How long does it take to get a security clearance nowadays?

Just got a job offer pending a background investigation and I was told it can take up to a year maybe more to complete. Is this normal? I don’t have anything bad in my background except getting terminated from a job for something not related to misconduct. What are some reasons why it would take longer or even outright denied?

If you're white one to two hours.

Depends on how badly it’s needed in you position. If you’ll be handling serious info 100% of the time, you’ll get it quicker than someone at 20%.

I was wondering the same thing. I just had a great interview for a position requiring one and was told I might need an interim clearance. Not sure how long it takes to get those.

It depends on the clearance level you are trying to obtain, the urgency of how much the position is needed and each individual's personal, financial and employment history. THere is currently a backlog of about 700,000 waiting for a clearance. It could take anywhere from a month to a year. Be sure to add all necessary information on the sf-86. The more detailed and accurate it is, the quicker you will get your clearance.

The older you are, the longer it will take. Many of the places I lived off campus as a student were bulldozed and urban-renewed by the time I had to get clearances for some jobs later in life. Too many moves from place to place, too many organizations that you got involved in, and a nomadic lifestyle where you can't remember the addresses and friends you dated or hung around with etc and it raises red flags.

The people who get them the fastest are kids coming right out of the military who went into the military right out of high school (after living their entire lives in their parent's basements), and who were from military families; and then Mormons--at least it used to be Mormons that were favored due to their squeaky clean lifestyles. Since the Jeffs affair I don't know if that is still a practice to give them fast advancement under assumption that they are actually practicing Mormons, however. I do know a guy who had dated a foreign woman (who just happened to be a foreign agent, but unknown info to him at the time) when he was in college. He could never get a government clearance for the rest of his life after that.
