Eleven hundred Homeless students FCPS
Posted by: Terrance Payne ()
Date: November 27, 2018 07:00PM

More than 1,100 homeless children are enrolled in FCPS; 298 of them are without a parent or guardian. As part of the mission of the Foundation for FCPS to serve our kids in need, FCPS' Homeless Liaison Office is collecting gift cards to give to our homeless or unaccompanied youth for their basic needs throughout the year. Here's how you can help:

Purchase as many gift cards, in any amount, as you would like. (Walmart, Target, and grocery story gift cards are suggested.) Be sure to mark the value on the back of the card(s).
Send gift cards to Patti Parisi, Financial Services, Gatehouse, Room 4214; Tina West, Special Services, Willow Oaks, Room 2109; or Amy Verdin, Foundation for FCPS, Gatehouse, Suite 5101.
No time to shop? Send cash or checks to The Foundation for FCPS, or donate online. The Homeless Liaison Office will do the shopping for you.
Last year, because of the kindness and generosity of FCPS employees, families, and friends, more than $7,200 in cash and gift cards was collected. We hope you'll help again this year! Please contact Patti Parisi, 571-423-3750, with questions.

Email PParisi@fcps.edu to verify this information is accurate.

These children need each and every one of us to make contributions to help feed them while schools are closed for winter break.

Unless the homeless shelters are feeding them.

Please be generous!

None of them live with Bulova or Connolly. They don't want any of them within 500 feet of their residences.

I gave up giving Christmas gifts to anonymous sources years ago. There was once a tree with paper ornaments on it. It had a child's name and what gift they'd like to receive. You would then take the paper ornament and buy the gift for the child. Basically, none of the children wanted simple toys to play with and use their imagination. Instead, they wanted Game Boys and other $150 gadgets to play with instead. I then realized how civilization was ruined and never again, give to such anonymous sources.

They've always said - charity begins at home and that couldn't be truer.

No citations because the data isn’t there. Many people that are 5th generation may be homeless temporarily. Opioid crisis; single parent families. Mental Illness such as PTSD.

I would guess that the majority are poor citizens living in Fairfax County.
US citizens can be homeless.

Issue/ concern....Are the children without parents in Foster care? Up for adoption? Or do they attend Bryant and are 18 to 21 years of age?

They are living in somebody's car. Or they find one place to crash tonight and then have to look for another place the next night. It's especially tough to be a homeless kid when it's cold outside and when school is closed and access to food is cut off.

There are van dwellers living in designated areas with their children.
These people are homeless but have running water and a van to sleep in.

Most of these "homeless" stats are bs. They define "homeless" as not having a home of your own at any point during the year. Staying with friends or family for a while? Yep, you're considered "homeless." In a $3 million house in McLean? Yep, still "homeless."

LOL! You are so incredibly full of crap! Homelessness is a transitional state. People fall into it and then climb back out again. If you had been homeless for a time back in January, that would not mean that you would still be considered homeless as of today. Stop being such a worthless stupid shit!

PS. There are actually multiple official definitions of homelessness that apply under differing circumstance. None of those comports with the crap you posted above.

Where in Fairfax County do they keep track of homeless school children?

Some students and adult parents are living in motels that are designated as short term homeless shelters. Students are transported to school by taxi cabs.

FCPS should offer employment to the homeless parents. Quit asking employees to purchase gift cards.

I do have empathy...but not an over flowing amount of money.

Go look at the guidelines for what FCPS considers homeless. It's exactly as said. FCPS does not go back and adjust for kids who no longer are homeless. It's typically reported it in the form of "N FCPS students were identified as homeless during the ____ school year" or in similar additive ways as the 1,100 number here.

That's in contrast to other county homeless programs which use more realistic definitions for what most would considered homeless and do rolling point-in-time count estimates. For January 2018 it was 987 persons. Of that number only about 30% of those were children under the age of 18. So less than 300 vs the 1,100. Virtually none were living on the streets or in tents or cars or similar situations. 39% of homeless families were in some form of transitional housing and simply not in their own home (lots of wives who have taken the kids and left and moved in with someone else or a child staying with non-parental relatives or sponsors as a common examples). 60% were being provided some form of shelter otherwise (motels, etc.). A little over 50% of the < 1,000 are families in one form or another. The remainder being about 80% single men with mental issues who fit more traditional definitions for homeless persons.

Not to say that there aren't kids in less than ideal situations who need help.
But the way it's presented greatly overstates the numbers and the nature of "homelessness" among FCPS students. We probably have more people working on various programs for the homeless here than there are actual homeless.

Interesting that they provide absolutely NO data or statistics on how many of these people are American citizens versus non-citizens - or even more specifically illegals.

Americans should be helped; immigrants should be deported immediately.

https://wamu.org/story/14/11/12/fairfax_asks_feds_for_help_on_unaccompanied_minors/

In 2014, Fairfax County got 1,100+ “unaccompanied minors” who arrived on the US southern border. They ended up in Fairfax County after dealmaking by county officials, some churches and nonprofits. Was not a publicized deal that tax-paying citizens got to vote on or voice opinions on prior to it being a done deal.

More futures voters for Bulova and Connolly! Enough kids to fill an entire school. It is entirely possible that that some of the now-homeless youth were part of that 2014 influx of parasites.

FCPS continues to enroll border orphans. Kids that were born in 2011 that have arrived from Honduras. These kids aren’t homeless tho. They are staying with foster units or family members other than Mom and Dad.

That is considered "homeless" by FCPS criteria.
