It was the golden age of tennis, and on the women's side it was dominated by Martina Navratalova, both in singles and doubles. Before Martina Chris Evert had dominated. After Martina it was Steffi Graf. Women's tennis even then lent itself to dominant players.
On the men's side McEnroe was simply one good player among several. Not that you would know it by the way he acted. His behavior made many forget that Jimmy Connors had a reputation at one time as tennis's bad boy.

I saw the fateful game by complete chance.
At first I thought: this guy's getting kicked out, career over. And he did get penalty (would loose anyway). I was offended by his poor sportsmanship at first. Until he talked.
THEN - REWINDS AND INTERVIEW - YOU FIND OUT JOHN MCENROE WAS QUITE THE CHARACTER.
He was good, GREAT, for the Tennis business and his later tantrums may have been partly acting.
America loved him or at least loved to hate him!

Billy Jean King (a woman) was the person who most attracted USA to tennis. It was because of her you saw a covered tennis court go up down route 50 (chantilly). It was kinda a woman power thing or may be woman involvement thing - they looked to her as a woman that got things done.
