The Widen of 193 and Extending Reston Parkway Through Great Falls
Posted by: Good Bye My Fairfax County ()

I just saw the plans developers have. Oh well, Great Falls and Reston were nice places in their days. The nice lakes of Reston and open fields and wooded areas for horses. Great Falls with its vast open areas.

It's about time to widen those roads. The rich folks in Great Falls have held it off for along time. Screw them Its time to share the burden

Will relieve a lot of the congestion at 193 and 7. They will have to have a third lane (minimum) and a left turn signal from 193 west on to the new Reston Parkway extension.

Also Reston Ave should extend to 193. Build up that stupid triangle corner.

Frankly they need some flyover ramps like Loudoun did for Belmont Ridge etc. on 7.

While it's a really busy route, it will cost lots to widen this. Then the rich fucks who live on 193 will see their properties depreciate, less tax revenue. All to save some rich pricks 10 minutes each way commuting?

I think the better idea is to strength the connecting roads. Get rid of that quaint and antiquated little one lane bridge on Springvale. Nobody likes that anymore.

Transurban has been involved in solving the traffic issues around the DMV for several years, and they have plans to help the commuters avoid traffic nightmares.

Apparently, you haven't been on any Fairfax county roads around rush hour. They are traffic nightmares now and traffic will be doubled over the next 5 years with exploding 10 story building development.

Let me suggest some drives(well parking lots) for you to enjoy:

1) FFX county parkway 5pm-7:30pm
2) Reston Parkway 5pm-7:30pm start by exiting from the Reston Town Center
3) Vienna 123 5pm-7:30pm
4) Tysons Corner, just about any hour now
5) 193 outbound off 495 5pm-7:30pm
6) Vienna Lawyer Rd into Reston 5pm-7:30pm
7) Rt50, just about any time, but best at Chantilly to South Riding between 5pm-7:30pm
8) Hunter Mill Rd from Reston Toward Lake Fairfax 5pm-7:30pm
9) Toll Road 5pm-7:30pm

TransUrban has only one thing they are interested in, $$$$$.

They prefer traffic to be bad so they can have more people pay for the Toll/Hot lanes.

The 10 story buildings don’t seem so bad compared to the 30 and 40 story buildings they have planned for Reston.

Actually, traffic is bad at rush hour near the Vienna Department of Motor Vehicles.

Yes, and those traffic jams from Reston have to go thru Great Falls on 193 and the new Reston Parkway Great Falls extenion.

Not to mention the new traffic from the planned "Great Falls Town Center" 10 story buildings.

The plans exist with a select group of developers and not public knowledge yet. It's not until the board can increase the Reston density cap will be the real plans be revealed by the planning supervisors and the board. One step at a time.

This county board and planning board is so corrupt! It's all about giving developers whatever they want so they can make a quick dime. No outlook to traffic congestion or infrastructure to support growth.

Just keep thinking it's fake news. It's going to happen and theirs nothing can be done to stop it and Great Falls Town Center. The developers and corrupt planning board have already decided it's going to happen. The Fairfax County board is rigged with yes votes for developers.

It's all about developers getting in quick building 20 story buildings and running with profits. Typical pump and dump developer strategy. The developers don't care if traffic is gridlock once they runaway with the profits to Boston, etc...

193 is long overdue for improvements and now that the board is going to increase traffic on 193 with density increases there is really no choice. The roads will have to be built to handle Reston traffic.

From I've heard she not going to run again because of the complaints Reston residents have against her and allowing the over development of Reston.

Especially since she tried to silence residents and sneak in a vote against residents wishes.

Whoever heard of representatives saying they don't to listen to residents anymore.

I had at one point the desire to live in great falls, solely because of the bigger lots, so I could piss off my deck and not here my neighbor fart. But those uppity pricks killed a man when they refused to cut down those barely living oak trees at the village for road improvements. It took one of those trees falling on a motorist to get those stuck up pricks to finally cut them down. But now I'm just done with this area. Traffic has gotten ridiculous with no desire to slow down the over development. Reston used to have a bowling alley, until the land owner jacked up the rent, and that lot still sits empty making exactly zero money. We used to have the carnival come to town once a year, until there was no more space avalible to put it. Reston Town Center is a joke with greedy ass Boston charging to park and driving out tenants. The traffic is damn near gridlocked at rush hour and the only solution apparently is to build more. My contract here is up in 18 months, then I'm selling for top fukin dollar cause I'm in a single family that I've realtors beating on my door for. It was a great place to grow up, back when you could sun bathe on top of the lake drains. Now it's an over congested nightmare. I'm thinking Clarksville. The place is prime with a huge lake. Should be a safe investment

You nailed it. Build more in a smaller area so the county can get more taxes to improve services? Huh????

This is the logic of "pump and dump developers" who only have one goal... Build and sell it to some other suckers in 2 years so they can deal with the mess of not enough schools, gridlocked traffic, and no greenspaces for parks with athletic fields.

Their solution is everybody will take the bus to the grocery store and kids to the soccer practice. Ever tried to get 4 kids on a bus with all the soccer stuff? Hull groceries? Home Depot stuff on the bus or Metro?

Not mention all the bus changes one has to do just to cross Reston.

Right, blame the developers.....don't bother to look at Audrey Moore's downzoning policies. They are what got Northern Va where it is today with traffic. Period.

The same shit show liberals have been in charge forever: the traffic and taxes continue to get worse and you dummies blame the developers. Please, get a fucking clue.

I didn't blame the developers. I do blame the county for allowing this crap. But, the developers are at fault too for proposing all this over development. That's why my relocation is not going to be around here. You've got to go two counties over to get away from the stupidity.

You did blame the developers, re-read what you wrote...... The wheels for this were set in motion decades ago. In fact, it all started with the riots in DC. The middle class white folks said fuck this, I'm out and moved to VA. The Supervisors stuck their heads in the sand and allowed the slow growth activists (Audrey Moore) to run the show. That is why 66 is 2 lanes inside the Beltway, it's why it took Metro 30 years to get out to the western suburbs, it's why they downzoned Fairfax County. You can't turn the clock back. Traffic was awful when I was in high school in the early 80's, you could see the problems then and nothing has been done.

Developers are trying to make a buck. They buy bulldozers (someone has to make them), they buy wood (someone has to cut it down and cut it to size), they buy steel, iron, appliances......and they employ people sometimes thousands of people and hire contract engineers, plumbers, roofers...... The people you need to have a problem with are the members of the Board of Supervisors. They put you in this spot. The developers are filling a need and people bank accounts. What are the Supervisors doing except hindering capitalism?

I blame mainly the Board of Supervisors. Second, I blame the developers who seem to be giving "special favors" to the board.

It's very simple. Build the ROAD FIRST, then let's talk about new developments.

Reston use to be a farm. Fairfax was a forest. Alexandria was the closest shopping district; or downtown. Alexandria Hospital. Alexandria doctors. Fairfax BOS were all farmers. Reston was not the beginning of the sprawal It started a long Long time ago. The more people, the more growth.

Perhaps Fairfax needs a cap on population. Get on the waiting list if you want to move here. When someone moves out, line moves up.

What if Towlston Road ran all the way through the woods into a 2-lane Toll Tunnel or bridge to connect McLean to Great Falls MD... it's a narrow part of the river. Could connect Towlston to MacCarthur Blvd. Make it a timed one-way. All of the execs/family vans living in that area would pay the toll, and it take a lot of otherwise cranky drivers off of the the Balls Hill area...

In the same parking lot as the ice rinks. The front sidewalk is still there, it's where all the mountain bikers park for the trail.

The family that owned it closed the doors when the lease was up and the land owners new lease offer was absurdly high. This was the late '80s. Today that place would be a gold mine. About once a month on Saturday night/Sunday morning, after last call and closing time a few friends were invited to stay bowl and drink until dawn, good times.

Maryland refuses to allow another bridge between the beltway and point of rocks. Virginia has been trying to talk them into a bridge at 28/7 for decades. Anything inside the beltway is too congested/difficult to acquire land for and would be unnecessary if a bridge north/west of the American Legion was built.

Looks like the board and developers are trying to extend Reston Parkway thru Great Falls and then eventually use the Madera School property for a new bridge.

Holy shit so that's what the abandoned parking lot was for. Was the building in the empty lot or was it where the skating rinks are now? I see in a 1988 aerial photo a big building.

Funny how the landlord lost the bowling alley tenant due to the rent and the site's been abandoned for decades.

The bridge will be part of the Reston Parkway expansion through Great Falls. 193 is way overloaded with all the new Reston Town Center and Reston developments. I see the telephone poles have already been moved back from 193 for the widen.

Looks like the landlord at the "Great Falls Center" is slowly getting rid of tenants so he can sell off the property for the 20 story Great Falls Town Center.

Folks calling for elevated or underground roads should have an awareness of the cost difference between ground level and above or below it.
Suggesting such is realistic it just idiocy.

How are they going widen Georgetown Pike with the sharp curves and the hilly terrain around Difficult Run and Swinks Mill Road areas? It's going to a very expensive undertaking.

I must be the only one that looks at maps and google earth. Where is this Reston parkway extension going to cross the river? In the middle of the national park or the regional park???

The problem is the Fairfax county board is allowing developers to over crowd Reston roads and those cars have to go some place. Even with the widening of 193 there still need to be other roads builts to handle all the Reston Parkway traffic exiting Reston.

The only other option is extending Reston Parkway because you're not going to stop the developers from building skyscrapers in Reston. There are already planned over 10,000 more cars a day on the Reston Parkway and the parkway is already overload.

The developers and FFX board snuck in the over development by saying everybody would use the Metro but all know that a pipe dream.

Sounds like you can beat the system then just by using Metro. Imagine that!

#1 the county isn't YOURS

#2 democrats are going to use mexicans to do the labor and the objective will be to build housing for mexicans - and you know it

#3 public complaints won't mean a thing, democrats hire police and point weapons at "people who have complaints"

#4 hopefully the people offended can make them liable for running communism against their own citizens* while they are still young enough to suffer

I think it'd a dumb plan. It will f up a beautiful residential area. There are plenty of other roads commuters can take. They probably want to a connection between RT 7 and 495 in Maryland which will bypass the Dulles Toll Rd. I will say that 193 is hilly and winding as hell and is fun to drive

The problem is the board has allowed Reston to overgrow and that traffic from Reston needs new roads to handle all cars. You're looking at over 20,000 more cars every day on the Reston parkway and those cars have to some place. That why the Reston Parkway and 193 will have be expanded.

There's no choice but connect the Reston Parkway to the land be the Maderia school and put a second bridge in. No other choice but to expand 193 to four lanes to also handle all the Reston traffic jams.

It all started with WWII.

Prior to WWII, Fairfax County was a leading milk producer in the State...and there was no Pentagon.

No Pentagon, and so, no real defense industry.

Farms.

Then, WWII, the Pentagon, and the Cold War.

Massive growth in Fairfax County. Industry brings residents.

Dulles Airport and the Toll Road in the early 80's...and, the high-tech industry.

That's it, folks.

No weird conspiracy or anything like that by supervisors, developers, etc...just an explosive growth brought on by WWII.

Could've just as well happened in South Carolina if "they" decided to locate the Pentagon and seat of the Federal Government there.

Great Falls is due to be next big area that FFX county board allows massive redevelopment. They are already planning to revamp the sewer and roads in Great Falls. In ten years Fairfax county is going to look like DC. all grid roads and skyscrapers, and paid parking lots.

The days of single dwelling houses is over in Fairfax county.

Nt that simple. At each step along the way Fairfax County had the opportunity to plan out development so that it would happen in a way that could be accommodated with minimal adverse effects. Instead the County administration made choices which favored developers and other businesses at the expense of County residents. The only solution the current leaders can come up with is more of the same.

Unfortunately it appears the county board and planning commission only do one... vote for more building with very little restrictions on the builders. The more people crammed into one area the better. Cram as many people into one area with the builder having to pay very in the way road improvements for the extra traffic, athletic fields and green spaces for kids and resident.

Fairfax county use to be beautiful. Now it becomes the ghetto of downtown DC.

What parks?

All the planning board does is bulldoze and add 1,000,000 more cars to county roads with the fantasy solution of everybody will ride the bus to kids soccer games, grocery shopping and Home Depot.

It like the planning commission has never lived outside of a huge downtown area. I haven't seen the board build any new parklands or lakes for residents to enjoy. Just high-density eyesores.

They have to build the pack'n'stacks at high density because (1) the New World Order has decreed that all populations must be moved into the cities to keep all the rural areas pristine in the near future. (Agenda 21); (2) The only way to pay for the metro out to the western areas of NOVA is to make travelling on the roads so expensive, well-tolled and basically onerous for everybody that everyone will HAVE to choose either the expense of the toll road(s) and metro trains in order to (a) get to work every day and (b) save their sanity. Expect that in the future all east west/north south main roads will be tolled and every acre of land now empty of developments will soon be bought out and turned into high rise hells. It is all in the future plans, folks. Pack'n'stack in the new buzzword of population control and manipulation.

The Fairfax County planning commission and board have lost their minds! It all about profit for developers who build, dump and run with profits before the county has to deal the nightmares.

The more people packed in an area increases government services exponentially while driving down the value of an area over time.

Destroying Reston and Great Falls is a tragedy. The worst part is the wooded and green spaces which made Fairfax County great and attractive will be gone forever.

Amen, making Fairfax county a better place is also about providing more green space, athletic fields and parks. Any county can build out of control with no planning.

Fairfax County use to be exclusive hunt club properties with lush green areas. Now everybody rich is moving out to Loudoun county and Fairfax county is becoming the ghetto of DC with traffic gridlock.

Uh huh. And Loudoun County is becoming Fairfax County. Doing the same thing and saving green space and parks even less than Fairfax did. Pretty soon NOVA is going to be paved the whole way to the Blue Ridge.

Try that several times. One time going from Reston to Herndon I had to make 5 bus changes. Took me about 1hr 20minutes to go from South Reston to Herndon and I had to walk 200 yards from the drop off.

Not to mention that it's very difficult to load all the kids up for soccer practice on a Metro bus.

Every try bring stuff home from the grocery store on the Metro? Home Depot stuff?

I am a big fan of mass transit and alternative transit, but it needs to be the correct form of transit for the community. It is unfortunate that under Republican as well as Democratic leadership County officials have allowed developers to so fuck up the County that it is damn hard to design a mass transit/alternative transit system that would work well today. Never mind that by the time it is implemented to the point where it is moderately functional things would have changed so much as to make it out of date.

Think travelling from Reston to Herndon by mass transit is hard? Try going from Annandale to Herndon...or from Beacon Hill to Tysons. Try getting to Fairfax Hospital. It doesn't work. Yet our County officials need for it to work in order to assure businesses the supply of lower cost labor they need.

You nailed it. The planning commission seems to think mass transit solves all the over-development issues but ask anybody on the board or planning commission when the last time they went out, to a soccer practice, Home Depot, or grocery shopping by mass transit?

Hell just ask them why the parking lot at the Government center is full? Better yet close the underground garage at the gov center and force all employees, the planning commission and the board to use mass transit.

It's the worse! Long trips it's so bad because you're on the buses for long periods, like going into DC, but short hops forget using any bus. Useless. You can walk directly on short trips faster than switching all the buses.

I see there is a mass exit-us of the rich leaving Great Falls before the new Great Falls Town Center and extension of the Reston Parkway. The rich can see the writing on the walls.

So a shame the Metro in Reston allowed the planning board to over build and drive down property values with traffic jams.

Looks like Loudoun will be the premier county now.

LOL

It was only a matter of time before Reston and Tyson's urban sprawl creeped into Great Falls. Sick of seeing all these "Town Centers" and massive 9 story buildings clogging roads, schools, parking areas and parks.

Vienna, Loudoun and Clarke counties are handling the urban sprawl and density the correct ways by stopping developers from packing areas with too much density. That's Loudoun County is now the richest county in the country.

It's a shame to see all the people in Great Falls dumping their houses and moving to Loudoun County.

Just more selling out by the Fairfax County board and planning commission to big pump and dump developers.

I didn't notice the poles. They plan to build a new high school at Hutchison elementary on the 4 fields.

That Blake Lane school might not even be necessary. It's about the same size as the Stevanage park authority plot behind the Reston Home Depot.

Plus the school boards won't do boundary changes and could even go busing.

What a cluster f the Reston and Great Falls are going to be. I can't blame all the rich people for selling their houses and moving out. Fairfax County has become the new ghetto of Arlington.

It's the planning commission that is really pushing all the rich residents of Fairfax county out. Fairfax county use to be nice houses, open hunting land with green fields and woods for kids. Nice tech businesses and great wooded pathways with unpolluted lakes.

Now Fairfax county is nothing but office buildings, condos and parking lots. Might as well live in downtown DC or NYC.

Loudoun County got it right. They brought in data centers and tech companies that have few employees but pay $$$ for spaces. Loudoun also has limited the density of areas and increased the green areas.

It's tough to do when you have big dollar developers paying off the planning commission. The problem is developers come in and want to pack their square acre with 50,000 people while not paying a dime for new road improvements, schools or parks. It's literally highway robbery and the Fairfax County board allows it.

They need to add to road systems first before building 30 story condo buildings with no infrastructure improvements to support the added cars and traffic.

If you think developers are going to pay for road improvements when they can simply tell the planning board "Well once the buildings are done you'll have tax dollars to do that..."

Developers are never going to pay for infrastructure improvements needed to support their properties unless it's part of the initial development plan. All developers care about is the bottom line and profit.

The concrete jungle is spreading. Wonder if they will also build water and sewer lines to all the mansions back there?

Already happening. Reston and Tyson spawl ruining Fairfax County. Welcome to downtown DC.

Same. Fairfax County use to be horse steeplechase races of the rich. Fox hunts and lush green acres of beauty. Now it's all concrete, asphalt, and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Meanwhile, pump and dump foreign builders\developer from Boston and New York run off with quick profits of soon be ghetto housing projects of H1 reject and immigrants.

Meanwhile, the board is placating some Great Falls by celebrating a 400-foot section of sidewalk that will just get torn down by when the Great Falls Town center is built by Cornerstone.

Hey, all that Reston traffic has to go some place. I noticed most of the poles are already moved back from 193. Not sure what the full plan is for the Great Falls Town Center.

I've seen plans for the Reston Pwy connecting to the new Potomac bridge by the Maderia School. It's long overdue. Reston is going to need all the roads it can get for exiting traffic. There are 1000's of more cars going to be added to Reston in the next 5 years.

I got a laugh out of that small section of sidewalk be celebrated.

If Great Falls residents think to put that sidewalk in will stop the Great Falls Town center and widening 193 they chumps.

Guess Great Falls will become the semi trucks paradise for their "sneaking through shortcut" to avoid Rt 7 and the Rt 66 tolls. No more problems with jackknifing around the hairpin turns and falling down the 100' drop offs on either side of the roads back there in the inevitable ice storms when the Mazeratis come around the curves on the wrong side of the narrow road!.

You can see where the phone poles have been moved back. I would assume the new 4 lane road will straighten out the turns around Great Falls park and off ramps.

Part of the widen plan includes a new sewage system for the new monster Great Falls Town Center. You can't build 10 story town centers without sewage.

Crazy how the FFX county board allows massive development in Fairfax county.

I don't see anything mentioned regarding plans for the GF Town Center in the BoS weekly agenda(s) or minutes.

You won't see it until it is approved. That's the way the board works these days.

The board doesn't want to hear or have any time for the public to respond or stop the buildings.

You might right. The land at old Hazelton Lab property on Leesburg Pike is now cleared for multi-million $ homes. I don't think that made it to the BoS and planning commission?
