This place (Fairfax) peaked 15 years ago...

Fairfax hit its peak roughly 15 years ago.

Look at our public schools. Take a look at our ratings vs that of other up-coming suburban areas.

Take a look at our infrastructure. Nothing but road improvements that will complete just in time for new vertical living space will force more road improvements.

There's a goddamn urgent care or hospital on every corner, but show me a restaurant with healthy foods. The juice-type places are steadily disappearing.

Most people spend at least an hour in their car each day, many spend twice that. Where's your quality of life?

Look at the people. I don't think I've seen a more miserable, self centered lot.

Oh...but we can afford nice stuff and we can eat at Great American Restaurants!

I think everyone is going to have a different opinion on this. 15 years? Maybe for someone who has not been here much longer than that and what they have done since moving here. I moved here in the mid 80s, and have moved away and back several times. Each time I move back I dislike this area more and more, but the job keeps bringing me back at least for a few years at a time. I personally liked the late 80s and early 90s. But I was a different place in my life with different interests, demands and priorities.

In comparison to the redneck regime that existed here when I arrived (1960's), things have improved a great deal. Trump is a threat to that.

Agreed, the best here is yet to be.

I've been in the area roughly 20 years. Things went to shit when then Governor Mark Warner hiked taxes through the roof, coupled with booming housing prices.

The developers own this area. Housing was put in, then they thought about improving the infrastructure which is ass-backwards. The local politicians largest source of tax revenue is real estate taxes, so they'll approve anything and everything until we all sit in grid-locked abject misery.

The local transplant inhabitants are the worst sort of entitled, hypocritical over-opinionated douche bags I have ever seen. If I see another Hokie, Nittany Lion or Shittsburgh Steelers license plate frame, I'll puke.

To put it succinctly, this area is a soulless, suburban wasteland. I cannot wait to move in a few years.

Those who somehow manage to fail here have every right to feel sad. It's like falling out on the $100 question on Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?   Sad, sad, sad.

eh, I "made it" there and then got the hell out. Like most people who "make it" do.

Most people who ‘make it’ here wish to stick close to the roots they’ve put down in the area. ‘Making it’ means not needing to run away to some comparative dump over a mere matter of a few dollars. Retirement-in-place is the A-Level choice.

Full time retirement here is just plain dumb. Part time retirement here is the only viable option. Well, for those that can afford that option. Full time retirees in this area spend an excessive time trolling on local message boards. That doesn't sound like a fun retirement.

Yeah, I have a family member who retired here but she is well off and only stays because of family ties.

I grew up in the 80's and 90's here, it was a totally different unrecognizable to today place.

Here are the main reasons this area sucks from biggest to least compared to like 30 years ago (also notice each of these things have been steadily getting worse and will continue to):

-Housing (& apartment) prices
-Overcrowding
-Traffic
-Illegal immigrants all over the place
-Way too many non-assimilating foreigners
-Most nature has been bulldozed for apartments/mcmansions/strip-malls
-bland/boring people, no real distinctness or culture

Low taxes. Moderate four-season climate. Relative absence of natural disasters. Beautiful rolling countryside with mature trees, creeks, and abundant wildlife. Tons of upscale amenities including first-rate shopping, dining, and medical care. Transit options around the region and up and down the east coast. Sports, education, and cultural options that match or beat anywhere else.

If it’s so bad, then you are cordially invited to fuck off and move to Orange, somewhere in West Virginia or some other red neck shangri la in the Midwest.

Sterling was a restricted community back in the 60's.

No niggers, no spics.

Jews fought hard to change that.

Judge them by their works.

wut? Last I checked property tax is pretty high.

Moderate???? It is 90 and humid for 4 months, then 2 weeks of 65 degree weather then freezing for 5 months followed by a few weeks of "moderate temperature in the spring.

This I will agree on.

Fairfax County is not beautiful, it is an overcrowded overpriced concrete hellscape. Now if you drive westerly for 60 miles then I would agree with what you are saying.

Upscale amenities?

Yes what a great option, to use the sad and ineffective, slow bus or metro system, or sit your car in stop & go traffic day after day.

Cultural things. Like, stuff to do that doesn’t involve pounding Budweisers and “laying a patch” in front of the Dairy Queen.

^^^ You could indeed make a TV show based on the bumblings of these backwoods bozos. Some of them might even watch themselves the way monkeys in the zoo look at tapes of themselves on TV.

Meanwhile, if you can't afford the house you want here, it's because your income is too low, not because housing prices are too high. If you don't recognize that this is a low-tax area, its because you don't know what taxes tend to run in comparable areas. If you think it's crowded here (FFX = 3,000 people per square mile), it's because you came from the middle of nowhere. If the traffic seems bad to you, it's because you foolishly chose to live a long way from work and then commute on the busiest roads at peak hours. If you think immigrants are a problem, it's because you don't realize that we are still below historical norms for the foreign born share of the population. If you don't like McMansions, don't choose to live near them. It doesn't sound like you could afford to anyway.

When the masses vote for shit, they get to wallow in shit. Too bad the ones that like a cleaner environment have to wade through all the demoncrat shit until they get to retire and flee.

This entire region went to hell when the muslim perverts started coming. It's been downhill ever since.
