The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979 because terrorists were running camps there then bombing Russian transit stations. We claimed it was a ruse to get a warm water port (because Afghanistan has so many of those) and boycotted the Olympics. Ironically we invaded Afghanistan for the same reason.

The insurrection activity the Soviets were hoping to quell by invading Afghanistan arose in opposition to a Pro-Soviet government which had taken power in Afghanista in the Seventies. That government proved so weak that it was facing opposition even within its own ranks. If the Soviets were not already meddling in Afghanistan in the first place there would have been no need to meddle in Afghanistan in 1979.

A better analogy would be the U.S. decision to involve itself in the internal affairs of Vietnam in the Fifties which lead unrest which in turn was used to justify a U.S. backed coup and then massive U.S. military involvement.

80% of the people here are dumber than average, most by quite a lot. Still, acting like the ongoing wars in Chechnya would be some sort of headline news has to count as being even more stupid than usual.

Have you ever heard of the Uyghurs? The Chinese are banning them from naming their babies Mohammed and are sending them to re-education centers because they are causing trouble in China.
