Old enough to fight old enough to drink a beer and vote, so went the USA in the 1970s with the 18 yr old vote in Nov 1972 and the Virginia age of 18 for beer on July 1st 1974
That's because of the Vietnam war draft. The draft ended in the summer of 1972 and Democrats pushed the states later in the 90's and oughts to raise the drinking age to 21 or else lose federal highway money
Since theres no longer a draft the age to vote should be 21 again, and if the draft ever resumes dropped to the draft age.
But Democrats are at it again with Dirty Tricks, DC is about to lower the voting age to 16 ! Letting minors vote. This is insane! Yes the proposal will allow votes for President as well
If DC was a reliable GOP presidential vote the always hypocritical Democrats would scream bloody murder, but its a Democrat strong hold and they will scream let the people vote. BS all the way with that for that.
As far as DC goes its a nowhere player in the presidential elections, But the whole Dirty Trick is to establish a precedent nationwide of course to help Democrats, the same as the Illegal entry Dirty Trick for votes for Democrats.

It does NOT say that a state can't make it lower than 18!

Some states did allow voting at eighteen before the Twenty-Sixth took effect in 1971. Before 1971, the eighteen to twenty year olds could not vote in Federal elections. In fact, some of the states tried to keep the eighteen year olds from voting in the state elections. They did not try to stop them from voting in the Federal, but they did try to stop them from voting in the state or local. A case did make it to the Supreme Court, I seem to recall that it was from Oregon, but I can not be sure and I am too lazy to Google it.
The result was that the Supreme Court required the states to allow the eighteen year olds to vote in all elections.
As the Twenty-Sixth reads, you must be eighteen or older to vote in Federal elections. The states can lower the age for state and local.
It would not surprise me if Congress voided this law, as one poster above has ventured.

Since only 60% of DC students graduate from high school, the only hope for a future for the rest is from generous welfare handouts from the dependency party. That’s a state by state matter. In Maine, prisoners simply vote by absentee ballot. In DC, voting rights are restored as soon as whatever sentence is completed.
