Controversy marking the annual homecoming at Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax, Virginia, has some students at odds with the county school system over the rules.
In a tweet sent out Wednesday, the Fairfax County Public School Student Union accused school leaders of discrimination for denying two male students the opportunity to be selected together as homecoming kings.
The group wrote that it was “deeply troubled and disappointed,” and the decision “directly influences all students of the LGBTQ+ community.”
Fairfax County Public Schools said the selection process is unchanged from previous years.
“Five male students and five female students will be presented as the homecoming court next month at a school pep rally. Students will select one king and one queen from the court,” John Torre, public information officer at Fairfax County Public Schools, said in a statement.
The school system’s statement went on to say that all homecoming court members may present either individually or as couples, accompanied by family members.
The student union has denounced the decision of selecting only one male and one female, calling it “traditional old school nuclear family type stuff that is outdated in 2018.”
Homecoming at Robinson Secondary was scheduled for this week but has been postponed a month because of Hurricane Florence.

If you don't like the County rule, then don't have a homecoming king and queen. Don't nominate. Don't hold the election. Don't vote in the election. If the school forces one on you, then skip the game. Empty stadium on homecoming game would have a far greater impact than a letter from the FCPSSU.

You are quibbling about word choice to hide the fact science doesn't support your XX-female XY-male only version of the world. It has been well established by science that human genetic genders are not limited to XX and XY. It has also been well established by science that even if you have someone with XY genes it also requires a timely hormone release for them to become anatomically fully male.
You say "Focus on your character and not your genitalia" but you mean "focus your character to reflect your genitalia". Medical science has progressed to the point where on many things we are no longer stuck with what nature gave us. Do you condemn the character of those who seek medical treatment to change their vision or their teeth? How about those who seek medical treatment to deal with unequal length legs? How about those who seek have cosmetic surgery or hair restoration treatments? Gender alteration is just the latest in that group, so why is it different? I couldn't imagine letting someone slice and dice me up down there and then pump chemicals into me to change my gender, but if medical science could figure out a way to make me three inches taller, I might consider it.
