When will we get another chance to vote for a much needed meals tax in Fairfax county?

I think by now most people realize it was a huge mistake to vote down the meals tax last time.

Trained douchebags can be hard to deprogram. The need for more diverse revenue streams hasn't gone anywhere though, so as meals tax nay-sayers are now coming to lament, the Board is looking at other means of accomplishing that same end. The stooges don't realize that this was all their own doing. Bunch of freaking dummies!

Seems like everyone is going to vote for Wexton. The great thing about the meals tax is that half of it would have come from non-county residents. We need the meals tax desperately.

Revenue available to counties in Virginia is mostly from real estate and property taxes. In Fairfax, that is about 80 percent of what we have available to provide county services. The one opportunity we have to increase and diversify our revenue sources would be to implement a meals tax. This would bring us in line with the cities of Fairfax, Falls Church, Alexandria, Manassas, Manassas Park and the District, Arlington County, and the towns of Leesburg, Middleburg, Herndon and Vienna. Unlike cities and towns, counties in Virginia may adopt a meals tax only if approved by the voters. Without the meals tax other forms of taxation simply have to be increased.

Not half actually, but on the order of 25% of revenues would have come from non residents -- commuters, tourists, and business travellers mostly. Now all that revenue has to come from those of us who live in the County instead. Ouch! How dumb was that? A meals tax would also have hit hardest on those wealthy locals who can afford to dine out often and at expensive places. Maybe that's why so many fat cats were against it? Either way, it was a big mistake to vote the meals tax down. Fairfax County is about the only area jurisdiction that doesn't have a meals tax, so we support everywhere else when we eat out there, but those folks never have to pay us back. Makes no sense.

Revenue diversification is great. When over 50% of the money from the new revenue source is coming from the same source as over 50% of the existing revenue, you do not have revenue diversification. The County was never in a position to show how much of that tax revenue was coming from nonresidents who were not already paying taxes to the County because they never did a proper study to generate this information. They instead made up a figure based on information obtained from a study done for different purposes. Plus the meals tax was intended to increase revenues, not simply diversify them.

A great idea- since it is a regressive tax, the poor and minorities will be hit the hardest. since they frequent fast food more often then the elite, it is hurt the most. pretty soon they wont be able to live in Fairfax county...its almost like thats the plan.

The way I understand it hotels that serve breakfast would have to chip in on that meals tax too. That puts a big chunk of the revenue on tourists and business travellers. Not having the meals tax costs Fairfax county millions in lost revenue from sources outside the area.

With the pending demolition of the Wolf Trap and Tequila Grande, they have decided the revenue generated by the meals tax would be negligable and not worth the effort. Furthermore, Rolling Thunder will no longer be held as the organizers have learned of the demise of the Wolf Trap. "The Wolf Trap was integral to the success of Rolling Thunder year after year. Many important decisions were made while waiting at the crosswalk at Nutely and Maple to go get beer and snacks at 7-11" said Rolling Thunder spokesman Sergeant Fourth Class Lee (USA, Ret.).

Turn all the illegals over to the ICE and we won't need to increase taxes or create new ones.

The problem with the meals tax is how they sold it, they said property taxes would go DOWN. We all know that's a lie. If FXco had extra tax revenue, they would find a way to spend it. That's what you call tax and spend liberalism.

The majority of us here in NoVa have both healthy teeth and healthy incomes. We fully understand that we enjoy low-tax living in this area. The packs of backwater goober assholes that we haven't managed to stamp out yet are over-represented on this site.

That's wrong. Pro-tax groups pointed out that passing the meals tax would increase County revenues by almost $100 million, thereby reducing pressure on the Board to raise property tax rates.

That fact that you completely misunderstood what was being said is on YOU, and nobody else, you pathetic stupid shit!

Nothing is stopping anyone from paying more in tax than they owe. If you want to pay more, simply send a check to the County. That will show your commitment. Whining of FFXU does not demonstrate commitment.

Those who support a new tax are simply saying they want their neighbors to pay under threat of prison.

Nice people.

You are saying that you are a tax cheat? Sure sounds like it.

Meanwhile, the costs of County services increase each year with inflation and population increases. Revenue needs to expand each year simply to keep up. The meals tax offered a chance to pass some of those cost increases off onto non-residents who venture into and enjoy the County at our expense. BUt you assholes voted that down. How simply stupid of you.

Obviously, despite your so called "superior" education, you can't read English. He doesn't say anywhere he cheats on his taxes or doesn't pay. You're just one of these typical programmed DNC NPCs who's programmed to like paying taxes and is programmed to believe anyone who doesn't like paying taxes is obviously a tax cheat. If you like paying taxes, move to MoCo. You'd be much happier there. Everybody there likes paying taxes.

Why would the Board of Supervisors reduce taxes on real estate?

Do you really believe this is a low tax jurisdiction? What source are you using? Are you taking account of the very high cost of living?

What does the BOS need more money for?

It's no wonder that Fairfax can't attract more people to work and live here - it's not competitive, or attractive, or responsible with spending - see County Demographic report for data on population stagnation in FFX).

No, I'm just far better educated and much more experienced than you are. Tax cheats abound among right-wingers, and espcieally among those right-wingers who claim to run small businesses.

No, they don't. But the sensible ones -- a group that you would not likely have much familiarity with -- understand that public goods and services are a necessity to any sort of quality of life, and that taxes are the means of bringing those public goods and services into existence. It seems that you are simply too stupid to understand that much without a whole lot of help.

There's nothing even in any context that implies he's cheating on his taxes. Simple Simon. You just tried to read it into what he wrote even though it's not there and there's no hint of it, either. Just because people complain about taxes doesn't mean they don't pay them. You liberals have made all kinds of efforts to make us like paying taxes, since merely doing what you say isn't enough for you, we have to like it, too. No thoughts of our own, we have to think like the Democrats tell us to think.

No, NPC, you're programmed and indoctrinated and I'm not. The only thing you have more experience with is being programmed and that's b/c I won't allow myself to be programmed. If you think only right wingers cheat on their taxes, it proves you're a programmed DNC NPC. Sharpton is just one example of a leftie who cheats on his taxes. There are more. Sharpton is a darling of the DNC, so nobody on your side mentions him. It's typical of your kinds hypocrisy.

Yes they do, why do you think they have so many taxes in MoCo? Spendthrift Simpletons and dissolute shit for brains like you don't understand what sensible people already know which is the gov't is supposed to live within its means and not give away the people's money to themselves, their cronies and other undeserving groups that vote for them. DC has all these taxes and is the most corrupt, inefficient gov't in this area and its run by liberals like you.

What a fucking moronic retard. There's a reason people in the know call you "libtards".

Ah, so you admit to your basic ignorance. That's a good start. What the Board does meanwhile is identify what it believes to be proper levels of expenditure over the budget period. Then it looks at the levels of revenue that it can expect to receive. As the County receives such a inordinately large share of its revenues from real estate taxes, those rates are adjusted to try to create a balance. If you hadn't had your head just as far up your ass then as you do now, you would have noticed that the Board reduced rates several times in the years before the Great Bush Recession.

> Do you really believe this is a low tax jurisdiction?

It's a low tax AREA, That includes all forms of taxation. You probably ate not familiar with any, but check any credible source you like.

> Are you taking account of the very high cost of living?

The cost of living here is 'very high' in comparison to East Dustburg. Perhaps that is where you are from? For a major metro area with the array of first class amenities that we have, our COL is quite modest. Of course, there are still many who can't really afford to live here due to qualifying only for unskilled, low-wage employment.

Population continues to boom in Northern Virginia and shrink in many rural localities in the southern and southwestern parts of the state. Since 2010, Loudoun County's population has increased more than 27 percent, to more than 380,000. That percentage increase ranks fourth among all U.S. counties with at least 200,000 people. Since 2010, Fairfax County's population has grown more than 6 percent, to almost 1.15 million. The County is larger by population than eight states. National and state population growth since 2010 has been about 3%.

Just pitiful on so many levels.

There is ZERO need to "diversify" anything.

No where in the entire USA "needs" to tax people more. All government NEEDS to cut their size/cost to create funds.

Anyone who disagrees with the above is either ignorant of reality or a simple sheep being led to the slaughter.

We need the right amount of taxes. Contrary to the addled beliefs of ridiculous dumbfucks, that amount is greater than zero. Our elected reps have the job of determining the needs of their constituents. Unless they are all lying asses like Trump, they then have the obligation of creating the revenues needed to meet those needs. This is perhaps the most elementary process that governments go through, but morons have no problem screwing it up entirely. What a bunch of babbling uneducated losers.

Fairfax city alone generates about 5 million a year from their meals tax. Fairfax county could gain 5 times that figure each year. The county will harvest the funds from us one way or another so the meals tax is the least painful way to do it. We still have enough brain dead conservatives in this county to vote down a meals tax but thankfully they are dying off steadily and being replaced with educated and intelligent liberals.

County can cut excessive expenditures and not need a meals tax. Some ideas:

* County does not need to support translation into dozens of languages. If you are going to live here, have at least one family member that speaks English reasonably well as a translator. Savings of millions of dollars.

* Eliminate transgender initiatives in the schools. Savings, at least hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars.

* There are Fairfax Connector bus routes that regularly have 10 or less passengers. As one area, western Fairfax County off peak hours. As taxpayers, the county is paying the contractor $115 per hour to run this service that serves so few.

You Mayflower phonies are already a minority at that level and the level is climbing fast.

'Less' refers to amounts, churl. 'Fewer' refers to countable items. And why don't we also save money by not enforcing speed limits? You know it's only a small number of douchebags who try to drive all that fast. Why use all that expensive manpower and technology to go after something as trivial as speeding?

Remember that the USA has no official language so those translators are quite necessary.

Try to eliminate the money being spent on the transgender bathrooms that are going in an watch how many lawsuits will have to be defended. It is much cheaper to keep making the modifications.

All bus routes have slow times. The last thing we need with all the traffic we have around here is fewer bus routes.

You are right. The BOS is going to get the funding they need one way or another. That is why the meals tax is such a good tax. Nearly half the revenue will come from outside the county.
These fucking conservatives that think any tax is a bad tax really fucked us all over by voting down the meals tax. Now we all have to pay more.

The biggest problem with Fairfax County is.... The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. There is already a hotel occupancy tax and they were advised to just raise that a little bit. Most people staying here are coming for business purposes and their employer is going to pick up the tab.

The Donkeys in the Taj Mahal actually think there are tourists staying in Fairfax County. Newsflash, its incidental. They're coming to visit DC. The only thing worth seeing in this county is the Mount Vernon Estate and the Udvar Hazy branch of the Air & Space museum. That's it.

Elasticity of demand relative to hotel occupancy taxes is significant. As it can be seen up front by individual and corporate decision-makers, anyone advising any increase at all was economically ignorant.

Better hurry over there one last time. Like all those mattress stores, the Vienna Wolftrap Hotel is going, going, gone. I wonder if there will be yet another first-class dining option built on the site.

....If you did not vote or voted against the meals tax you have no right to complain about high taxes in Fairfax county.

The vote will come around again after some further years of having owners and renters pay for all the freight. The wisdom of having non-residents such as commuters, tourists, and business travelers pitch in to pick up part of the tab will eventually dawn on the County, as it has in almost every other jurisdiction in the area.
