It amazes me that we have anyone willing to coach at all with the way coaches get treated. From reading through this forum it sounds like there are only 2-3 coaches that are good. 2-3 that are ok, and the rest should be fired. Most of these guys make nothing and spend countless hours with our kids. Give them a break and thank them for what they do.

Here’s an interesting fact, there is no scientific research actually linking football to brain damage. There are a couple of poorly researched articles that claim a link to CTE, but since the author of the study only examines former football players who showed signs of personality disorders, they had noting to compare it to, so its unknown how common CTE is in the general population.

There is either a Mayo or Johns Hopkins study looking at the rate of mental illness, depression, and suicide in former HS football players, and it showed men who played HS football the same rate of mental illness as the general population, and actually have a lower suicide rate, and longer life expectancy.

So keep telling yourself whatever you need to feel better.

Expect a big announcement by the middle of next week. Will be quite a surprise, and probably a little controversial.

They are trying to hire someone who’s not a teacher. The delay in announcing the hire is to get Gatehouse to either approve a non-teacher hire or find the guy a non-certified job at the school. Don’t know the name, but those discussions are going on at Gatehouse.

CVHS DSA knee only way to knock WF off is to have WF staff. The first call was made to Shields and ended with Shields. Everyone else submitted their apps in vain. They have 2 other obligatory interviews but their minds were set, actually before Haddock stepped down. The boosters had Shields in mind

The only reason WF won was Shields. Hell, if Simmons had enough sense to start his son last year we'd have 4 straight! Dude was average at Soco, was average at WF, and will be ..The 3 titles were with 3 DCs all different running Kyle system. We took him off OC when he choked. He isn't built for the top role, but he wants his son to play.

I’m relocating my family to Fairfax County this summer and we’re looking at houses in the West Springfield high school zone. I want to get my son involved with the football program but when I search this forum, I don’t see much positive commentary. He’ll be a sophomore this fall. The other school in the area is south county high school? Which program would you want your kid to be in and why?

Looks like we should be considering Centreville high school but that seems to be on the other side of the county?

Definitely go the South County route. Much better program than West Springfield.

Personal opinion only. I’d move to wherever is most convenient for you considering your job and commute. Unless you have some compelling reason to pick a particular high school football program your kid can have fun and a good football experience at West Springfield. West Springfield has kids playing college football right now. Admittedly not as many as the top end schools.

I think everyone agrees Westfield has the overall best coaching staff in Fairfax County but consider that West Springfield’s head coach was an assistant at Westfield during the time they won a state championship. Centreville also has a top-notch program. Strangely enough South County’s head coach was the head coach at Centreville for three years. And they were awful when he was there. But he’s done a nice job at South County.

Things can change fast – you think you are getting into one situation and two years later it can have completely changed. And if your kid’s not that good he might not get on the field at the best schools.

Stay away from Lake Braddock, Robinson, and Woodson. Too much involvement from the youth programs in the area. Since your kid didn’t come up through them, he will have no chance of playing.

SoCo and Hayfield will play the best players, but they will also have transferring in all of the time.

Don’t be afraid to look inside the beltway, either. If he goes to Falls Church he’ll win his district and Jusrice is an improving program. Seems to have a pretty good coach. Both schools are much better than the ratings you get online. They just have a lot of foreigners. Marshall will make the playoffs and lose in the first round every year, but its a great school.

Ummm, no. Shields was a decent coach, but no where near the only reason WF won over the past decade. Jack doesn't play at Noah's level. He might grow into it, but we all saw what happened this year in the playoffs when Noah got hurt and Jack came in (2 fumbles and got pulled after a couple of series).

I like Jon and he's coached my kids in FB, BB and LAX through the years. I wish him well and hope he's a great coach for Centreville (except when they play WF).

That is the point! There were good head coaches available and they took an assistant of dubious distinction. I was on the panel. There was a HC with 150 wins. There was another from a smaller school with multiple titles. It was a joke. Not saying Shields won't be decent, but rather that the puck was in before the candidates artived.

It was

Aziz - Centreville isn’t hiring a foreigner/Arab to be their coach
Elridge - they aren’t hiring an idiot
Jim Poythress - too much baggage, but over 100 career wins

It came down to Shields and Aziz, but they wanted Shields all along!

Aziz is not going to get the premium jobs until he can prove he can win at the higher level. FC is not high level football, its a lower tier program. Name 1 quality win he has had since he took over? The other thing is he has proven he only wants a turn key job without having to put the work in...he was offered the Oakton job and didn't apply to the Woodson job. Oakton will take some work, but could be a very good program. The guy took the Woodson job and after 1 year of hard work, Woodson played for the region title. If Aziz wants a top tier job, he will need to take a chance on the Woodson's, Oakton's or any other of the mid tier programs that come open

If Poythress was really interested in that job that was the easy choice. Sure, Sheilds deserves a chance at a HC job, but there's always a slight risk with a first time HC. Kinda surprising. If true.

Aziz has won at a school no one else has ever won at. He does it with undersize kids who never play football prior to 9th grade. And he sends more of those kids to play college football than all but 4 other schools in the county. The school has minimal financial support, and he personally raises most of it.

So quit with the BS that he has to “earn” something else. He took a job considered to be a shit job and won. How about some of these assistant coaches go take jobs at places like FC, or Lee, or Edison, and lets see if they can win. Those are the ones who should have to prove something.

He took the Oakton job, but pulled out when he found out when a situation arouse that might have kept him from devoting his maximum attention to developing that team. He passed on applying for the Woodson job because 1) it was so late in the year he didn’t think it would be right to the players at FC to leave and 2) at least 3 area coaches told the Woodson DSA to hire Aziz, but the guy wouldn’t even return Aziz calls. So it was obvious he wouldn’t be considered.

My son plays for Aziz, and we think the world of him, and want him to stay at Falls Church for a while. But if he wants a job he feels is better, or closer to home, or whatever, i believe he deserves that opportunity. Especially before some assistant coach who was afraid of a challenge.

You are correct. Those panels are total BS. The candidates are already chosen so the panel is nothing more than for show.

No way is Poythress ever working in FCPS again. Makes no sense that he’s would even apply!

You Fc people just dont seem to get it. No one cares that Aziz has won at FC, it doesn't matter its a lower tier program!
Beating teams like Justice Edison Wakefield Marshall is meaningless.
Again name one quality win Aziz has had at FC?

Those assistant coaches at top tier programs have earned the respect of the DSAs and other coaches in the area, by winning at a top tier program, that's why they get those jobs and Aziz does not.

LB, Westfield SB, Woodson, SoCo, Madison, Robinson, Hayfield, Centreville, SL all send more to college then FC does, so dont even go there with that nonsense.

I am sure Aziz is a good coach, but he will not get the top tier jobs unless he proves he can win at a mid tier program first. Winning at FC will not get him those jobs, as that point has already been proven

Hate to break it to you, but FC outs more kids in college than Robinson, SL, Woodson, and Madison. At least according to the numbers that came out last year. Aziz puts kids in college. And he is one of the most respected coaches in the county, among HC’s. See what the earlier poster said about him being referred for the Woodson job. I know for a fact two current HC’s told Woodson he was the best candidate. You can keep this argument up all you want, but the reason he’s getting passed over is obvious.

Same could be said about Shields wanting a turn key job, or else why didn’t he throw his hat in the ring for the Oakton job? Cuz he didn’t want to do the work to rebuild that dumpster fire.

Maybe. But Shields knows all the Centreville kids and alot of their parents. WF and CV share SYA and Shields was an active coach in SYA (might still be for all I know). So there is familiarity between Jon and the players and boosters that made CV attractive to him and him attractive to CV.

Hiring assistants off of highly successful football teams is extremely common at all levels of football. Look at how many Head Coaches have come from Alabama in college and the Patriots in the NFL. Everyone wants to copy their success and CV is trying to do the same with Shields.
This is not about race like some are suggesting. Aziz is a successful head coach at a lower level program. No major BCS college school would hire a lower Division HC to run their program and Centreville isn’t going to take that chance either. Aziz will need to either take a middle level HC job and win or schedule some top tier opponents and be competitive if he ever wants a SoCo, WF, LB, CV, Tiily type of job. You’ve got to be able to show that you can compete against the schools above to get a chance at one of those jobs. You don’t have to necessarily win, but you can’t get destroyed.
The only outlier to this theory is Doc at LB. He got crushed by everyone good while at WTW and still landed the LB job. Doc had some success at SJ before and Braddock was dealing with multiple scandles and needed someone who wouldn’t screw up off the field. Doc met that description and because the job was posted late and the building was in turmoil some coaches didn’t come near it.

Everything you said up til “Tilly” & after made a ton of sense but by adding them in your argument makes you lose some credibility. They are not a top tier program, middle of the road on their best days.

Exactly, that's what I been saying, Aziz needs to take a mid tier job and show he can win at that level. Then he would have a much better chance at the top jobs.
You are spot on about LB, Doc got that job, because at that time, with all the investigations at LB, none of the top tier coaches would touch it and he was the safe pick. As you can see, he may be the safe pick, but he isn't the right fit for LB, he wins all the games he supposed to win, but cant beat the top tier teams. He has mostly been a one and done playoff coach. He is either unsure of his system or players aren't buying in when it comes to playoff time.

South lakes job is a whole different deal. Aziz should have gotten that job, no questions asked. The guy they hired has struggled as a DC at WPot.

Tilly has struggled recently, but I think that more of a coaching issue than a talent issue. They should be the 5th best job in the county.

1) SoCo
2) WF
3) CV

4) LB
5) Tilly

6-10) Hayfield, Madison, West Pot, Robinson, South Lakes

Whichever asst coach from “Tilly” that’s keeps dreaming you’re a top tier program, please stop it. You’re kidding yourself. When’s the last time you al had a winning season? 2nd tier just cuz your enrollment size. No talent in that school.

Top 10 football jobs

1 Westfield - Good talent pool+ good coaching + community and admin support = Championships
2 Centreville - Big program lots of players new coach should = Championships
3 Lake Braddock - Always has a lot of talent coaching hurts them = disappointment
4 South County - Always has talented athletes coaching has been much better = Championship
5 Robinson - Big strong players, good scheme, but need to learn to pass the ball
6 Madison - Big strong players always fundamentally sound = success
7 Hayfield - Always has very good athletes can the coach get them to the next level?
8 West Potomac - see Hayfield
9 Woodson - Smart players + good coaching = wins games
10 South Lakes - Good athletes new coach could = wait and see

Surprising you put Madison at #6 since they have played Westfield for the regional championship 2 of the last 3 years...and have stepped on South County, and won 3 of 4 from Centreville the last two years...their kryptonite -- Stone Bridge and Westfield (and South Lakes when Trey Taylor was there).

Some of the folks adding posts about low tier coaches and high tier coaches are clueless. A win is a win. I dont personally know Aziz but he does seem to have a winning record at FC. Well respected and runs the best passing tournament in the area. I'd like to see some of the so called high tier coaches try and coach at low tier schools. That is when the rubber hit the road. Dont get me wrong, some of the coaches at the high tier schools are very good, just not sure how that would correlate to wins at say a Falls Church, WL, Wakefield, Stuart, etc. It takes a special skill set for sure and not everyone can do it right.

Sometimes it depends on being at the right place at the right time and having a DSA who knows how to surround himself with good hires, does him homework during the recruitment process and can be a creative risk taker.

I heard Aziz speak at a Nike clinic and at Dick Adams' youth clinic and he seems to be very knowledgeable, and has a good head on his shoulders. He did mention several times that he was a DC in Stafford county for several years before coming to Falls Church. Not to many other current head coaches speak at those youth clinics, but Aziz is always their promoting his program.

What are you even talking about, there are low tier program mid and high tier programs...just like in college. FC is a low tier program, Westfield is a high tier program. Again, Aziz has no quality wins, beating Wakefield Marshall Justice is not the same as beating a SL or Hayfield, West Potomac. Looks what happens when they play a mid level or high level team, they get killed.

The coaches at the mid and high level programs have paid their dues, they dont need to go to a lower tier program to prove anything.

I am sure he is a quality person and runs a good program, but as you can clearly see, he isn't getting the better jobs, because he has no quality wins against stronger teams and hasn't proved he can win at a higher level.

Shouldn't throw around the word 'clueless' with that analysis bro. If you don't know hs football enough to know how the levels of different schools come into play when evaluating results, programs and talent (players and coaches), you have clueless pretty much locked up. No offense.

P is the man. He has the most wins in LB football history and the best coach mentor for the program. He made football fun and taught life lessons along the way. He took care of his players and always had their back. They definitely did him dirty!

The clowns they have coaching there now have taken a great program and turned it to mediocre program at best. I feel bad for the players.

P was removed from the classroom and then off the field. His mouth and methods brought him down. He will never work in FCPS again so let just all it go.

The LBSS football program is better than ever because of the coaching staff. Stop kidding yourselves about the talent of the players. What those kids can do only goes so far.

All us Coach P lovers need to embrace the changes and move on. The old ways are over. Besides, school demographics changed and so did the number of players commited to playing the game. Lake Braddock coaches are doing just fine and the players love playing for them.

I see doc and his staff are posting again.
You can tell its doc and his staff because they always have excuses about why they dont win. Like all the talent is gone, the schedule was too hard, bad draw in the playoffs. LB had 4-5 D1 players and a QB that is great last year and couldn't win a playoff game. That is all on the coaching staff. They will have a lot of talent this year and will do nothing with it again. Keep telling yourself that the coaches are doing just fine and the players are having fun being mediocre. How about this, stop making excuses and coach up the players!

What record is successful for new staff at CV? Community pushed at Haddock and it should do the same with Shields. Haddock was 8-2 last year, an upgrade is 9-1 right? Don't pull the LB cap about the kids are well behaved to mask things. They need to beat either SB or WF.

Shields has a serious achilles heel - his son is going to be the starting QB. No way coach pulls his son, even if it means the difference between winning or losing a game. Two years with Jack under center is going to be a crap shoot. Wish both well, but that's a problem just waiting to bubble up - and sooner rather than later.

Great question, what does happen if Shields can’t match Haddocks record fbis past season? Plus their opener is STONE BRIDGE! Mickey dropped 70 on LB last season, he may try for triple digits just because. And what if Shields also can’t get Wildcats past the Warhawks, all that drama caused by parents & boosters for worse results, careful what you wish for.

Say he has to go to QB2 for whatever reason, who they gonna go with? They don’t have a plan B.

Set his own boy up for failure. If the boy was special he'd start at WF.BTW, who beat both WF and SB in back to back seasons? Coach P. So it has been done twice. No excuses like the Doc crew and a 70 burger.

How would his kid be eligible to play? Has to have a change in residence, correct?

Speaking as a former player of one school... don't let any of the football stuff effect your decision that much. With that being said, I just talk with him about it. If he really is focused on winning and all that jazz I'd take that into consideration, and if he would rather be actually playing keep that in consideration.
I can speak more in-depth about a few programs as well

I don’t know, Mr. LaPlante. What do you think about him?

Took the old McLean coach to be OC. Shields 1st huge blunder. Maybe HC will have to take over play call. Wait! He had to be removed as play caller at WF. This is facts bro.Sanabria doesn't know football and listened to little coaches. Haddock will find respect while laughing at this shit show. They will go 7 and three, maybe win 1st round then done.8-4 at best

Traitors? Are you a Centreville troll trying to stir up something? I've heard nothing but positive comments from Westfielder's about Shields getting that job. He is greatly respected and loved and everyone I have talked to thinks he deserved the job.

Sure Shields is fantastic, but he was a career assistant. With the writing on the wall he buttered up some Centreville people with the promise of a QB. He went to our arch rival. Why not apply at Oakton or SL? If Noah graduated this year would he have uprooted the boy? Great guy, nice kid, but if you don't think this was schemed up you have no clue.

ah poor bulldog babies....something did not go your way for once so bring out your pissy, school girl attitude.

Just like that little Olivia Jade bitch whining as a victim now that everyone found out her mommy bribed her way into USC. First time in her life she did not get her way.....

Is the worst coach in Loudoun going anywhere? Crybaby Lalli that is...think his bro coaches in ffx.

High school football sucked and was the worst experience ever. What a joke. Good players stuck at crappy schools with horrible coaches and crappy players at good football schools get all the glory.

Rich people rent apartments to go where they want. Coaches, ADs and Principals all “investigate” and say all is good. What’s the point??

Rock Ridge itself is the absolute worst school in LoCo. Lazy teachers and Amin who don’t want to work with the few kids who need some extra because most of the kids teach themselves.

High school has been a total disappointment. New school much better. At least we got 1 good year

I saw that they are tearing down the stands at Annandale’s football stadium. Have things gotten so bad there they are abandoning the sport?
