Exactly. Thats why I moved out to the hills a few years back. We live very comfortably on less than 1000 bucks a month groceries included. Having a positive cash flow in retirement is sweet.

Actually, the proponents said they if the meals tax passed, the County may look to reduce the property taxes. There was no guarantee. Face it, the County wants more taxes (revenue) to support its growing bureaucracy.

Taxpayers voted it down because they want the County to be more efficient in their budget. County employees support the measure because it grows the bureaucracy.

The final level of revenue needed to support a year's worth of the County's critical programs and services is a separate matter. The importance of having more diverse revenue sources is meanwhile indisputable. It is further clear that had the Board suddenly had an additional nearly $100 million worth of funding to work with, there would certainly have been some impact on millage rates.

This is true, but the state only allows towns and cities to simply enact a meals tax, and nearly all of them have. Counties have to go through a referendum process where manipulated stupid shits have the same voice as those who actually understand what's going on.

Taxes are low enough in this area that people with any actual money at all barely notice them. Taxes simply have no effect on your lifestyle at that level. As the result, it's a dead give-away that tax-whiners are all from the lower-income strata, and of course, have only their lazy-ass selves to blame for it.

What we need is a diverse revenue base that funds the top-notch levels of public services that we all enjoy, and that help attract more high-level, high-income workers to the area who can help with picking up the tab.

Conveniently, a meals tax would do exactly that.

Yeah, a six-figure income would be at least close to the level where taxes don't actually matter anymore (except to low-grade whiners.) But the larger point is that a meals tax would put an extra $100 million or so on the table, an amount which would act to reduce strains on property raxes by that amount. And a good chunk of it would come from people who live outside the county.

County resident pitch in to help Vienna, Herndon, Falls Church City, Fairfax City, Arlington, and the cities of Alexandria, Manassas, and Manassas Park whenever we eat out there. Why shouldn't those folks do the same when they dine here?

Not knowing the law is just another sign of how ignorant the anti-tax reactionaries are. The larger point of course is that Fairfax County is simply shooting itself in the foot here, forcing County residents to pay what non-residents ought to be picking up the tab for.

As a Fairfax County employee and pension plan future recipient, PLEASE implement the meals plan to ensure our annual raises, benefits, and pensions are fully funded and improved.

Fairfax County has been too cheap for too long and desperately needs reasonable revenue. An extra 4% on food to eat isn't too much to ask. Raising the County electricity, natural gas, cable TV, and general sales taxes would go a long way too.

The County should also investigate raising the property taxes and auto/personal property tax rates for 2019.

The property tax raise in 2018 was pretty small for most residents, a few hundred bucks is nothing when you look at the big picture and the professional employees of Fairfax County who work hard every workday.

A planned vote on a texting surcharge, a tax for texts, will not go forward in January as planned, the California Public Utilities Commission announced late Friday. The reason: not because it was a bad idea, but because the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) made a ruling on Wednesday (Dec 12) which would've made the tax unlikely to pass legal muster.

A meals tax would raise on the order of $100 million in annual revenues that we don't currently have. While only absurdly stupid people would demand a dollar-for-dollar reduction in property taxes, a reduction in pressure to raise property taxes year after year would be plainly apparent.

You want to believe you lost because of the stupidity of fairfax voters. You lost because of the stupidity of your own campaign.

For six months a small number of us with little funding and not much organization worked hard to convince voters, almost on an individual by individual basis, why they should not vote for the meals tax. We did this without having to mislead anyone. Frequently we did this using the County's own information and arguments against them. By Election Day the momentum was clearly on our side. People who in April could not believe I opposed the Meals Tax in October were telling their friends why they should vote against it. If we had another month the loss margin would have been greater.

Rage all you like. I am proud of our work. We did our job informing the electorate on why they should vote against the meals tax. Your side didn't do its job of convincing those same voters why they should. The reason you lost isn't stupid voters. The reason is staring back at you when you look in the mirror.

Have to laugh at the grass-roots pretensions. The “Anti” campaign was carried on the backs of restaurant lobby groups and their millions of dollars. This even though there is little evidence to show that a meals tax ends up hammering demand any more than increases in the minimum wage or lettuce prices.

Sometimes it is the Need for spending that drives the need for revenue. Other times it is simply the Desire for spending that creates the need for revenue. In the case of FCPS the latter is more the driving force than the former.

However even accepting that there is a need for more revenue than the current conditions in Fairfax will produce, that does not mean the meals tax is the appropriate vehicle to raise that additional revenue. If it is so important to raise additional revenue then raise the real estate tax rate. Raise business license rates. Raise the rates charged for county provided low income housing. This could all be done without creating a new tax to impose.

Fairfax County is a national leader in per-capita income. We can keep our taxes low by attracting more high-income work and people, but we have to be able to spend at least the money that it takes to accomplish that. Anti-tax right-wing dopes and stooges are just too dull to catch on to any of that.

Wrong. Your opponents are not simply anti tax anti immigrant zealots. An analyses of the results of the meals tax vote in 2016 should have disposed of that myth. This is a fight over how we raise money and how we spend it in the post real estate bubble era when the County can no longer rely on easy revenue expansions like what we saw between 2001 and 2007. With Fairfax Government now it isn't spend more money today so we can make more tomorrow. It is spend more money today so we can spend even more money tomorrow. That is a luxury we could afford when we had rapidly expanding tax flows. It is not one we can afford today.

Both your logic snd your history are worse than just extremely flawed. You personally may be in a bad way, but County demographics are strong and if we want them to stay that way, we need to attract more of the best and brightest to our area. Those are the guys and gals who can carry some tax burden for us.

Fund the wall with the meals tax. Two birds - one stone.

Conservatards think all taxes are bad, that's just the way they are. Never take a conservative seriously. They are on a 4th to 5th grade level at best.

Most Fairfax county voters are just too ignorant to vote in favor of the meals tax that we so desperately need. I wrote a letter to Governor Northam urging him to find a way to change the laws that requires citizens to approve the meals tax.

How about some roundabouts that collect a toll when you drive through them?

Like that useless roundabout on Hunter Mill Road? Give me one good reason why they built that piece of shit. The intersecting street has about 20 houses on it and I have never, ever seen anyone enter the roundabout from that street.

It's to slow drivers down on Hunter Mill to let the people get out. There are several libtard snowflakes that live in there that complained to the county that people drive too fast on Hunter Mill and they almost wrecked their Prius when pulling out. Since the county can't be bothered to enforce speed limits, the answer was to just throw up some concrete that forced everyone to slow down or you fuck your car up.

Remember in school when the one fuckup kid was running in the hall? In the old days you dealt with that kid. Today, we don't. We provide a "friendly reminder" to EVERYONE and send a note home to ALL PARENTS reminding them that running isn't allowed, while never saying shit to the kid because we don't want to hurt his feelings. Welcome to libtard central - where we fuck the many because of a few.

Even if we accepted the proposition that Fairfax needed additional revenue, that doesn't mean that a meals tax is the appropriate way to raise that revenue. This was all hashed out in the debate over the meals tax when it was last on the ballot.

Also we already do have a tax on meals. It just isn't called a meals tax. Ready to eat foods purchased from grocery stores are subject to the same sales tax as other groceries. Meals purchased at restaurants are subject to the same sales tax as sales of other goods, including the Northern Virginia transportation surcharge.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Unfortunately, that concrete roundabout cost the taxpayers millions and it inconveniences thousands of people per day. Taking a right turn from that street onto Hunter Mill has never been difficult. I can see that turning left could be a problem, but the alternative would be for people to turn right, then turn around in the mall parking lot. But those a-holes are too busy for that, so the county decided to spend millions of dollars so these people could take left turns.

What a joke.

Roundabouts are not an Oakton snowflake thing. They are not a Fairfax County Government thing. 90% of the blame goes to VDOT. You know the same fine people who turned over state owned land so that investors could build toll roads on the Beltway, I-95 and now I-66, along with other recent fiascos. These people need to justify their jobs in an era when northern Virginia transportation money is going to money losing mass transit operations. Dropping roundabouts at random locations is as good a way to do that as any.

Change Fairfax's and Arlington's govt to a city and the city council can pass meals taxes as long as the mayor signs it

What the F is the problem here the rest of Virginia has already done it "City of Lexington" RED Henner's and the #1 mist populated as large as the 10th largest US city Fairfax County is still a county sending millions to Richmond for the state to spend elsewhere

Hotel taxes dry leaning tax meals tax, cab tax lots of thing's cities keep so put your tax wishes in your mouth Dems as you let so much go south that could be spent in Fairfax
