Most of these free turkeys and other essentials are going to the working poor of Arlington. The responsible parts of the community (that excludes racist assholes of course) work together to provide a bit of the bounty that many enjoy every day on one or two days per year. I have a friend that lives near that AFAC center. When parking is tight sometimes i end up parked in that general block so see the people walking by with their bags of food/waiting on the ART bus.
The OP is correct in their assessment of the percentages.
Who do you think is working at all the fast food restaurants in Arlington? Who is serving your food, cleaning your clothes, ringing you up at the grocery store?
If you don't make over $50k it is hard to pay rent AND EAT in Arlington.
I don't shame any of them for going to get free food. I would too if i was working at some food service job, only making $300 a week (remember- hours are being cut) and having to pay my $1,145 rent for my 1 bedroom apartment at Barcroft Apartments (cheapest i could find in Arlington proper with a short google search) AND feed myself/my family. That apartment requires a $41k ($19.71 per hour) salary to even APPLY. I know of no one in any low wage job who makes this serving food or what have you. Are you going to tell them to go back to school- then get mad they ask for grants for that too? Fucking bootstraps...
