The "Madison Island" Two Years Later
Posted by: Suburban Historian ()

It's been about two years since FCPS did away with the "Madison Island" that attended Wolftrap, Thoreau and Madison. At the time, people were very angry about this change.

With the passage of time, how do those affected feel about that change now?

Did some of you sell your homes and move to a new district? Or stay put but find ways to stay in the old pyramid, rather than Sunrise Valley/Hughes/South Lakes?

What about those who stayed put and accepted the new boundaries? Were you pleasantly surprised with the new schools, or was your experience just the opposite?

Not interested in rehashing the old RD thread (what's done is done), but curious as to the experience of people who lived through the process first-hand.

This was typical of what happened at the time. Some people dumped their houses to get out of the area for much less than what they could have received if they'd stayed in the Madison district. It literally was a transfer of wealth from people in MI to Reston homeowners.

That's not that bad, when they sold the house they only lost $350,000.

Could it be from the overall housing slump?

You can't attribute the low sales price simply to the housing slump. BTW, I don't think they actually lost $350,000 on the house, but the house would have gone for at least another $200,000 had the boundaries not been changed.

I call BS on that one. There is no way the change had that much of an effect.

Well, yeah, there is. All you need to do is compare prices for similar homes in Vienna assigned to Madison, Oakton or Marshall. They are much higher. Buyers knew these sellers in MI were anxious and unhappy so they had all the bargaining power.

I think those MI sellers need professional help if that's the case.

There's house not far from Madison island that recently sold about $400k less than the previous price. It happens to be in the Langley HS pyramid, a much better school than Madison.
