Verizon Home Phone - Issues
Posted by: Stuck on Verizon ()

I have Verizon Digital Voice service at my apartment and I'm being charged for directory assistance calls that I am not making. Verizon charges $2.99 for each call and my monthly bill normally has between 3 and 20 directory assistance charges on it. I live alone and I'm absolutely not making these calls. Every month I call Verizon to complain and they usually credit me for these charges, but sometimes they won't provide a credit and it's driving me crazy.

Verizon has researched the issue and they have no clue what is triggering the charges. The problem has been going on for over two years. My Verizon plan does not have an option to block 411 calls.

I'd like to get rid of my home phone, but cell service in my area is not great. I tried Vonage and the voice quality was awful.

Can anyone recommend a solution/competitor? Thanks.

As long as you have reasonably fast internet Google voice will do whatever you need for free. I use it to manage three phone numbers, home cell and work. I can use my phone from my kindle or my chromebook or from my phone! It works great and is 100% free.

If your Vonage voice quality if awful, then likely your Internct service is crappy.

I have had Vontage for a 2nd line for over 10 years, not a problem.

All is well until you lose your power.

All "land lines" such as Verizon, nowadays are actually Internet.
There is no copper wire telephone line to anyone's house anymore.
If your Internet goes out, your phone goes with it.

That's why they give you a big battery as part of the installation.
But after it runs down, if your power is still out, your all done.

40 years ago it worked differently: phone was its own thing,
immune to power outages. Today, it's all just part of Internet,
running on the same line as the cable, and battery in your house
and a battery on the street. You've seen them: they are those
green boxes on the side of the telephone poles.

The phone company even went so far as to physically tear out the
copper wiring, because they didn't want to do real land lines anymore.

OP, you mentioned you live in an apartment. Maybe apartment maintenance people who are coming into your apartment to make repairs are making the directory assistance calls?
