Three posts in on the new season thread and LBSS comes up. Just stop it. Transfer in the boundaries legally and ride on the principal merry-go-round or shut up. Stick to football, can we?

You can Bank on the Bruins being 5-5 or 6-4 at best with Doc and staff at the helm.

But that's ok, they are being significant, just not on the football field.

Hey guys. Wanted to know your thoughts on what happened to the McLean High School football program. I know they were decent back in 2013 and 2014 but have been on the decline ever since. What happened? As an alum of the team, the state of the team is appalling!

I think some of the players graduated and there are different players now. That's probably the main difference. Because when the players are different people, their skill level will also not be the same as the original people. At least, I think that's how it works, but I'm a fucking retard so....

Top teams for 2019

1. Freedom always has athletes, returns RB and 2 WRs

2. Woodson a legit D1 QB returning, with a very good OL and good skill players returning.

3. Westfield a young O line retuning with a very good RB. Not sure about the QB

4. Centreville always has a good running attack and strong defense, but who will play QB

5. Woodbridge may have the best defense in the region in 2019

6. Madison returns QB but will that be enough

7. SoCo Always has good athletes, they will make some noise

8. Battlefield New coach with about 150 players, may take a year to iron out new system

9. Hayfield returns QB and few athletes, Henderson will get a few transfers in to make them competitive.

10. LB returns a legit D1 QB, but not much else. They couldn't win a playoff game with 4-5 D1 players this year and they wont have that next year

D1 QB...? LOL. You kidding me? He’s ok nothing special.

WF goes as Kim goes.

CVHS is a bubble team because no QB. They may lose to Chantilly. 6-4 maybe 7-3

> 5. Woodbridge may have the best defense in the

Overrated and undisciplined. That D got lit up by Colgan, Colgan!!!!

> 6. Madison returns QB but will that be enough
Madison 7-3.

All depends if Pannoni stays.

Ambitious with them at 8.

Hayfield will win games they should that’s about it.

Again legit D1 QB, you throw that around pretty freely, something tells me uuu have no idea what a legit D1 QB looks like, the kid is ok better than avg but nothing special.

Shouldn’t lift other peoples posts.

In no particular order...

Freedom - South Riding - Horrible, just horrible. Not sure why.

Rock Ridge - Wouldn't be as bad if their athletes stayed instead of going to Stone Bridge.

Lee - They make the playoffs then lost to a Loudoun school by 40 or more.

Edison - See above.

Wakefield - See above.

Briar Woods - Haven't won shit since McSorley left.

Falls Church - They should be embarrassed by their schedule, but they are not.

Tuscarora AND Broad Run are moving to 4A next year for 4 year cycle?

Champe is moving to 6A.

This is who will be in the same region as Stone Bridge now...

Woodgrove - Yes, they won 4A states but still lost to Broad Run 33-7 this year. Just you know how weak 4A is compared to 5A.They also lost a shitload of seniors. Skinner used to coach under Mickey, so at least we know he can recruit. Only team with an outside chance to unseat Mickey!

Freedom - South Riding
Riverside
Briar Woods
Potomac Falls

Heard Falls Church is moving to 6A too.

Lee
Edison

Unbelievable!

Again?

This past year, they had a easy schedule, name 1 team they beat that had a winning record?

So stop talking about Justice when they haven't been relevant in football in about 25 years

Couple of corrections...

VHSL is moving to a 4 year cycle, so teams will stay in their new regions for the next 4 years instead of two.

Justice is so bad - please stop, whoever it was that posted that drivel.

Their confernece is easily the weakest imaginable in 6A.

Would be the weakest in 5A too.

Weaker than 4A.

Loudoun schools laugh when they see Falls Church, Lee, Edison, etc in the playoffs.

I can't understand how programs can be so bad, even considering the demographics.

2019 Top 10 Teams

1. Freedom - Someone has to knock them off
2. Westfield - If QB returns, looks for another state title run
3. Woodson - Talented team, good defense, well coached, poised for another run this year
4. Centreville - Good defense, no returning QB
5. Madison - Returning QB, plays fundamentally sound
6. South County - Always has athletes, could this be their year
7. Woodbridge - Always has talented athletes, but they dont play well as a team
8. Hylton - Down last year, look for them to bounce back
9. Battlefield- New coach, lots of talent to chose from. Probably a year away
10.Tied Robinson - If they get ahead of any team they will win, if they fall behind, they will lose.

10 Tied Lake Braddock - Good QB returning, they cant seem to beat good teams, maybe the coaches need to look at a new philosophy.

Easy there, cowboy. You don't want the Justice feelings police turning you into the FCPS HQ for hurting their feelings. You might end up having to explain yourself to a panel that has no time or room for the truth. Just let them beat their middle school schedule and think they are great. Whatever you do, do not tell them the truth about anything! You won't be able to handle the tears. Little bitches.

They should’ve lost to Woodson, Woodson! Qb is avg on a good day, turnover machine, they lucky to have that Soph. Wr and Rb. -3 at best

> 2. Westfield - If QB returns, looks for another

Even with a healthy Qb, hard pressed to see them even winning Refipn title, losing way to many pieces even for that staff to overcome and current Jr class is less than inspiring,’better hope for a handful of transfers. - 6/8 place

> 3. Woodson - Talented team, good defense, well

Can Acker beat LB to fully get over the hump? -1or2

> 4. Centreville - Good defense, no returning QB
Rough rough road ahead. Def not beating Madison, WF and possibly losing to CHS. Qb & Rb positions are seriously down this upcoming year. -10 at best

> 5. Madison - Returning QB, plays fundamentally

This by far not the best Madison team we’ve seen coming up but rest of Concorde will be down and they can possibly get past WF next season. -2or3

See Madison...all depends on coaching situation. -4

> 7. Woodbridge - Always has talented athletes, but

Underachieved this past season. Need to stay focused and have earlier tougher regular season opponents. -7

No Ricky Slate coming anytime soon, sorry back to middle of pack schools. -n/r

Yep you said it, year away. -n/r

Robo will be robo. Grind it out keep it close hope they don’t get holding penalties to kill drives. -9

Good pieces but lose a lot and community fed up with the mediocrity. -10

With all the talent LB has, it really is ashamed that this program has fallen off like it has.

All the Doc supporters on here, said give him a chance, well he and this staff have had 2 years

How many playoff wins has LB had under Doc? Answer is 1
They had the worse lost in program history, an embarrassing 70-3 loss to SB
No signature wins in 2 years
Spend a ton of money on new uniforms and tee shirts

I'm sorry, but, LB has a lot of talent, with a good coaching staff they should be able to win 11-12 games a year. I dont see that happening with the current crew of coaches

Doc has turned this program around at Lake Braddock, these boys are now getting scholarships to play football. When he took this program over, players were not going to class, being disrespectful to others in the building and just doing whatever they wanted. Everyone is now held accountable pay consequences for their actions.

He is mentoring these boys, building a culture to serve others and being significant as well as respectful young adults. I would say the past 2 years have been very successful. Because of Doc, we are a family at Lake Braddock.

I couldn’t have said it better myself; in fact, at first I thought that was my post.

Say whatever you want, FFXU. On the inside of the program, we are thrilled with the Bruins! The program is solid and we are proud of the direction these young men are headed.

Money? Big donors tend that program so just relax. Besides, the money is well spent and LB doesn’t have near the funding others have.

What do u mean “now” getting. Coach Doc get off the ffxu. LB has always had plenty of kids go D1 before Doc got there and will continue to do so after he leaves. Let’s see how many he has for the 2019 season where he is mainly responsible for cultivating the talent, cuz let’s face it, the kids who went on to play at the next level were because of coach P and his staff, not doc.

Just a question, two years ago, didn't Westfield freshman go undefeated? If so they should do ok locally. I dont think WHS will see another team like they have had the last 4 years.

SL job still advertised. Must not have liked who applied. Oakton job announcement is down. Still doesn’t mean any good candidates.

Why are there so many openings at Stuart? Did they have guys get better gigs?

When is 2019 schedule posted and all state selections?

Early predictions, PWCO schools take a major step backwards. Yorktown, SoCo, SL, WTW, CVHS & Chantilly, that’s eight, your Chantilly Chargers will rule the roost this upcoming season.

Biggest disappointments. LB, Madison, WF, Woodbridge, Hylton.

All State selections were made, I believe posted on the VHSL site
I think the schedules are out as well

2019 Top 5

1 Freedom - Returns QB and a ton of athletes
2 Westfield - If Kim cant go they will find a QB
3 Woodson - Returns QB and a huge O line, good skill kids
4 SoCo - Always has dangerous athletes, this could be their year
5 Madison - Very fundamentally sound, tough and gritty

Best of the rest

Centreville
Robinson
Woodbridge
Battlefield
Yorktown

Hayfield and surprise...TCW will beat teams with just their athleticism alone. Overall looks like a down year for NOVA football. 804 or 757 to win it all, only way 703 will be competitive is if 8-10 studs all transfer to same HS like everyone but FCPS schools.

Why is the SL job taking so long to fill? Can they not get Poythress to apply?

I hear whoever the new Oakton coach is, he’s already hit the road recruiting. I hate that for Robinson.

And then there’s TJ. I guess that job is now open. What if no one applies?

Any kid willing to leave Robinson for Oakton isn’t worth worrying about. Oakton May have been the worst football team ever assembled in the Concorde District last year. Robinson hasn’t been great lately, but they’ve been competitive. They would have beaten Oakton by 60 last season.

Dave Murray should be the frontrunner for the SL job, if he turned it down, then they are back to square 1.

Oakton, no one wants, it could take up to 3-4 years before they will be competitive. Maybe a young Madison assistant would be interested and the school would have patience as they go thru the building process

Being too kind, may have been worst team in the history of Oakton football and North region.
Glad that HC is gone. He ruined Oakton football, will take 5+ yrs to regroup after that. Dude ran a wishbone for Pete’s sake!!!!!!! He’s not qualified to coach AB for Vienna youth.

Hey at Oakton, you got nowhere to go but up. The clown they hired for this past season was an absolute joke, shame on the administration for handing the program to him. One year and gone, thank goodness.

Now don't get me wrong, they were horrible this past season. With a decent coach who surrounds himself with good hard working coaches, the team could easily improve.

Regarding SL, one would think that the administration would promote from within, they have been fairly successful the last few seasons, why mess with the chemistry.

Chantilly has a great shot at being a 4+ seed in the playoffs next year with a strong running game, athletes on defense, and an easy schedule expect the Chargers to come hot into their district games.

Completely agree, we will leap frog CVHS this year and push WF. I can see 3rd or maybe 2nd in Concorde district. As for the next 2-3yrs, we will be contending for district and region titles. Amazing what a young GOOD energetic coach can do to a program, take note Oakton. But getting back to next few years, we have really good talent and size coming up so we will be the team to beat.

Chantilly will be better in record only next season. Their schedule is much easier. Whoever runs the office needs to be fired. It’s the most unorganized and poorly coached unit I’ve seen. They have some talent, but it will be wasted by the offensive staff.

You make zero sense. Only hope you are one of those negative ass parents who’s kid graduates this year so we don’t have to hear you at the games anymore. Coach Curry has the program pointed in the right direction and in a couple of years we will be on top of the Concorde.

FCPS highly encourages the head football coach to be in the building fulltime.
Poythress is retired, so look for him either at a private school or a different county within the next year.

Yea P got a huge settlement from FCPS for how they tried to do him dirty.
He is now retired and doing some broadcasting for Gameday Magazine.

He wont coach in Fairfax County anymore, but you could see him at a private school or maybe even in PW or LC. He could team up with SB this coming season, just to get back in.

Poythress was wrong and caught. He was done wrong too. His settlement was clearly a beauty. Next up for a settlement? Dan Meier! I hope he gets twice what Coach P got too because he was trapped and cheated by some jealous bitch. She didn’t know the whole school would crumble because of her scam. She’s running scared too.

We enjoy our football program and our coaches. Can we get some apologies and some explanations for what FCPS has done to our school? Someone throw a penalty flag on the interim pyramid and HR first and then call a personal foul on the superintendent for letting it get so bad!

A little surprising if true. He’s interviewed for 6A jobs each of the last several offseasons and appears to be as, if not more qualified than the guys who ended up getting the job (ahem Oakton). Either he’s a terrible interview or everyone is afraid to give a minority coach an opportunity. Are there any minority coaches doing well in Fairfax County, at any level, that he could point to as an example?

The only way this makes sense is that SL didn’t want a minority coach. Kind of surprising, but this is FCPS where diversity is great, as long as it’s inside the beltway.

Well there you go, Aziz doesn't want to put the work into building a program, he wants and turnkey program. Oakton could be a very good program, it just will take time and energy. Its probably the reason he hasn't got a better job then FC, the DSAs can sense that in his interviews.

LB was 0-10 Poythress rolled up his sleeves and turned that around.

Woodson hadn't had a winning season in a decade, Van aker turned that around.

Hayfield hadn't won a district title in a few years, Henderson has now won 3 in row.

Well, before he got there, FC had not won the district or made the playoffs since the 70s. Still doesn’t make any sense why an experienced assistant would get hired over him?

Falls Church was 0-10 before Aziz arrived, and had only one one district championship in the history of the school, and that was in the mid 70’s. He’s wn 3 or 4 in 6 years. FC is a school where most students don’t come from a culture of playing HS sports, so he has to recruit the kids, the convince their parents to let them play. It’s also a relatively poor school, so he has to do a lot of fund raising just to provide basics for the kids.

So I promise you he’s not afraid of a little work. He passed on the Oakton job last year because his wife was expecting their first child, and he knew he wouldn’t be able to put in the time required to rebuild for a year, and didn’t feel that was fair to the Oakton kids.

Aziz has definitely proved himself. It’s hard to sell this pick as anything other than race driven.

FC always has an easy schedule. look at the teams they play, anyone with a winning record they have lost too. Wining district titles at FC, doesn't mean much as the other districts are much better. Look what happens to them in the playoffs, they get blown out!

If Aziz want to move to the next level in the county, he needs to take the jobs like Oakton or Woodson, when they are available and get them back on track. That will earn him much more respect then district titles at FC.

Dude, who gives a shit? Its not like he applied for South County, Westfield or Lake Braddock! We are talking about South Lakes here, in the Liberty Distict not the Concord. Is South Lakes a Top Tier job? Is along the same lines of Oakton or Woodson.

But it sounds like he turned Oakton down again this year. Perfect opportunity and being so close to FC he probably could have kept his staff intact. You can’t turn down jobs (multiple times) then play the race card. It looks like he’s waiting for the turn key job like someone else said. And now there’s a track record of being picked over that will play into every interview he goes on moving forward. Is he stuck at FC?!

I actually talked to Aziz about this, he only applied for Oakton the first time, and was really excited about the job. His wife had some type of complication after giving birth and it required him to take some leave, and not start right away at Oakton like he wanted to. Wouldn't have been fair to the Oakton kids.

Loudoun County Teams would blow out most of the Fairfax teams, so whats your point?

GTFO. Without the blatant cheating, recruiting players, your 3 decent schools would be shit. Play with kids in your own boundary and SB, BR & Tusky would be 7-3 at best playing in FCPS. And you all still can’t win the big game and. It matters most.

If they have any other QB you can add 3 maybe 4 more losses, LB, MHS, WTW, maybe Champe and or Chantilly

Oakton will probably open up again. SoCo will be open soon, maybe next year. Probably Hayfield also, as Henderson tires of Route 1 antics and his LB QB graduates. Falls Church will open up if Aziz can find anything else. He obviously wants out.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Chantilly vacant again, and South Lakes open up after they realize their new coach is an incompetent jerk.

If SoCo job were to open I think it would attract several current head coaches. I could see some of the Westfield assistants put their name in also. SoCo has loads of talent, but they are consistently inconsistent.

I don’t care if they do have a weak schedule, an assistant from a bad team shouldn’t get a job over a tenured head and successful head coach. What was SL thinking?

In next year or 2 can easily see Haddock and Simmons stepping down, for 2 completely opposite reasons. CVHS boosters and asst coaches are wearing thin of their HC.

Simmons, can’t go anywhere but down so may as well step aside and let a younger guy rebuild, cuz this will be the year finally the might Bulldogs regress back to everyone else. This was a senior heavy team and the jr’s were less than impressive, other than Qb & who knows if he’ll be the same physically or mentally.

Oakton: Seems like they made a good choice, considering they probably didn't get many qualified/quality applicants. The guy has coached some really good defenses for Woodson and LB when he was there.

South Lakes: I am not sure what they were thinking here. They picked an assistant with no HC experience and not a very good track record as a DC. I would think they had more quality applicants to chose from.

Time will tell for both, I suspect both teams will struggle this year.

Doc and the staff has the team fired up for this season, this will be "The Year of the Bruins"

Toughness - Discipline - Significance - Best staff in the State

They have a new schedule starting this year and they are returning some very good players. I hope everyone jumps on the Bruin train to start, if not watch out, the train will be rolling you over.

They had quite a few boys from last years team who will be playing college football, thanks to this wonderful staff.

Go Bruins!

Going to be interesting to see how Morgan does at Oakton. He is obviously a great DC, can he make the transfer. How will Woodson do without him? They lost that great Sr class and their DC. Going to be interesting.

Waiting for Aziz to file some kind of complaint. Probably have a good case. Maybe he can move to Clifton next to Poythress.

0-10 if he’s lucky and he has McLean or Langley he may win one of those games but the outgoing HC (with his stupid looking haircut) did scorched earth policy on his way out and will be a long road to recovery.

A few things will help the new coach at Oakton succeed.
1. getting the players to come out and buy in
2. coaching staff, its crucial he gets the right people to support him
3. patience from the alumni, boosters and admin, it may take some time to rebuild

Hard to say how well he will do at Oakton, Defense wins games, but an exciting offense may get more players out and support from the fans.

Too bad they had neither, 483pts allowed last season, total could’ve easily been higher if not for a running clock in the 2nd half and most coaches showing mercy by putting in freshman team in the 4th qtrs. 42pts scores all season, again bulk of those were scored in the 4th qtr against freshman defenses. Langley & Chantilly could’ve posted shut outs against them if the coaches wanted to. Historically bad bad team, probably one of the worst I have ever seen, glad my kid won’t be there next season.

Oakton obviously had the wrong coaching staff last year and that lead to the horrible season.

With the right coaching staff and getting the players to buy in and trust the coaches, this program could get turned around within 2 years. It will take a huge effort on the part of the players, coaches, community and administration.

1st year: Re-building starts, Be competitive and win a couple games (Langley, McLean are winnable) it will be hard work, but it will pay off

2nd year: Players start to buy in, Continue to be competitive. win a few games, maybe 3-4 wins

3rd year: Players have bought in and things will start to turn around maybe 5-5 6-4

I love to play football. In high school and later in high school we had our own excellent football team, which showed excellent results. And all of the exhausting reengineering, I think. After them I came home, fell on a pillow and fell asleep instantly. And girls in swimsuit who supported us constantly. It was something))

They should have fired the piss poor DSA and administration at Oakton for making such a terrible hire last year. Zero accountability. Absolute embarrassment.

SB 60 - CVHS 0 at half time. Gonna be ugly.
SB 42 - MHS 7 at the half, Mickey will bust out his “feels like a loss” speech.
I knew LB (Doc) would drop SB from schedule after the butt whoopin they got last season. C’mon if you’re the best staff & team in the state, shouldn’t have replaced SB with sorry Marshall HS.

I think everyone agrees that Doc and staff has done a terrific job at LB. They really have turned that program around and have been difference makers as well as significant.

This will be Doc's 3rd year with the LB program and what a year they are expecting to have. It has also been mentioned that they have the team to win it all this year. Stay tuned, football season will be on us before we know it.
I think this is the year that everyone will be jumping on the Bruin Bandwagon!

For all the hard work that Doc has put into this program, I think they deserved to be call the best staff in the state

Okay, I am a coach on Doc’s staff. I just stumbled across this website last Monday, and I have to say, it’s frustrating. We at lake braddock do not by any means believe we are the best staff in the state. We don’t think we are the best staff in NOVA even. We think we work hard, we love the kids, we love the community, and we love the sport. To say any staff besides highland springs is the best in the state is wrong because they’ve won the most in a row. Westfield has a fantastic staff and we look forward to competing against them again. We did not choose to drop stone bridge. That was set by our previous dsa. I love football, and I love winning. My goal is to bring a ring to braddock. However, like I said earlier, the hype is silly, and the hatred is silly. The most important thing is that we care deeply about the community and the players. Ultimately, football is a game that teaches important life values, and that to me is THE most important thing.

You know how you know you are the BEST (other than 55-4 the last 4 years)? When everyone thinks YOU are the team they need to beat to prove THEY are the BEST. Yep, that's a clue.

Yea, I agree! You are not even the best staff in your district!
All the talent you had last year and couldn't win a playoff game, that's on the coaching staff
Maybe if you focused on coaching instead of social media, you might have better results

Sounds like the LB football coaches are starting to feel the pressure of trying to keep a high profile program from declining under their watch.

Most people said from the start, Doc was not the right person for the LB job and it looks like they were right.

With all the talent they have year after year, this program should be making a deep run in the playoffs every year, under Doc 1 playoff win in 2 years.

I understand he is a nice guy and liked by fellow teachers, but he was hired to coach football, so far the results are not what is expected.

Yep and Doc leaves WTW and they make a deep run in playoffs and should’ve upset the team that went to states, they were 1 play away from state semis.

In all fairness Doc did beat WTW this year. He’s just gotten tough draws in the postseason. Football coaches in FFX county are no longer hired to win games. They are hired to be positive role models and attempt to compete. The coaches have learned that being nice to everyone will keep you employed a lot longer than winning and making enemies.

Tough draws???? That's exactly the problem with LB under Doc, excuses for everything! How about this, they should have won more games and been the top seed, they had the talent!

So what you are saying is Doc was hired to be a positive roll model and is just trying to compete? I wonder if the players know that? Maybe that's why they dont make it very far in the playoffs.

Comes down to the best coaching staffs which is why you always see the same top teams year in year out.

Colonial Forge/Woodbridge/Freedom-W

Robinson has been up and down recently. Hard to say it’s a great stuff. Just ran through their records the past few years and they have had more quality wins than I expected.
This staff has beaten:
Lake Braddock
Centreville
Chantilly (before they were bad)
Oakton (before they were bad)
Stone Bridge
Broad Run
Hylton
Hayfield
Madison
Also played Westfield and South County to a couple very close losses.

I wouldn’t say a great staff, but hard to say they are below average.

As I look at it, this past season Robinson didnt beat any quality opponents, losing to WTW (2 times) LB, SC, Hay. They were weak this past season.
Unless the coach decides to get with the times, they will once again be mediocre at best. At some point they need to think outside the box a bit.

You conveniently forgot about a 7-3 playoff Hylton team that Robinson best soundly. From the stands it appeared Robinson’s style was the main reason they were able to compete with Hylton. It looked like HS kids vs college players.

Robinson’s style allows them to win and be competitive against teams with bad and/or undisciplined athletes. They don’t develop ball players, cannot teach any kind pass defending, and have no real desire to get better. If it were still the 1970’s they might be ok. But it’s not, and they won’t.

Totally agree, apparently head of boosters organized bunch of parents to write DSA and complain about Haddock. Haddock should go to another school like South County or Lake Braddock and then beat the brakes off them

Will Noah even be cleared to play by Aug? Does suck for the Wildcats Qb’s that are already there and will have to deal with daddy-ball, thought that shit applied to youthball and over with once you got to hs.

I am hearing several Westfield assistants will be applying to this one. I am sure a few Loudon county as well as quite a few Fairfax county head coaches will as well.

They should have a very good pool of applicants for this one. I am guessing that coach Haddock will stay for the remainder of the year, then join the Westfield staff.

Rumor is that a long time coach currently in Loudoun (not at SB) will throw his name in the hat. He has won state championship before. Should be a very viable candidate.

You're talking about the old Briar Woods coach Pierce. His act dwindled after the early years and the program bottomed out. He quit using the leave of absence excuse once he knew BW was not going to return.Anyway, he applied for the new school out here and was turned away. He can coach okay, but if you thought Haddock was a tyrant, Pierce is 50 fold worse.

That's probably not a ridiculous speculation. It is a long shot but if he wants to say involved in coaching without a 24/7 schedule he would be a welcome addition. It could work out well.

The DC at WF was The OC at WF prior to Both Everitt and Giancola leaving, he was also the QB Coach that pulled young Noah up as a Freshmen, something that rarely Happens at WF. I assure you if anyone knows the Talent at QB and knows his own kids ability, it's the DC @ WF. The natural Progression would have his Son taking over the Reigns his Senior Year after Noah has moved on to Play Saturday's. Stop with the personal insults Troll.

Can’t blame WF DC wanting to go to CVHS so his son can be a 2yr starter. I think he will breath some new life into the program over there. WF better watch out, finally a scheme to match their talent level. Expect them to have a rocky start but by mid-Oct they will be hitting their stride.

Would Centreville hire a minority coach or someone out of the area?

Jerry Davis former HC at West Potomac, Herndon and current Westfield asst coach will be a very good candidate for this Centreville job.

There will be a few on the Westfield staff who apply.

I think I can confidently say that the Concorde district is up for grabs this year. With the the shake up at CVHS and more than likely that WF will lose half of their staff as they go across town to CVHS, Bulldog dominance is likely over, add on top of all the seniors that will be gone and big question mark at QB, Warhawks or Chargers will challenge for district title.

LB and the Doc are ready to be the front runners in the region this year!
With Westfield and Centreville down, look for the Bruins to be the team to beat.

We have more returning this year then all of the teams in our district including a QB and some new receivers that will light up the scoreboard.

Jump on the BRUIN Train as it will be rolling thru the region soon

Poythress? If he applies (which I doubt)it is a no brainer.Verbanic is staying at FH and coaching baseball. The WF coordinator is a coordinator! As good as he may be why is he making his first application now? All the other names here are retreads.Anyway, I hear Poythress has no interest based on the way he was treated.with Verbanic out and only retreads then maybe the DC has a case.

Cuz they recruit those players. They may have 1 or 2 superstars but takes 11 players on the field, Off-Def-SP to win games, all 11 pulling the same direction but also they have not had the better QB to win the big games. Look at this past season 6A state championship game. Brendan Clark, ND commit, he lit up Freedom and no turnovers meanwhile Freedom’s QB was erratic and a turnover machine (all season long). Go further back, state games QB turnovers are always the difference between winning & losing. OScar Smith 0-3 vs WF why, WF QB’s did not throw crucial picks most of the time in the opponents side of the field. Centreville beating OS, Scott Walters outplayed Shonn.

Mount Vernon was 19-53 in the seven seasons before he was hired. They are 20-13 during his three seasons. He’s getting the absolute maximum out of that program. I don’t think anyone could have done better.

Out of these top 6, I would say Poythress and Shields would be the top 2 candidates for the Centreville job

Aziz is the current HFC at Falls Church - has won a few District titles, but hasn't faired well with the better teams. He would be a better fit at a lower level

Blair was HFC at McLean - he didn't do much at all in 4 years, but had little talent to work with.

Davis was HFC at West Pot and Herndon - he had a few winning seasons at West Potomac, but didn't really do much at Herndon. Comes from a winning program in Annandale

Henderson was the HFC at West Pot and is the current HFC at Hayfield - he has had success at both schools. His reputation has been questioned at times, but he has been a winner everywhere he has been

Lali was HFC at Chantilly - he had some good years at Chantilly, but he is the right person for this job?

Shields has been Off/Def Coordinator at Westfield - for the past 8 years or more has helped them win 3 State titles, but no HFC experience

Poythress was former HFC at Lake Braddock - turned around the LB football program in the late 2000s and made them contenders every year, winningest HFC in LB football history. He is now retired from teaching and had issues with FCPS, how interested is he really?

Who is beating him by 50. He took a doormat and has turned it into a strong program. He played Woodbridge tougher in the playoffs last year than LB did. This year they were really good. He doesn’t have much talent on the team and is 15-5 in the last 2 years. I don’t think he should be the next Centreville coach but that MV coach has made that into something I didn’t think could happen. We used to go there every year and win by 40 at halftime every year. Now they are a very tough out.

Sorry no disrespect, but all the wins are coming against weak teams, Falls Church, Langley Wakefield, Justice, Annandale...come on. He is no different then the Falls Church coach, big fish in a small pond.

When Mt Vernon or Falls Church beats a Westfield Centreville Madison, South County Woodson or Hayfield, then your coach will gain some respect. Until then, he should stick to the mid level jobs

So because they can beat weaker teams and pad the record, they should be considered for the top tier jobs?

They need to work their way up by going to a mid tier team and proving they can win there. Otherwise you can make all the excuses you want, you can clearly see they haven't been hired for top tier jobs for a reason.

Again no disrespect, I am sure both are good coaches, but winning at those schools will not get them the top jobs in Fairfax County

To expect them to beat those teams doesn’t seem reasonable. Moreso for FC. So how is the Aziz guy supposed to get a mid-tier job if he doesn’t get credit for what he’s done with such few resources?

Get a coordinator job at Westfield, win some region titles or a state championship, then springboard. It's a sad reality, he's turned the program around from nothing with the demographic hurdles mentioned before. But I'm not sure hiring boards see it that way, it's like looking at a resume and seeing an ivy league school vs. A community college. Same degree, but one gets less credit.

Doc is really building something special at LB, so you wont see him leaving for a long time. He is ours!

All the boys at LB, that are going on and playing college football because Doc and this staff puts the time in to working with each one, making them better players and people. So proud of to be a Bruin

Coach Monty from MV has done a bang up job turning that program around. Granted, they don't win championships but they do win. Hell, anyone can be successful at some of the larger schools that do not have the challenging demographics. That is not knocking those coaches, as I am sure they are good but they usually have a good deck of cards to play with. Let's see one of the top tier guys come in and coach at a Stuart (Justice), MV, HF, Wakefield, SL, Lee, etc. That would be a true testament to their coaching ability.

Give Monty from MV, Aziz from FC, Hendo from Hay, Hanson from York, Taylor from FX the head job at one of the top tier schools and they would be just as successful for the most part.

Just say no to re-treads.

Bullshit! Tre had his chance at SL and couldn’t get past WF. You want to talk challenging demographics, WF, CVHS, CHS, rising population of students who don’t traditionally play football, also mix in the kids from rich families that won’t let their kids play. So stop with the “challenging demographics” every school has their challenges.

MTV, HF, FC, and SL have better demographics than nearly everyone on their schedules. When they play schools with better demographics they get crushed.

Hendo has the best track record of the group, but he’s a known cheater and gets run out of every place he’s been.

Taylor has had his shot at Robinson and it didn’t go well.

Aziz and Fritts seem like good guys and they e turned their programs from terrible to solid, but they are unknowns. Name their best 3 wins as Head Coaches... I bet it doesn’t impress CVille.

I agree with the above, Fritts and Aziz has no signature wins in the last 2-3 years. They both have won a few games, but the level of competition they are winning against is terrible.

Also, I believe Aziz was offered the Oakton job and turned it down, in addition, he didn't even apply to the Woodson job, said you cant win at those places.

Well Woodson had a great year, maybe some of the mid tier jobs are diamonds in the rough, just need the right coach. Make a name for yourself at those places and you will get the respect and maybe a better chance at the top jobs.

Poythress was at several WF. He is friendly with the WF staff. Any chance he teats up with Shields? High octane O and brutal D.is it an impossibility?

Since Poythress is retired from teaching, teaming up with another coach could be a real possibility for him. Most all HFC positions require the coach to be in the school.

Should be interesting to see this unfold

Well said! To many coaches win a few meaningless games then think they are ready for the big time.

Why is Robinson so good at wrestling but their football program is mehhh? They won States yesterday and last year they were state runner ups, but they’ve been only so-so on the field. Don’t any of the wrestlers play football? They obviously have athletes. Curious case of lack luster coaching or average athletes?

Robo’s wrestling program is bolstered by a few transfers and 130 lbs white boys don’t often translate to football success. All of Robinson’s upper weights play football and were starters. They just don’t have the skill kids they used to.

Robinsons wrestling coach is one of the best in the state, while their football staff is “not great” and stuck in the 70’s.

I think both the Robinson and LB football staffs are on the hot seat this year.

Both schools have huge enrollments and a lot of athletes, but the football programs have been a disappointment the past couple years. Robinson hasn't been a threat since Bendorf left and LB since Poythress left.

Robinson and LB use to have some epic battles, now their games are an after thought.

With the talent these 2 teams are projected to have this year, another 1 and done in the playoffs for these 2 teams and coaching changes will need to take place.

I think both coaches are the wrong fit for the programs and that is why they have been a big disappointment.

Parents need to relax. Both coaches are average to above average and good people. Since Doc took over LB the program has cleaned up on and off the field. Never heard any complaints about the Robinson coach except that his offense was old-school. Both schools would end up worse off if they made a change.

I am curious to just what Doc has cleaned up on and off the field?

Anyway you look at it, on the field has been a disappointment for the past 2 years.

On the field

A. One playoff win in the past 2 years with the talent he has had, is not acceptable.

B. Losing to SB 70-3, not acceptable

C. No signature wins in the last 2 years, not acceptable

Off the field

A.Because he is liked by the teachers?
B.Tows the company line?

C. What else?

He was hired to coach football and being a nice guy is great, but clearly he is in over his head with a large program. If that's the goal of the program to be a little above average team, lets the players and parents know, so the expectations are not as high.

Coaching Records at LB

108-55 (.663) Poythress
15-8 (.652) Doc

Looks like Doc just needs a few more years and he will win just as many games as Poythress.

If he keeps going 1 and done in the playoffs, he wont get that chance!

LB over the past 2 years has had arguably some of the best talent in the region and Doc hasn't proved he can win at a high level with it. They had 4-5 D1 players this year!!

Why aren't they making a deep playoff run or at least being competitive with the best teams? The players are there, the program support is there, it has to be the coaching!

Since the 2004 State Championship Robinson has won 2 or more playoffs games just one time.
Bendorf 6 seasons - 0
Taylor 2 seasons - 0
Meier 1 season - 0
Vossler 5 seasons - 1

The Rams have been average for a while and it started under Bendorf.

Coach P had to slowly build a pathetic program from the ground up. Doc inherited a powerhouse. If you are going to compare records how did P do from 2009 until he left?LB won 10 or more games year after year. The only times they were 1 and done was when they played the eventual region champ in round one losing by 2 to Centreville and by 6 to Oakton. The played on Thanksgiving like 7 times in that span. No comparison to Doc.And we loved that man.

Under Doc in the playoffs, everyone has to admit that they have had extremely tough draws. So you cant count that against him. There is nothing you can do about who you play in the playoffs, its all blind luck.

Hopefully this year they will get a more favorable draw

Blind Luck...my A$$, it's called taking care of business in the regular season..try going 10-0 instead of 7-3 and see how those "Draws" work out for you...Unless its Strategy to try and pull a first round upset, not even the greatest Staff in VA could be so simple minded.

That and a hard playoff draw would have been difficult for any staff to do any better. We are proud of what Doc has done in building this program from what it was

West Potomac, Yorktown, Oakton, Robinson, West Springfield, South County & WTW are not exactly world beaters. Also getting SC in the first round is not exactly what one would consider to be a “tough draw” maybe if you’re Doc it is...Also it’s embarrassing that the year before the entire team, coach’s down to the players, cheerleaders, band, student body & trainers were scared to get off the bus to play at Woodbridge.

Yorktown, Robinson South County and Woodson all made the playoffs. Add Westfield and Stone Bridge, that makes it the toughest schedule in the state.
Woodson, who Lake Braddock beat handily in the regular season, had a much easier playoff draw and went to the quarterfinals. How do you explain that?

Also the most all of the Woodson players were coached by Doc and staff when they were at Woodson.

So you’re admitting all of the wins Docs had at LB were because JP coached those guys two years ago? That would make sense seeing as Doc never had a winning record before he got to take credit for Poythress’ players.

Yorktown sucks, got exposed by South Lakes and Westfield in playoffs, meaning they squeaked in its almost harder to not make playoffs, they let so many teams in. Robo is well Robo, terrible. SOCO couldn’t win any big games themselves, embarrassed by WF & CVHS & Madison. Woodson had a soft weak ass schedule too. Your district sucks, soft. And when you were matched up against a good team what happened? You got blowed the f’out! WF could’ve put 60-70 on you but Simmons doesn’t like to do that and got his back ups in early 3rd qtr. SB DID put 70 on you.

Coach Doc had very little to do with WTW success this past season which is why they went so far but he had a lot to do with LB’s failures this year which is why they are regressing.

Doc has been wonderful for these boys, he has made them competitive significant and disciplined. But most of all they are responsible for their actions and he holds them to it. If they make a mistake, as a lot of young people do, they have consequences to pay, to earn back that trust. This program is turning out young men who have character and integrity and will go far in life. They are brothers in life.

Quite a few of these boys are going to college to play football, I think that says a lot about how much Doc and this staff care about them

But in the end, "What they do on the field is not as important is what they do off the field". That is to do great things

Here’s a question for some of you who know so much, why is McLean so bad? And don’t just give me the BS line about “demographics”. They may not have the kids to go deep into the playoffs, but they schedule a lot of other teams with similar demographics. They should at least be able to win a few games every year. What gives?

They’re doing fine this year. Boys are 17-9 (just beat Oakton in Regionals) and girls are 18-6 (just beat South Lakes to win Liberty District).

You did mean basketball, right? Because if you meant football, schools that are 80% upper-middle class white/Asian aren’t going to beat many teams at football. Freshmen and JV both won some games last year, but the pool of interested kids is just not that deep.

Madison doesn’t seem to have an issue with regards to demo’s. I think that’s a crutch/excuse for poor coaching and poorly designed program starting from DSA on down. And it is true their youth level has take a huge hit, that’s on the commissioner & coach’s of MYA. Any good kids leave for VYI.

McLean had OK records at football in a not especially competitive district from fall 2009 through fall 2014 (ranging from 8-3 to 5-5). Then the program went south, just like Marshall’s did for a long stretch. The current DSA and head coach arrived after the downturn.

Vienna (Madison) has always been a more middle-class, sports-oriented community than McLean. High school kids end up coaching youth teams in McLean that dads in Vienna fight with each other to coach. And McLean also has a much larger Asian population than Vienna, and most of those folks don’t want their kids playing football. Their kids may row crew, or play tennis, soccer, or even lacrosse, but probably not football.
