I'm not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing that there is very little going on right now. Are people really that law abiding, that good at not getting caught, or are the police just chillin

lol. Some dude is hiding in the bushes and someone else locked themselves in the bedroom.

This owns.

In a morbid way, I kind of wish I'd been able to listen to the scanner the day of the shooting at the Chantilly police station.

Robbery in Culmore shopping center.

See, I have a feeling this thing wil repeat itself a lot.

Edit: Awesome! The cops are chasing the guys on foot and you can hear one guy huffing and puffing into his radio to give his twenty, and confirm that one of the robbers has a gun.

It's not working for me, or else nothing is going on. It says this:
[13:29:37] Connecting to boris.serveirc.com
[13:29:38] Connected to server Fairfax Scanner
[13:29:38] Welcome to Fairfax Scanner
[13:29:38] This channel uses an unsupported codec:
[13:29:38] GSM 16.4 Kbit

Any ideas?

What version of Teamspeak are you using? I installed RC2 (without the updated executable) and that was all I had to do. During installation there was a prompt stating that a check would be performed for the necessary codecs and if they were missing, they would be installed.

If you didn't just install, then you may want to check the goteamspeak site or see if the Teamspeak software has an option to update itself.

Also, search on google for the codec "GSM 16.4 Kbit"

Here's a tip for those of you who think you see a townhouse on fire.

Check to make sure it isn't the damn DRYER VENT that is releasing HOT AIR before calling the Fire Department. I just heard a call for a townhouse fire. A few moments later one of the firemen called over the radio that it was just the dryer vent.

Excellent! This is incredible.

I'm about to shoot the maintainer an email and offer to host a 'mirror' of the feed so we don't suck down all of his bandwidth.

I'll also look into a real-time conversion of the 'TeamSpeak' stream into something more universally accessible like a SHOUTcast feed that can be played with Winamp or iTunes.

One of the reasons you dont here all the real good police stuff is, FFX Co uses there in car CAD/computers to send dispatch info ..

Fortunatly , FFX FD still dispatches over the air.

Does anyone know where to find a map of the Box codes.. ie engine 421 box 18 ..etc..etc..

hearing cops giving position to each other during a foot chase, hearing the huffing and puffing and the dog barking in the background... I heard two cops chasing two guys on foot for over three hours last night after there was a robbery. I thought that was "real good".

Sorry , I was being a little sarcastic.. but yeah your right..
When FFX used to be on the 900 mhz radios you would here everything including the responses back from plate requests and stuff like that.. You would also here peoples names and police records read over the air.. it was pretty funny.

This site is really good though, Has anyone contacted the owner yet?

I heard them read off names and addresses today. I haven't heard them read police records, but I've heard them refer to specific people as "known gang members", "drug dealers", etc. Great stuff.

How can they stop people from listening to a public broadcast?

Using the information you hear to assist in evading the police or committing a crime is illegal. Obviously.

With all the posts on this board that are anti-police, it is surprising to see how excited you all get while listening to police dispatch. Kinda makes the donut jokes and trigger-happy comments make you feel like a tool, I guess.

Is there an open tag somewhere? In Safari, the bottom half (below Cary's second post) of the posts are showing up with a strikethrough. Seems fine in Internet Explorer 6 and Firefox on my PC though...

Edit: Nevermind, as soon as I posted, the strikethrough went away.

It sounds like the recording starts after the shooting is resolved. Didn't it start at like 1PM or something? This recording starts at 5PM.

Maps aren't available online for viewing. If you don't know, the beginning of the box number is the station that responds to that location 'first due'. You can think of a box as the size of a very small neighborhood or a large street block. So if you hear something like engine 421 respond to box 18-01, that means that the engine from station 21 (Fair Oaks) responds to that location; that location should be serviced by station 18 (Jefferson station on route 50)

Hi Guys,
I'm the owner of the scanner feed. I'm glad everybody seems to be enjoying it !
I have expanded coverage into Loudoun and Prince William and also Dulles Airport Police. However, priority is given to FFX activities so if something big is happening the other services will get disabled in favor of FFX. If you have any questions or comments please email me. You can find my email on the scanner site.

I also plan to put up an air traffic control channel (completely separate from the public services channel for those people interested in monitoring traffic in and out of Dulles)

BTW you can get a nice map of the county with the "Box" numbers from the Fairfax County Government.

What is the difference between a "scout" and a "motor?" Is a scout a pickup truck?

Sure...

1. Download the Teamspeak Client version 2.0.32.60 from http://www.goteamspeak.com/index.php?page=downloads

2. Install the client on your windows machine by double clicking on the file you downloaded. Go through the normal accept license stuff with the installer.

3. At the end of the installation it will ask you whether you want to load the codecs. Make sure you click yes. That will complete the installation.

4. You should now have an icon on your desktop that says Teamspeak 2 RC2. Click this to start the program.

5. Go to the first menu item that says "Connection" and click on connect (the first menu item)

6. This will bring up a connection dialog. The first time through you will need to "add" a server by right clicking on the left hand side of the dialog box where it says servers (actually right click on the item just underneath servers). This will allow you to give the server a name. You can call it anything you want.

7. Now on the right hand side of the connection dialog fill in the following fields:

Server Address: boris.serveirc.com
Nickname: a name of your choosing

Underneath Nickname you will see a radio button that says anonymous. Click on that.

8. At the bottom hit the button that says Connect.

9. You are done. You should now be connected to the server. Make sure your volume control is set and that the sound on your computer is not muted.

Happy Listening and welcome to the scanner !

I'm glad everyone enjoys the scanner feed - there was a question about unit designators - here's a little clarification on some of the Fairfax Co. radio system:

-General Stuff
--Police Service Areas
The entire county is devided into Police Service Areas, or PSAs. These areas are identified by a 3 digit number.
The first digit of the area corresponds to the station:

1-Sully
2-Mt. Vernon
3-McLean
4-Mason
5-Reston
6-Franconia
7-West Springfield
8-Fair Oaks

The last 2 digits correspond to the specific area.

-Unit Designators

--Patrol Units
Patrol units are identified by "Scout" and 3 digit number and a letter - 800A 342C
The numbers correspond to the area they work, and the letter corresponds to the shift assigned.
Double units (2 fully trained officers - not used for a training officer) replace the last number with a 9
Units assigned the wagon replace the last number with an 8
(A-Midnighs, B-Daywork, C-Evenings).
Ex - 411B is a daywork unit assigned to area 411 (Culmore SC area)

-- 9xx units
The most senior officers (Usually the MPOs) on normal patrol shift are assigned 9xx designators. The first number
after 9 is the station assigned. The second number starts at 0 and goes up for every 9xx unit.
Ex - 941A - 2nd Midnight unit assigned to all of Mason station

--Set & X-Ray Units
These units are identified by Set or X-Ray and a two digit number. Generally they are units on a special assignment, such as traffic patrol in a specific area, stakeouts, etc.

--Overtime Units
These units are identified by Z and a three digit number - the first digit being the station assigned, and the
other numbers correspond to the overtime work location
Ex - Z835 - A Fair Oaks unit working the overtime location assigned the number 35

--Patrol Supervisors
These units are Luitnenants and Seargents assigned to normal patrol - These units are identified
by "Car" and a two or one digit number (two for seargents, one for Luitentants). The first digit (or only digit
for Liutentants) corresponds to the station assigned.

Ex - Car 10A - Seargent assigned to Sully Station midnight shift
Ex - Car 2C - Liutentant assigned to Mt. Vernon evening shift

--Duty Officer
This is highest ranking officer assigned to patrol - there is always a duty officer on duty, and is always
notified of major police events countywide.
They are identified by "Duty Officer" and then a 1 digit number starting at 1 (duty officers are each assigned
designator numbers)

Ex - Duty Officer 1 - A duty officer

--K9 Units
These are units assigned to street patrol who have a dog with them. They are identified as "K9" and a two digit
number starting at 1. K901 is the Liutenent and K902 is the Seargent. Each of these units are assigned 2 dogs -
one for general law enforcement use (drug searches, etc) and the other is a bloodhound for searches.

Note: a few patrol units also have dogs - both general law enforcement trained, and bomb dogs - they are not identified
by the K9 designator - they use normal patrol designators.

--Motor Units
These are units who are assigned to the motor squad - these include the motorcycle team, and officers who drive
special vehicles like the Cameros, and civilian vehciles.
They are identified by "Motor" and a two digit number

I've been listening to Fairfax PD & FD for a couple years now & I used to volunteer with the department.

If you find this scanner link interesting, and you have $500 laying around, get a digital scanner - I have a Uniden BCD-396T - it's a f'ing awesome scanner - if you want to listen to Fairfax, or just about any local jurisdiction, you'll need a digital scanner - and all them cost around $500+.

If you want more info on the Fairfax radio system, check out radioreference.com - the forums are a great place to get any questions answered, and myself and a few other people will often post info about any major incidents here - http://www.radioreference.com/forums/showthread.php?goto=lastpost&t=46704

We are using a BCD996T scanner for the site. It is Uniden's current top of the line digital trunk tracking scanner. It isn't the most user friendly beast to set up, but there are third parties that sell programs that make the set up alot easier. I use one from Butel. I also subscribe to radioreference.com so that I can pull down the changes to the systems I scan (they can change quite frequently) over the internet and then program them into the scanner.

A second scanner is planned for the site to cover aircraft traffic at Dulles. Since this traffic isn't digital and isn't trunked I can use an earlier generation (but still good) scanner for this purpose. I should have this available shortly depending on what I can find on the used market.

Keep us posted! If the smoke gets bad, I've heard wet towels around your head helps. Stay online as long as you can...but when the flames engulf your computer, it's OK to bail.

Yes, normally throughout most of the day - but as a minimum 9am - Midnight I have FFX only. So, no Dulles, no PWC, no Loudoun. If most of the people listening would prefer that I keep FFX up only - 24/7 then let me know. I have no problem doing that.

Actually, I have been receiving feedback from some of the listeners. It seems that the majority prefer to listen to FFX PD/FD only. So, for now I intend to leave it in that mode unless an incident occurs that crosses jurisdictions. Then, I can temporarily include that traffic so that we can follow the chase.

First of all thanks for the scanner! Awesome!

Personally I would like 24/7. Being an old scanner(BC3000XLT Bearcat) listener before the County went digital, it always seemed that the good stuff usually happened 10-3am. I am assuming you have added the three Chopter channels?

Just the PD and FD would be good. It's a little confusing having all the County channels going at once with the PD and FD. One second the Police are talking and then the next thing I hear is about somebody trying to pull some cables at a County building?

Is there some way with Teamspeak that we could turn off certain channels if we don't want to hear them?

Why is it that people who use the term “losers” have no friends? Discuss amongst yourself…

This post goes out all the stupid posters in the forum. You know who your are… or maybe you don’t know who your are..? LOL

Happy Birthday T\Gravis! You are now one year older. Thanks for sticking me the herpes lip girl. It took her 30 minutes to draw me a map of where she dances. Very entertaining. All had to do was say “Is there a bank on the corner here?” Three bar napkins later… I finally had to say, “Give me the name of place and I’ll use mapquest to find it!” Her response… “Map what?”

So, to answer a few comments:

1. The PD/FD scan is now FFX only. I agree that having other counties in the scan is very confusing and it also detracts from the FFX scan because of the scanning time involved.

2. The nature of scanning is that you have to be able to follow things in parallel as the scan cycles through the various active channels. However, if I am by the scanner and listening then I can manually halt the scan if an interesting incident develops on a particular channel. I normally do this.

3. Teamspeak has no knowledge of what the scanner is doing. So, there are no controls within Teamspeak to selectively filter out traffic. It simply takes the input audio from the scanner and streams it out on separate user connections.

4. Despite the shortcomings of the way the setup operates unless you are willing to invest in a high-end scanner, programming software, and a good antenna this is as good as it gets.

5. I will continue to improve things as time goes on. I already have a usable Dulles ATC channel completely separate from the FFX scan. So, if you want to hear aircraft in and out of Dulles give it a try. I will continue to improve reception on this channel, but keep in mind it is AM, so it carries a bit more noise on the channel than you get on FM or digital as the PD/FD use.

antenna...what kind of input for an anttena does the scanner have? YOu can make one on the cheap with a few coathangers.

Also, there are some new ones out that plug into any building's electrical system, so every wire int eh building makes up the antenna. Not sure how much they cost, though.

I'm sure you can make an antenna from a few coat hangers.

Somehow, I don't think this will perform nearly as well as the large discone I have mounted in my attic to provide clear coverage over the wide frequency band needed for effective scanning in the 150 MHZ - 875 MHZ range.

Hi Terry,

Thanks very much for the online scanner. I have installed it in my office and at other friends locations. Folks find it very interesting. In fact one friend of mine called his significant other on the cell phone when he heard her info being called in for a traffice stop. It was pretty funny, because the fiancee told the cop on tbe call her friends were laughing there butts off. It made him laugh and she was let off with a warning.

Keep up the good work,

Rick

It is possible to set up a chat channel but that would mean switching from the pd/fd channel to the chat channel, probably not ideal. The one thing I was thinking of is to set up a website where users would be able to notify other users (probably using an RSS feed) if something interesting is going on. That way people could jump on the channel to hear the action.

To terrysb: You don't know how much I appreciate you providing this scanner feed to those of us that want to hear what is going on in FFX. I like listening to it to hear some professional dispatching rather than the redneck crap I hear around here. I am originally from FFX Co (Falls Church area), but now live in eastern NC. It's nice to be able to listen to what's going on back home as I miss living there. I am seriously considering having our dispatchers to listen to some REAL radio traffic in hopes they can become more professional. Again terrysb, I for one REALLY appreciate the time and effort you have gone through to provide this feed !!!

The FFX channels have not changed since June 2007 and the scanner has been set to exactly the same channels as always. It is possible that FFX has modified their procedures knowing that their scanner traffic is online by using their data terminals more for certain types of dispatches. However, I personally have not noticed any difference in the traffic over the FFX channels. I still hear tactical radio traffic during pursuits and ground to chopper traffic, etc. It could be that during the times you are listening activities are at a lull.
