Kudos to South County on the win. They are a solid team and deserved the victory.

Westfield has struggled the last two seasons with size in the semis and both times they could not overcome it. They just have not dominated the lines like they used to. I thought Kim had an OK game. He missed a few throws but he also had some drops. He did a superb job of managing that game and keeping Westfield out negative plays. That was a heck of defense South County brought and he nearly pulled it off. Good luck SoCo.

Sorry, South County but teams with green in their uniforms don't win championship games. Can anyone remember the last time that happened? Same thing happens with auto races. Green cars never win.

Westfield ran a fake punt from their end zone? On a fourth and nine from their own three yard line? That was pretty cool. You'll never see that again. Ever. Oh, they converted it.

Does anyone really think SoCo wins that game if Max and Mikal were in that game for Westfield? Not a bad performance from Westfield considering they were missing the best defensive player and best RB in NOVA.

Westfield isn't going anywhere. You are going to be sorely disappointed if you think they will not be contenders next year.

How? JV team hasn't performed up to the standard for a couple of years. Neither has their Freshman teams. It's over, done put a fork in them.

The other poster could be right, expect Simmons to move onwards to a private school job just like Westfield's previous coach did!!! Or he could be in line to move down to the 757 and take the ODU job!

As usual most posters on this forum lack a fundamental understanding of how Westfield football works. The performance of their freshman and jv teams has little to do with their varsity results. Westfield is about player and team development. This year's senior class was 5-3 as freshman. The next year their jv team was 5-2-1. But they went 13-1 and to the state semis as seniors.

Anyway, Simmons will still have a kid at Westfield so he for sure isn't leaving just yet. He likes a challenge - he would relish being in the role of an underdog.

That's because Noah did not play with them on freshman or JV. It's easy to improve when you add a power 5 quarterback to your group.
The area that will allow them to improve is the two or 3 transfers that will show up before next season.

Lost a ton of respect for South County coach’s and majority of their players (minus Spalding & QB Matthew and a couple others who actually knew how to win without making clowns of themselves and conducted themselves with sportsmanship) the lack of class is horrible. Having a soco player flip off the stands during pregame warm ups and then a coach to give him a high five for doing so, you are garbage sir, as an adult you should know better. Coach’s talking shit to players before during and even after the game in the handshake line is reprehensible, real good role models. Then some kids acting like your peeing on the W at midfield, you must make your parents real proud. All those involved are pieces of SHIT! Glad my kid is not coached by you or have anything to do with you. Btw, Oscar Smith is gonna beat the brakes off of you. Coach Panini, you are the biggest POS for running such a classless program, smug douchey little garden gnome!

Not a WF parent, in fact I have connection to either school/team. Just went to the game to see a good game. (It really was, by the way) While I think the above poster may have gone a little overboard, I do agree a few SoCo players crossed the line. As soon as the final play was over, #47 ran to the center of the field and did the Ole Miss dog peeing thing. No celebrating with his teammates, no high fives, he just took off and did his little show. No doubt that was 100% planned. Numbers 3 and 13 ran immediately to the WF sideline and started taunting at talking trash. Really very classless. I don’t know anything about the SoCo coach, although I have read some opinions about him. But my kid plays on one of the teams SoCo played and beat handily, and my kid and his teammates felt like the SoCo players were, overall, some of the more respectful and discipline kids they played. So I can’t believe its a coaching issue.

Westfield isn’t clean in all of this either. I was on the WF side for the game, and on several occasions saw #’s 17 and 7 for WF running their mouths to some SoCo players. So whatever was said in the line after the game was probably warranted.

I did love, however, how the WF PA announcer made a reminder that sportsmanship to the officials and players is a very important part of HS football. And that when he did this the WF coach had called a timeout for the sole purpose of chewing one of the officials ass. Not hypocritical at all.

Folks, Society has entered high school sports a while ago and is here to stay. Pro athletes talk trash and do stupid celebrations. ESPN analysts support all of it. Etc. Highlights often show flexing and trash talking. These kids see this stuff and believe it’s ok. They love it.
Coaches are in it as well. The older coaches that were strictly play and no show are gone. And if they are still coaching, they have to bend on this stuff or the kids leave or cry and moan that the coach is too strict (parents too). I will agree that many, many coaches are bad role models. But I will say that the positive coaches are fighting the bs theatrics on a daily basis. If you want to win over the kids and parents, they have to bend. It does suck.

I see often that old school folks can’t stand when this unsportsmanlike crap happens. Sorry folks, those days are just about gone. Good example are the negative issues coaches deal with. A coach disciplines a kid for being an ass on the field. Before, during, or after the game. Mom and Dad complain. Coach sticks to his/her guns and kid is disciplined. Parents go past coach to AD. AD supports coach. Parents go to Admin. Admin will most likely bend cuz they don’t want parents to go to central office admin. If school Admin support AD and Coach then parents go to central office. Central office always bends and sides with parents. So do you blame coaches for turning their cheeks on stupid unsportsmanlike crap kids do? Stick up for the right thing and the coach has to deal with crap from parents for weeks. A lot of times the season is over and coaches are dealing with these parents.
It really isn’t always a coach not being a role model but parents being bad role models. Society. It ain’t the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, or early 2000’s anymore.
Wish it was.

Doesn't matter if Simmons isn't attracting / recruiting better players anymore it's over for them. The only teams that can consistently play 15 games are magnets for the best players in their area. That bull crap about his ability to develop talent is a fartcycle that Westfield fans lick up on a regular basis.

When a team wins, they need to act like winners and not losers! WTH?!? The SOCO DSA and principal need to discipline those specific players so that BS doesn’t escalate here amongst these teams in NOVA. It doesn’t take much for things to get out of hand so a few swift punishments will fix that.

Things go both ways. Westfield fans and stands are awful. The students arrive early during warm ups and make fun of the other team constantly. They use profanity and pick on players based off of looks. The administration watches it happen eatery game and does nothing. Parents in the stands scream at officials and coaches about nonsense. How is it on that an entire student section chants bullshit over and over after a call is made. These are high school kids. Society is to blame. Standards have dropped. You can’t have it both ways.

You must be exaggerating. Or perhaps you are recalling how things might have been in some prior era. But the behavior you are describing is not something I see or hear at games. The only students I heard chanting obscenities was South County and that was at both the Lake Braddock and Westfield games.

if you think that trash talking isn’t a very big part of the game today, you’ve probably been not paying that much attention. A vast majority of the players talk **** in every game... it’s become natural. Also you’re dreaming if you think there’s only a few coaches that talk trash

I know your reading comprehension skills need work. So let me help you a bit. Read my above statement a few more times so you can fully understand it. There is absolutely no mention of Smith or any other team going undefeated, 15 -0... I simply stated that the only teams that can consistently play 15 games are those that attract the best talent within their area. Westfield can no longer do that. So, don't expect much from them.

So, relax. I know you're butthurt. Maybe between now and next fall, you should find another team to follow. Not sure which team but just keep trying you'll find one. Nothing wrong with Westfield, just remember to keep your expectations low.

For us Smith fans, we know that whether we win or lose on Saturday, we'll be back. Four Coaches in 5 years, we'll be back.

BTW Oscar Smith did have an 15-0 season, State Championship in 2008. You must be drunk, lazy or just stupid. I guess you could be all 3. The 4th option, ignorance is blissful, huh?

Yep. 2008 - judging by your trolling capabilities I was probably correct you weren't born yet. A Smith fan has to spend all their time on this forum trashing Westfield and its program with a litany of made-up accusations and far-fetched if not outrageous speculation of which you clearly know little if anything about. Westfield will be fine - worry about yourself. 0-4. That's a stat you clearly think about every day. Get over it. Move on.

There's a good chance that 0-4 may be set and will never change. I don't see Westfield ever getting a chance to play Smith again. I'll accept that. But y'all know where we'll be the second week in December nearly every year!

This is FFU, there's nothing but trolling here.If you're expecting anything different, you're in complete denial.

I'm not a WF fan, but damn Cletus, They won 3 straight titles and then went to two straight semis after that. And they were overmatched talent-wise in both of those games and still put up a fight and both of those games could have gone either way. Goes to show what coaching can do. But it's good to see other NoVa teams make a run for the championship other than WF. Hope SoCo doesn't roll over and play dead like Freedom did last year.

Smith can shut down a team's run game and thier top receiver. Forge made the mistake of focusing too much on #1 Copeland and they still couldn't prevent him from causing fumbles, running a kick-off back for a TD AND throughing a TD, half back option play!! On Smith's 4th & 8 scramble TD pass, 2 defenders rolled up on Copeland and left the safety to cover the wide open crossing route!

Smith has players with near Piercy Harvin talent that haven't even touched the ball in the play-offs. Look for those guys to get turned loose and Coach Scott to finally open up his full playbook on Saturday!!! I expect a couple of dual QB sets and more trickeration plays. It should be fun!!!

It's pretty simple really. Westfield has shuffled too many of their best athletes to their offense. That's not where winning is at. They have been in 7 straight state semi-finals and won 3 and lost 4.

Look at the number of points the defense let up in those 7 games:

Wins:
8
12
7

Losses:
35
21
35
28

They need to focus on getting back to a dominant defense. Defense wins championships. Get the best players back on defense.

Where are the players going to come from? I'd rather go play for Tusky, we'll dominate class 4. Freedom is going to recruit all the players in Woodbridge and Westfield will probably never get past SoCo again!

Didn't someone here on FFU say that Simmons is gonna take a private school job?

What is "throughing a TD" and who is "Piercy Harvin"

Do they not teach you how to read and write down there in the big, bad 757??

Kicking their best defensive player (by far) off the team in the middle of the playoffs certainly didn't help. Probably cost them another trip to the finals.

Play by the rules or you don’t play. It’s simple and it keeps players’ attention. We should expect all coaches to hold all kids accountable both on and off the field or they don’t even dress.

No one else does. Despite what anyone says this was a coaches decision - he was eligible to play.

I think Smith will win. Bigger & more athletic than Soco. Westfield did so well against them mainly due to coaching. Pannoni is no Simmons.

50/50. Other than Centreville and Madison in Week 1 and 2 they's only had one other competitive game on their schedule and they lost that one to Broad Run. So it is hard to tell how good they really are.

K. Lambert is Cam Chancelor's nephew. Maury has ammassed as much talent, maybe even recruited anyone & everyone available to help get him a State Championship. They are the closest thing to an all star team in the 757 this year. But afterwards, don't expect much from them. No feeder program has been developed and with 90% percent of the talent graduating, there will be a big fall off next year.

Varina manhandled Highland Springs but couldn't pull out the win vs Maury. Saddly, I think Stone Bridge drops another State Title.

So, the troll has turned out to be right!!! I joke with y'all because it's too easy to pull your chain. But I will remind you. How many times have I predicted that the South Region is about to dominate VA HS Football?

Let's see how things go, BUT realize that on Saturday the Southside of the 757 is going to have 3 teams that will be playing for State Championships!!!!

Class 4
Lake Talyor

Class 5
Maury

Class 6
Oscar Smith

Additionally, here is the most updated MaxPreps VA HS Football Rankings. The HUGE story from the below rankings. A. The TOP 5 are ALL Class 5!!!! SoCo @ # 7 is the first Class 6 school from Northern VA. Then #13 is Westfield, Northern VA's powerhouse team which will likely be favored again to return to the State Playoffs in 2020 is actually ranked lower than a private school with a losing record!!!! Last, there are NO OTHER teams in the top 25 rankings from Northern VA in Class 6, period. Debate OVER, it's official, SOCCER & Lacrosse are replacing football in Norther Virginia. Sad day, y'all ought to be ashamed!!!

Looks pretty clear Northern VA schools aren't going to be doing much. Y'all are going to be the South Region's patsies from here on out!!!

# School Ovr.

Im a NoVa guy and I don’t put as much weight on the MP rankings, but this young man does have a point. Particularly about the lack of conversation and excitement on this thread. I’ll be fascinated to see Saturday’s results.

Who cares, participants in football are on a rapid decline. All over the country there are less and less players playing football. Look at the numbers, they dont lie.
Most NFL players have said they will not let their kids play football and others are following.. In the next 5-10 years, a lot of HS will be dropping football because of lack of interest. Lacrosse, baseball and basketball will be the "Big Three!

So enjoy it while you can, because its not going to around much longer.

Mickey and Company in big trouble on Saturday. Look at who they have played since getting handled by Broad Run in the regular season finale.

They had a bye, then beat Potomac Falls (4-6), Woodgrove (6-4), and North Stafford (6-4).

I challenge you to find an easier path to a 5A state Final ever! It has never happened before.

They had one of the easiest 5A schedules in the state. This is the weakest offensive line and quarterback they have ever had, and their best wide receiver is out.

Broad Run was able to key on their only real weapon and hold him in check.

Mickey can't win the big one but is still a good coach and will throw some wrinkles in that confuse Maury, but the talent difference is too great.

Maury by 2-3 touchdowns - maybe more if they pile it up at the end.

Tuscarora will defeat Lake Taylor in 4A to give Northern Virginia its' only champ this season.

Oscar Smith and South County in a slugfest, with Smith winning in the second half.

Ok, let's see a comparison of either a better poll or your own opinion of the whole State Rankings?!

This will end up just like last year. Freedom squeaked by WF and then got shit stomped out of them against mannie. Without Westfield, the north can't put up a decent team. And Westfield only stays competitive because of Simmons. Once he's gone, they're in trouble. SoCo has almost no chance against Smith. Simmons coaches his teams up to always stay in the game and have a chance to win. And we all know Panini is no Simmons.

And time4change is right. SYA is the best feeder system in the north and the coaches are seeing a rapid decline in the number of kids that are coming into that league. It started with the others like fpyc and bryc and now has reached the western part of the county. Demographics and concussions will kill football in NoVa.

You MIGHT be a coach (doubtful, based on how you rant on and on about the almighty South) but you don't understand MaxPreps. Its algorithm rewards teams that continue to win, unless something unusual happens (i.e., Highland Springs is still ranked highly because they played a killer schedule this year; Varina is where they are because they played a very good schedule AND beat HS). That is why the teams you see in the top spots are where they are.

As for your chest puffing about three teams being in the finals, OK. Yes, they made it. However, odds are about even overall for al three of them winning. Lake Taylor probably loses to Tuscarora. Maury beats Stone Bridge (they are not what they have been, and benefited from a very easy playoff schedule). Smith and South County is a toss up.

It's just my opinion but I think the algorithms on VHSL Reference are more accurate than MaxPreps. You do understand these are not "polls" but simply computer generated rankings? Anyway, VHSL Reference will not update their rankings again until the season is completely over - then let's see how that compares. It will be more accurate I guarantee that.

Basically, for those who care to know, in 2017 MaxPreps (CalPreps actually) changed their algorithms in order to give more weight to lower class teams. This resulted in a big surge in Class 3-4-5 teams in Virginia being ranked much higher than previously and Class 6 teams much lower overall than previously. There was some justification for their change but in my opinion it grossly over-weighted the lower classes.

Honest question: when is the last time Westfield was blown out? They always seem to stay in the game, regardless of who they play

Blown out blown out? Centreville 28-0 in 2013. Lost 35-14 to Centreville same year but they were competitive in that game. Lost by 18 to Stone bridge in 2016 but again they were in the game until mid-way through the second half. That's the last game they lost by more than a touchdown in the last five years.

They are 115-12 under Simmons so not many losses to chose from.

But as you know they suck, are one of the worst teams in Virginia and not only that they are on a downward spiral.

Didn’t the guy before Simmons have similar results at WF? And guess what- the next staff will do well also. Similarly, the LB guy has his team back to making a deep playoff push but if you read FFXU you’d think the previous coach was far better for some reason.

Put the Westfield staff at Lee then tell me how great they are. It’s all about the Billy’s and Joes as its always been. A staff is only as good as their players. Conversely, a bad staff can waste talent (looking at you Stonebridge...).

Doc has made 1 deep playoff run in 3 years, the previous coach did it for 10 straight years, tell me about it when Doc does it consistently. Agree about a bad staff!! Look at LB staff they had 10 players to play at the next level last year 3-4 are at D1 level and will have similar numbers this year. With that kind of talent they should be competitive with anyone in the state. But they are only competitive with teams that are average, in 3 years Doc hasn't beaten a top 5 team. That's coaching, not having players play at a high level against the best teams.

Look at poythress first 6-7 years. Consistently 5-5. Doc has not started great and started with more, but it takes awhile to full install a system and belief. Let’s see how next year goes. If he has the same type of season, then he’s equal to what P was

Poor Mickey - going to come up short once again. Don't let the 12-1 record fool you. This might be his weakest team in the last 10 years. Especially with their Maryland commit WR out for the year. Cole (Oakton transfer - but can you blame the dad or the kid) is fantastic, but quarterback isn't capable of leading team down the field and this is the weakest offensive line for sure.

Look at how they got here! A bye, a win over Potomac Falls (4-6), win over Woodgrove (6-4) and win over North Stafford (6-4). That might legitimately be the easiest path to a state championship game in Class 5 history.

Their best win was over a slightly above average Madison team. They got worked over by Broad Run in their only tough game.

Tuscarora is legit, however, and will bring a 4A championship home to Northern Virginia.

South County is very, very good and has a real shot, but I think they fall just short in the end.

Doc you and your cronies need to get your facts straight, before you come on here.
Are you even serious trying to compare yourself with Poythress? P took over LB when the program was down and built it into a top 5 program. Doc took over an established winning program and has done nothing with all the talent he has had. One and done with last years with 10 players that are playing at the next level. Name 1 signature win that you have? Westfield? Stone Bridge? Centreville? Madison? You are 1-4 against SOCO your main rivalry. So tell me again that you are equal...STFU

You are really a bunch of little girls. Am I really reading this? Really? Making fun of other coaches and their staff? This is high school football in Fairfax County. My friend told me about this site and I did not believe him. This is great. Former has been high school football coaches making 50,000 a year coaching football at a place that nobody cares. This is very comical and entertaining. Please keep it coming. You guys seriously are as pathetic as teenage little girls making fun of other girls. Great stuff...lol

Smith's D is at a different level. Highland Springs only scored 13 points (their lowest point total all year) and their Winning TD may have been the worst call of the whole year. No other team scored 16 points until the playoffs (Landstown & C.Forge). This a Defense which averaged only 8.2 points per game and no RB gained over 100 yds.

Their Offense features an RPO QB with over 41 TD passes yet has no 1 receiver within the top receiving ratings in the 757 area! Last week it was mentioned that R. Copeland was a decoy which C. Forge should be careful keying too much upon. Well, they did!! AND, it caused them to give up 2 TDs. The halfback pass was executed perfectly because the whole defense was stupid enough to think he was running an unprotected pitch sweep and let the FB run unabated to catch that pass... The scramble pass worked perfectly again because the LB & corner crept up on Copeland as he made his way into the flats. The slot receiver easily made his way past the safety in his crossing pattern. Without any deep support, it was an easy TD!

Coach Scott has brought his Bishop Sullivan staff to Chesapeake. The is the staff that developed a game plan which nearly upset IMG Academy 2 yrs ago!!! They haven't fully opened up the playbook all year and they have not used their secret weapon in the playoffs. That Kid has comparable skills to R. Copeland, too. I expect to see some dual QB sets and South County won't be able to stop either!!!

You have been warned!!! BTW this team is very young & will lose inly about 6 seniors. So, look for some repeat years coming down the line!!!!

Seems to me I remember when OS came into the Championship Game with 2 5 Stars on the DL as a big favorite against Centreville and got smoked 35-6.It took their "cheating coach" with a "recruited" Tidewater All Star team at OL the next year to beat them in OT.

How did OS ever get a white redneck QB from North Carolina to transfer to Oscar Smith? Are they actually flat out paying him or his family?

Unless it is different from last year, you can either get a one day pass for $14.99 at gamedaymagazine.com (or an annual subscription if you want that), or you can get a monthly subscription for $10 at NFHS Network (note that the NFHS Network subscription will automatically renew monthly if you don't cancel it).

As far as TV, I don't know but I doubt it because VHSL jealously guards their video rights.

I think SoCo has the ability to win this game but I wonder if they haven't already won their state championship. Just like Freedom last season they certainly give off the vibe that beating Westfield was good enough.

Coach Overton admitted Freedom pretty much took the week off after the Westfield game and were unprepared for Manchester both mentally and strategically. Hopefully, Pannini can real the Stallions back into focus.

And how many State Championship games has Centreville played since 2013? Oh that's right y'all got schooled by Ocean Lakes in 2014 and may NEVER return. That's OK we know where each team will be each December. Smith will still be practicing and playing football while Centreville is getting ready their synchronized swimming competions!

Good point. Centreville has been trending more towards Asians and gubmint worker households in the past decade or so. Not the right demographics for a sustained competitive football program.

If you call taking an illegally recruited all-star team into OT being "schooled" be my guest. For a team that has been schooled so many times in the finals it is odd that you come on this board talking trash continuously. Your team is rivaling Stone Bridge when it comes to championship failure.
