A Dunkin’ Donuts owner called the police on a customer after arguing over the company’s free Wifi policy.

On Facebook, Tirza Wilbon White, PhD, posted her recorded conversation with franchise owner Christina Cabral at Dunkin’ Donuts in Fairfax, Virginia, on Nov. 7, minutes after arriving at the store. White had frequented the store for the past two years, purchasing coffee and working on her laptop while using the company’s free Wifi service.

“I had just sat down when a woman I had never seen before walked up and asked, ‘Are you going to buy coffee?'” White, 46, a former assistant professor at the University of Maryland and mother-of-two, tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “I told her I planned on buying coffee after I got settled, but not if it were mandated.”

According to White, the woman, who identified herself as a “quality control” official, gestured toward another black customer, saying that he had purchased food before using Wifi. White responded by asking Cabral if a nearby white customer was held to the same standard, and Cabral ordered that she purchase coffee or leave.

When Cabral walked away, an employee informed White that she was, in fact, the owner. So White, sensing that discrimination was at play, approached Cabral to clarify the policy.

In one of three separate videos White posted to Facebook, Cabral says, “I get to make my own rules…I need to ensure safety to my customers.” She also cited previous customers who caused trouble without making purchases. “It’s nothing against you,” she says. “We’re just trying to make our customers feel safe.”

In both cases, the owner's actions were wrong. But you can't defend one and not the other.

The franchisee is in the business of selling donuts and coffee and supporting her family. She doesn't provide tables and Wifi so a bunch of sweaty junkies can come stink up the place for hours at a time. Tables and Wifi are for PAYING CUSTOMERS.

I think people out here in the 'burbs need to experience city life in DC a bit more. Where’s the racism? A lady entered a business, didn’t buy shit and harassed customers and the manager.

The 'manager' set upon a regular black customer minutes after her arrival. That customer indicated in response that just like always, she did intend to purchase coffee as soon as she was settled.

The manager was way out of line. She should have fired herself.

This manager is obviously smart, well trained and strictly enforcing policy. I hope DD will do the right thing, offer this manager counseling for the public witch trial she’s going on, and probably offer her a bonus or promotion. Dunkin Donuts should never have issued an apology as none was needed. If the manager had made her go to the colored window to pick up her food, that would have been racist. Yes Dr White should absolutely apologize to a hard working employee. That’s the bottom line. There’s nothing racist here, at best it’s someone pilfering internet/taking up space for a paying customer. That location is rather busy and due to the shady location, the manager is simply requesting no loitering.

Dr White has not only watered down racism, she’s responsible for making a scene when none was needed. She could have simply bought a donut and coffee like everyone else or left being ashamed to be loitering. She certainly did not impress me in any way, and this making the news, must have been a slow week.

And my heart goes out to the hard working DD manager, who probably didn’t get an affirmative action scholarship, nor have the same opportunities as a lady who thinks it’s proper to loiter and paint an inaccurate picture. DD refers to Dr. White as a customer, but the very nature of the issue declares that she was not. Apologizing to this person makes a mockery of common sense and good and honest people. No one enters a restaurant and occupies a seat without the intention of buying something. A person would be ignorant to do so. Confusing this matter with an apology from the establishment is insulting to honest people everywhere.

A local news station sent a WHITE intern to the Fairfax Dunkin Donuts store. He sat for more than 20 minutes using the free WiFi without ordering anything. Nothing happened. Dr. White was hassled before she'd had enough time to set her things down. This was plain old RACISM, and DD Corporate owed Dr. White a lot more than just an apology.

I dislike every SOB at Starbucks or Panera taking up space using it as an office.
They buy coffee and stay there 4+ hours. I would say a cutoff to a minute

I believe you, which begs the question: why did Dr White immediately conclude any problem was due to the color of her skin? The employee clearly explained the issue. Could the “doctor” not understand what the employee told her?

This situation smells of staged drama to disrupt and provoke division amongst fellow citizens. Nothing good can come from endorsing lawlessness.

DD should be ashamed for not standing by their employee who was only trying to protect DD’s interest.

In fact, if you think about it, the employee’s actions declare her unbias in that she was treating Dr. White like everyone else.
