"I’d like to know why there are so many ALDI locations around DC but there is only one located in DC.”

by Prince Of Petworth November 20, 2018 at 12:15 pm

“Dear PoPville,

I’d like to know why there are so many ALDI locations around DC but there is only one located in DC. Attached is a Google Maps screenshot showing the obvious (and massive) void in DC.

I swear I’m not trying to advertise for them…it’s just that ALDI is a great place to shop with really affordable prices and city living is expensive. DC’s only ALDI location is in far NE and isn’t very accessible without a car, especially when you’re trying to get home with a full load of groceries.”

Perhaps, they don't want shoplifters?

Hard to keep your prices low when everyone has to eat the cost of the five-finger discount...

Also one of the reasons why COSTCO has a membership fee. They claim that members steal less. Although I was in the one in Fairfax 9-10 months ago and someone managed to remove the security cable and make off with a laptop. It was around 3 PM. Zoom.........straight out the door he went.

Managers were left perplexed.

The five-finger discount issue on the east side is probably the problem, along with all the other crime. You are now called a racist if you pursue thieves who just happen to not be white.

As far as the other areas, like NW, it could be the high rent driving them away. They also tend to place their stores in areas with higher traffic and they also want a good parking situation. However, they do have some NYC stores.

Instacart is available for Aldi. But, it will wipe out your savings.

Aldi is a great store but it has limitations.

Aldi is a dump. Grocery shopping for people who can't afford REAL grocery shopping.

Aldi takes some getting used to. I can afford to shop anywhere but rather than set my money on fire I do 90% of my shopping there.

Why put a store in an area where the employees steal, the "customers" steal.

Any merchandise that is not stolen is usually damaged so it cannot be sold.

Real facts are not racist.

I've maxed out my retirement accounts for the last 20 years, have 2 paid off home and still shop at Aldi. The brands are the same you would see at Giant like Foxy and Dole. You actually see a lot of the same stuff at Trader Joes as well.

Agreed. Diet is not the right place to try to skimp. Only those who have no choice in the matter should fall to such levels. Went to an Aldi once to see what it was all about. Bought nothing and never went back.

You realize that with interest rates as low as they have been recently, paying off a home mortgage was likely not such a smart thing to do.

Many of the items Aldi sells are Kosher, and are a higher quality than can be found at Giant or Safeway.

I am not foolish enough to be a religious nut, I simply try to eat a safe and balanced diet. On my one visit to Aldi, it did nothing to inspire any sort of confidence at all.

Your're just too much of a fat ass to bag your own groceries and put your cart back. The food part is all the same, it's the other things that Aldi does differently.

OR..............most of DC does not fit our business model. That's what a polite German would say.

Try going a second time. My first impression was negative, then I started comparing products and prices. The lightbulb went on. Felt like I had been taken to the cleaners over the years. I am part of the Aldi cult now.

Goto suitland.
Goto silver hill.
Koons complain about “food deserts” in their hood yet do nothing when a small shop gets robbed.
There’s a shitty giant food in Brentwood DC area that is scary during daylight hours. niglets loitering at all hours etc. weed smoke everywhere.

And it ain’t cause white people either.
Would u locate to negroland and get robbed once a week by people in your own city?
Yeah, thought so!

It’s got to be a tax write off. Do they accept food stamps and rampant theft normally?

News flash: Germany (country of Aldi/Trader Joe's) is first world. Aldi and Trader Joe's products are mostly their own brands, but they are high quality. Whole Foods is the same way. By the way there are 3 Trader Joe's in DC, which brings the total Aldi family count up to 4 stores. Germans are smart enough to know the places to avoid.
