Brake pad replacement
Posted by: Car Help ()

Does anyone know where I can go to get front and rear brake pads replaced for a reasonable price? I called a few places and they are charging $400-500 which is insane. They are charging $140 for front brake pads when they sell for $30 at advanced auto. I've never replaced pads before and I would like to avoid doing it myself if I can find a reasonable price.

What kind of car is it?

Overall, good mechanics are hard to find. You could find someone to do it cheap, but you're taking a chance that they'll screw it up. If it's a high end car, pay the price.

On most cars, brakes (especially discs) are pretty easy to do yourself. If you have rear drums, they're a little trickier.

I'd suggest getting a Haynes book for your car, (or the factory service manual if you're really serious), and doing it yourself before it gets too cold again.

400 to 500 bills sound like a reasonable price for a job like that. Remember that a good automotive shop must cover their cost plus make a profit in order to stay in business. Some of the overhead includes but is not limited to :Rent, insurance, electric bill, water bill, gas bill, tool maintenance, employees salary, hazardous waste disposal, uniforms, safety training, parts, advertising, office supplies, computers, ect. I am not in the automotive repair business but was many years ago. If you are that hard up for cash Im sure you can find an unlicensed uninsured illegal alien to change your brake pads for you on the side of the road somewhere. Just check craigslist. I just PRAY you can keep it on your side of the double line.

You're full of it. $50.00 in materials and 1/2 hour's work. Not worth $400-500.

I've heard good things about this guy:

He comes to your car. I'm going to try him next time I need brakes and don't feel like doing it myself.

"BS",
NOT fifty dollars if they are quality ceramic pads like a somewhat-sporty Impreza would use(WRX). But I am asuming the OP meant rotors also, when I say that person was right who said the stuff about overhead, insurance, ect.. I would suggest you get your China-made "rebranded" parts CHEAP off Ebay and find some Illegal Immigrant to change them for you on the side of the road, like was suggested.

No not rotors. Just pads, $500 dollars is fuckin insane. Ceramic pads for everyday driving are unnecessary, so I just need some pads that are around $60 a pair.

There's more involved than just the pads. They'll still have to turn the rotors and you don't know they won't need to be replaced. If you can't afford to have it done, I suggest you learn how to do it yourself.

Wheel Tech Information
Wheel Lug Torquing

Lea esta página en español

IMPORTANT!

Proper installation requires that the wheel lug torque be set to the recommended specification for your vehicle. Sometimes these torque specifications can be found in your vehicle's owner's manual, however more often than not you will need to refer to your vehicle's shop manual or obtain them from your vehicle dealer/service provider.

Unless specifically stated otherwise, wheel lug torque specifications are for clean and dry threads (no lubricant) that are free of dirt, grit, etc. Applying oil, grease or anti-seize lubricants to the threads will result in inaccurate torque values that over tighten the wheels.

A thread chaser or tap should be used to remove any burrs or obstructions of the threads allowing the lug hardware to be turned by hand until it meets the wheel's lug seat. Once lugs are snugged down, finish tightening them with an accurate torque wrench. Use the appropriate crisscross sequence (shown below) for the number of wheel lugs on your vehicle until all have reached their proper torque value. Be careful because if you over torque a wheel, you can strip a lug nut or hub, stretch or break a stud or bolt, and cause the wheel, brake rotor and/or brake drum to distort.

Use the dry wheel lug torque values specified in the vehicle's owner's manual, shop manual or obtained from the vehicle dealer/service provider. The chart below lists typical torque values that should only be used temporarily until the vehicle's exact torque values can be confirmed.

Since the thickness of an alloy wheel can differ from Original Equipment wheels, also verify that the lug nuts or bolts will engage the threads. Refer to the chart below to determine the number of turns or the depth of engagement typical for your stud or bolt size.
Hardware Bolt or
Stud Size Typical Torque Range
in Ft/Lbs Minimum Number of Turns
of Hardware Engagement
12 x 1.5 mm 70 - 80 6.5
12 x 1.25 mm 70 - 80 8
14 x 1.5 mm 85 - 90 7.5
14 x 1.25 mm 85 - 90 9
7/16 in. 70 - 80 9
1/2 in. 75 - 85 8
9/16 in. 135 - 145 8

When installing new wheels you should re-torque the wheel lugs after driving the first 50 to 100 miles in case the clamping loads have changed following the initial installation. This is necessary due to the possibility of metal compression/elongation or thermal stresses affecting the wheels as they are breaking in, as well as to verify the accuracy of the original installation. When rechecking torque value, wait for the wheels to cool to ambient temperature (never torque a hot wheel). Loosen and retighten to value, in sequence. Simply repeat the same torque procedure listed above.

If you called a couple of shops and the quotes were all around $400 - $500, it's likely that *is* a reasonable price. If it was unreasonable, one of those shops would have come in dramatically under that cost.

Or... You only called 2 or 3 places. Hit the yellow pages and just start dialing.

I had a honda accord with pressed on rotors. Every place I went to they were charging up to and over 1,000 dollars for replacement of the rotors and brakepads. I also had to replace my axel, bearings and 2 tie rods becuase I hit a pile of drywall on 66 that sent my car launching into the air. Anyways I took my car out to this guy in nokesville, he with a huge shop in his backyard and he charged me 300 bucks give or take for everything. The name of the shop is all-tech and a quick google search will pull up his website/number. Apparently all the good old boys use him out there and he does not have the overhead like the shops do around here hence the cheaper pricing. its 10 miles west of manassas on 28.

2 transmission shops told me I had to replace my tranny. I took it out to alltech, they put it on a lift and it was just a loose linkage from the shifter to the transmission. total charge- $50.00.

I wondered why this repair shop was not so busy, while next door and most other shops were full. We made a mistake of taking our car and it was the worst decision. I think the owner or manager guy is too moody and angry -needs to stay on the repair shop and let someone else service the customers. He seems so botter and short with us and could not get a hold of himself...ODD! go somewhere else is our recommendation

Maybe not to you. If it isn't worth $400 to $500, DO IT YOURSELF. There are plenty of YouTube videos that will show you how to do many auto repair jobs, so I'm guessing you can find one that will teach you how to do your brakes. Then all you need to do is go out and get all of the correct tools to do the work, find a good place to do it, and spend an afternoon getting the job done. I've done my own brakes since I was a teen, and have recently taught my son how to do them. Of course if anything does go wrong, you are the one on the hook.

Or you can simply keep your eyes open for when one of these chain stores has a special on brake repairs.
