Actually, for time or weather all you had to do is dial the correct first 3 numbers then any random 4 after that

We're probably no better off under Verizon but I remember this about any Bell System company then and it was true.

I remember when we were able to have multiple ring tones to tell you who the incoming call was for.

Ma Bell invented long distance calls in usa and laid FIBER OPTIC cable across america - made many of the best electronic advancements still in use (and still being stolen).

FYI-the weather was ANY FOUR NUMBERS AFTER “936-“

I think the recorded Time # was 844-2525. Weather was WE6+any 4 although before it went silent or disconnected I think the phone company standardized the last 4 digits.

As a former front desk receptionist, if I wanted a restroom break or a few minutes without ringing phone lines, I’d call the weather number, put it on hold, then Time, place on hold. I think I had four phone lines. The recordings went on for several minutes.

“Good morning! At the tone...the time will be...eleven.forty-six! and ten seconds...boooop. At the tone the time will be eleven forty six and twenty seconds....booooop

The female recorded voice would say Good Morning/Good Afternoon/Good Evening. Just for fun as kids we’d stay up til midnight and call the time number once at 1159/Good evening then stay on the line to hear her say Good morning/1200

So if you wondered why you got a busy signal at a very busy title company in the early 90s, I apologize.

Does anyone remember the number one could call that put you together with others that called that number?
Half a dozen or so callers would be all patched together.
Around 1970 -75 in Fairfax , Vienna area.

There used to be a number you could call to see if your phone line was tapped.
It had a rising pitch noise & if it clicked or interrupted the noise, you knew your line was tapped.
You used to be able to call 811 & see what the call back number of the phone you were using was. Now it's used for Ms. Utility.

Lucky charms gave a whistle in their cereal box that was the same sound as a quarter being dropped in a pay phone.
You could just use the whistle to get free phone calls.

The whistle was in captain crunch cereal.
It generated a 2600 cycles per second tone that fooled the switching system into believing that the user had hung up.
The user would then be able to dial any number without generating billing .
So called blue boxes generated touch tone mixed frequencies for such calls .
