my general assessment and if you are wondering why you don't pass, I would suggest looking deep at your general writing skills in everyday life. Practicing correct grammatical skills, no matter where you are, will help in times like these. Not negative, just truthful. Next time look at the 5-6 helpful facts I gave you and not focus on the one correction remark. Remember that comment when you are a teacher and a student comes to you with a similar problem. Bon apres-midi.

geez. The folks responding to this thread are just plain mean spirited. A few people are having some stress having taken a very important test and asked a very simple question. Rather than answer the question a number of people chose to criticize and, through their bravado and insults avoided ever answering the question. If these individuals think that their insecurity went undetected they are wrong.

The rules are as follows: In virginia a total score of 470 on reading is writing is needed to "pass" the VCLA. There is no minimum score on either test, but nominally speaking, each test could be considered individually and, as such, a nominal score of 235 out of 300 is needed on each individual test to pass. However, this is potentially deceiving since the total score is all that matters. Said differently for those who may doubt the truth: You could score very well on the reading and do miserablly on the writing....but if your total score is greater than 470....you pass!

Now, as to how these scores are compiled: Each test starts with a baseline of 100. In otherwords, you score 100 for just showing up and leaving your test blank. Your score is then built up as a function of correct answers. There is no penalty for guessing...so unlike the SAT you should always fill in a response for each and every question. Then, to compute your score take the number of correct answers and normalize it against a 0-200 range and add this value to 100. As a example: If you scored 25 correct out of 40 questions on the reading section: { (25/40)*200 } + 100 yeilds a score of 225.

For the writing section I am currently not positive (but am checking on behafl of my son) whereby the 3 areas of writing account for a total of 30% of the writing sections grade. The remaining 70% is attributed to the 40 or 41 multiple choice questions. The formula, then, is essentially the same as for the reading section. However, the score from the composition has to be included prior to normalizing against a 200 point scale, afterwhich it is, again, added to 100. Since there are 3 writing sections I recall each accounting for 10% each. However, I am not positive of this.

I hope that this helps. I am one of those Math guys who also scored pretty high on the VCLA. I also happen to have a daughter attending school at the University of Arkansas studying architecture. She is incrediblly bright and works extremely long hours as do many other students in her program. Please be careful about being so publically insensative since you never know when you might meet somebody smarter than yourself. :):)

Enjoy.

r

mark

ASIDE: My son just scored an unofficial 82 percent on the reading. This will likely equate to a score of 271 since they curve the scores as you get closer and closer to a perfect score. I didn't mention this in my para above since it doesn't really come into play unless/untill you score very high. My son will have some trouble with the writing section....which is good since his reading score should save the day. He plans on teaching history....and "yes", he will have a tough time grading compositions. However, he is a history "whiz kid" and will make up for his shortcomings.....somehow. He always has....and he will never stoop to criticizin and belittling others who are struggling.

Have a nice 2013.

I just wanted to follow up on how VCLA writing tests are graded. The multiple choice, includin the 3 questions that deal with rewriting a sentence that has two errors....are collectively worth 50% of the grade. The Summary Response is worth 20% and is graded on a 1-4 scale. No partial scores (e.g. only integer grades). In other words, the grader assigns a grade of 1,2,3 or 4 and is not able to assign a grade of 2.2 or 3.7. This grades is then transformed to account for 20% of the total score. The same process is used for the final composition, except that it accounts for 30% of the total score. Once the total score is known it is normalized against a 200 point scale and then added to 100.

I hope that this is clear.

You know what? I should be studying/preparing right now, but I just had to stop and remark on this post.

It is NOT right for you to act completely pious and self-involved, as you are using a forum that is supposed to be helpful to test-takers. By using it as a forum to elevate your personal opinion of yourself, you're taking the focus away from useful information and making yourself look like a prize a$$.

By the way, your sentence structure is atrocious, and, considering the copious run-ons, adding a superfluous "so", and bad French grammar, I don't doubt you learned all of these tragic lessons you call "suggestions" at the hands of your own poor students- assuming you made it that far.

To the folks looking for genuine information on the VCLA:

The test is fairly easy, so you probably don't need to worry. If you are worried, however, try contacting the VCLA and not the landfill of lowlife people in (most) internet forums.

To the folks correcting people's grammar for some self-fulfilling purpose:

You are attacking people on the internet. What this means is you probably do not have the gumption to do so in real life. Digitally, however, you've found a way to make yourself feel like less of an empty vessel of a human being. Go outside, children. The Vitamin D will soak into your skin for the first time in nearly a decade and I promise you it will feel liberating. That is, of course, if you use sunscreen. Chances are you probably don't have any, so you should go to the store first. That is assuming you can overcome your terrible case of agoraphobia. If you can't, remain calm and continue to "bully" strangers on the internet. That's what real men do. Hide behind your keyboard and prop up your laptop screen with your Cro-Magnon forehead.

Question about VCLA Test
Posted by: Allie ()
Date: July 27, 2013 04:27PM

Hi there Mark,
I just wanted to see if you could help me figure this out. I graduated from VCU and am now attending George Mason for my Masters Degree in Education. I am more of an English major. Math is just not my forte. I am hoping you can help me figure out the formula for discovering how to use your raw scores to calculate if I passed in the Reading and Writing Subtests of the VCLA. I was extremely nervous this morning taking the exam. My test anxiety may have gotten the best of me. My scores were 62% in Reading subtest and 68% on the Writing Subtest. I think I am cutting it close. I'd like to think I have a chance at passing and am right on the "brink." That doesn't factor in the writing portion of the 2 essays I had to write, correct? Please let me know. I am really stressing out about this!

I just took my VCLA test a few days ago and have been searching for the answer to this question. Obviously we receive a percentage on the reading and writing right away. I received a 74% on the writing. Does that include the multiple choice, sentence corrections, and essays? Is the 74% just the multiple choice answers from the writing, while the rest of the writing portion will be calculated and added into the score later?

I just took the writing portion. My raw score was 57%. I need to get 230 points to have my total 470 points. How is the writing portion calculated. I made a 239 on the reading. Thanks.

I think what most people are searching for is the end result. What did your unofficial raw score end up computing to for your official final score? Meaning, if you got a 74 raw score in reading, then that computes to exactly a 235, so if you got an 88 raw score on reading what was your final score after you got your results? People that post information that is helpful is much appreciated.

got 82% raw score on reading and my official score was a 257. PASSED!! I got a 74% raw for multiple choice on writing then with comps and summary and it equaled a 227 official score not passing , but because I made it up in reading, total test = passed! You need a total of 470 and I got a 484. Hope information is helpful for those who are awaiting their scores! Good Luck to all!

I took the reading test last week and my raw score was 88%, which translated to a 271 out of 300 points. I took the writing test yesterday and received a 74% and will post the final score next week. Regarding preparation, the practice tests on the website were exactly what was presented on the computer test.

Update: Passed both writing and reading tests. Writing was a 238 (74% on Multiple choice and 3's on the summary and composition) reading 271 (88% on multiple choice) total 509. Good luck to everyone else as Va's raised their standards, where a 78% is required on each test or 78% total.

After reading this thread and just taking the VCLA myself I have decided that the people responding to this teacher's post are the most inconsiderate and cold people I have ever come into contact with in a post. There are 7 different types of intelligences. Just because you cannot pass a test does not prove the validity of your intelligence. Some of the most amazing teachers are those who exercise creativity and "thinking out of the box". So all of you who think a damn test defines your child's future I sincerely feel sorry for you and your very narrow minds!

They don’t think that. They’re not thinking about anything other than being an ass. Don’t sweat it.

Your post says it all:

HAs anyone here ever took the VCLA? I just took it not to long ago and did HORRIBLE!
I scored a unofficial Raw score of 74 for reading and 72 for writing. Im scared to death, Is this good enough for passing?

Corrected:

Has anyone ever taken the VCLA? I just took it and did horribly. My unofficial raw score was 74 for reading and 72 for writing. I'm scared to death. Will my score be high enough to pass?

If your score is not good enough to pass, it is a blessing for the students. Go back to school and learn the grammar and mechanics of the English language.

Many aspiring teachers — especially those who switch careers to pursue education — feel nervous or overwhelmed when faced with the VCLA and Praxis exams.

But the Virginia Department of Education doesn't require Praxis 1.

I never took the Praxis 1

I took the required Praxis 2 in my subject area Biology & the VCLA test.

I completed my master's online and received a pay increase. I have learned all of this is a business for $$$

Good Luck to those taking these tests

It's one of the toughest, most perplexing tests I've taken. Unofficial scores (before writing prompts have been scored) were high 90's on the reading and mid-80's on the writing. Spent 3.5 hours deliberating over artfully-penned multiple-choice questions that seemed to have more than one correct answer... Instructs you to pick the 'best' answer so ultimately you must interpret inferred nuances of the composition.

I took the VCLA Reading Subtest last week and my percentage was fairly high. Since English is my second language, I spent a couple of weeks preparing for the test. I just wanted to share that SAT practice tests on the following website are very helpful:

http://www.cracksat.net/sat/passage-based-reading/

Though these tests do not ask exactly the same type of questions that VCLA test does, but just going through the passages and then making an effort to locate the information and coming up with the correct response prepares you quite well for VCLA.

Good luck to all!
