Recycle Refrigerator Water Filter Cartridges

We have a LG refrigerator with a replaceable water filter cartridge. It is a big hunk of plastic and I have felt badly about putting them in the trash and now have a collection of about 8 of these in my garage. I know that Brita recycles their filters, but does anyone know if there is an alternative to just throwing them away? I did a Google search and came up with nothing. Cutting one in half with a hacksaw yields a charcoal core and I considered putting them in recycling, but I cannot find a number (1, 2) on the unit.

According to this site, no company has a filter recycling program: http://www.fridgefilters.com/faq.html#18

LG's website does have a customer support feature. You can have a live chat, email, or phone conversation with a representative M-F. It's a safe bet that they'd know the answer.

"We are not aware of any fridge manufacturer-supported recycling program. Dispose of your old filter just like you would a dirty air filter."

Not really the same thing - the water filter is a heavy piece of plastic that is never going to degrade. There are no marking on the filter to indicate that it can be recycled, at least in a community curbside program, which is unfortunate and a bit surprising. I decided to toss mine in the AAA bin and let them figure it out. Really not worth trying to get an answer from LG, but thank for the info.

Swift (Green Filters) manufactures LG filters and they recycle their filters plus they are much less expensive

Nice scam. They overcharge you for postage, then THEY throw the suckers out. Hint: if they were worth recycling, they'd be PAYING for them.

Here's where I start the journey to recycle my refrigerator water filter cartridge.

And here's where the journey ends.

I replaced the filter in my Whirpool 'frige after two years' service- according to the manufacturer, it was long overdue. I took it apart to see how soiled the filter was. The plastic housing was quite light... most of the weight was in the water-saturated, compressed carbon filter material. It was sheathed with a piece of fabric filter wrap that was still pristine-looking. I don't use the water dispenser a whole lot, though, mostly for ice cubes, so it's not as if thousands of gallons passed through it.
There's not much there worth recycling... just throw it out.

I throw mine down the storm drain in front of my house. The remaining carbon helps to filter and improve the water quality in Burke Lake.

Thanks for doing this -- I keep meaning to but not getting around to it.

I do wonder whether there was a big piece of ?something? in there that got used up, however. No, I'm not volunteering to waste a $30+ new filter to find out!

My fridge has been beeping at me to replace the filter for years, never will do it again. Payed $35 to change it once and it only lasted 3 months before starting to beep again.
