First of all, the Charlottesville PD and the State police did not do their jobs because they were told to stand down in protecting the rights of the marchers.
What is wrong with trying to preserve military statues depicting our history?

No matter what your views of southern society at the time, it was NORMAL back then, and they fought to protect that life.
Then through hundreds of thousands of young men dying on the battlefields, we corrected that.
The organized counter protesters were organized by democrat leftist groups and showed up to start a confrontation.

The police should have kept the groups separated and they did not.

So that makes it ok to drive your car into a group of people who have a different opinion than yours. Of course we should have statues for our heroes who tried to over throw the U.S. government. We should name schools and highways after them, much like Heinrich Himmler Middle School and Mussolini Scenic Highway.

Oh, OK, So the first amendment should be struck from the Constitution?

...and by the way if Germany won WW2 they would have statues in Berlin of them and all the others including Adolf Hitler...instead of it being against the law to even think anything NAZI in Germany today!

So what's better Wally Boy? To acknowledge our mistakes and yet still honor the heroism and dedication to their beliefs or erase all of our history, tear down all the bronze statues and never speak of it again?

Germany didn't win WW II. The South didn't win the Civil War. I don't think we should honor "hero" Nazis or Confederate Rebels because they were dedicated to their beliefs that white people were superior over other races.

History should not be erased and never spoken of again. But we certainly should not celebrate their lives and "heroics."

Let's count the number of logical fallacies in the above statement.

Robert E. Lee was no hero. At the onset of the war, he gathered military strategists to come up with a plan. Their collective conclusion was to give up Virginia, and fight to a stalemate in the southern states. They based their recommendations on Russia's stategy with Napoleon, and the lack of real resources the Confederacy had at the time. If the Confederates fought to keep Virginia, they will lose the war. Geographicly, they concluded, Virginia was a lost cause.

What did Lee do? He fought to keep Virginia, and lost the war. So, only dumb people worship the worst military strategists in US history. Lee marched well over 200,000 men (and boys as young as ten years old) to their deaths for a geographic plot of land they were in no position to adequately defend. If you want to idolize this pigheaded buffoon, go ahead. But, do not deny real history by labeling him a hero, and not the pigheaded, racist, opportunist, traitor he really was.
