That is how people in the Forties felt, and the Sixties. Even the anti-government Reagan administration was responsible for a new wave of carpetbaggers. Before WW2 Fairfax was rural, southern and had a black population over ten percent, with only a few enclaves of suburbia. Stuart was named after a Confederate general, but large numbers of its early students came from outside the old Confederacy.

Changing the name was good for one thing only, the fact that it pisses off conservatives. Now we are going to change the name of Lee high school which will reportedly cost the local taxpayers over $700,000. The name change thing is just getting started folks! It will be expensive in the short-term but you cannot put a price on doing right!

"We, the undersigned, are a group of JEB Stuart alumni and other concerned citizens who think it is past time to rename Fairfax County high schools that bear the names of Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and J.E.B. Stuart and prominent segregationist W.T. Woodson, especially since these schools were intentionally named in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s to fuel racial tension. The undersigned include alumni from some of the earliest graduating classes of JEB Stuart High School, along with some of its most recent graduates and current students as well: we are community elders standing united, side by side with our youth."

Signed, Fairfax county taxpayers

Some of you may know that the United States is completely comprised of land stolen by force and held through systematic murder of it's original occupants.
The importation of enslaved black people stolen in Africa is just one more element of the proud history of the US.
Murdering native Americans was conducted by such famous Americans such as George Washington who also was a huge slave owner. He also betrayed his oath to England as a former British officer.
Picking on former Confederate officers provides a satisfying diversion for person who wish to ingnore the whole of US history. Also US blacks which are one hundred times better off than African blacks have yet another thing to shine about.
Empires have come and gone throughout history and those that depended on using force to extend their aims have had shortly fallen.
The rest of the world has mostly caught up with the US technologically and while the names of high schools occupy the simple minded, the rest of the world is focused on ,if you can believe it, somewhat more important matters.

Don't be so ignorant as to underestimate the importance of symbolism. Stamping out the venal tenets of Confederate social philosophy was once worth some 600,000 lives. It is certainly worth whatever small change it takes today to underscore the destruction of such injurious tripe.

So rename Washington DC.
Every other minority overcame discrimination by ignoring it and working hard.
Some vocal blacks condemn the rest to a life of victimhood instead.
Vietnamese came to America in the late 70s and despite the US having just ended a war with them, they overcame discrimination in one generation by working hard and their children dominate advanced education.
They , however didn't employ a culture of victimhood for one hundred and fifty years , whining and complaining as a profession.
Same with Germans, Italians, Irish,Jews etc.
All succeeded by hard work no complaining.
Wise up Willis.

Names like WT Woodson and Robert E Lee high school are racist attacks of intimidation against people of color. That was the intent when the schools were originally named and that threat is still present today.
The real heinousness here is that these horrific names have not been changed already. At the very least the existing signage should be removed immediately. I would think that could be accomplished by the FCPS maintenance crews before the first day of school at a bare minimum of expense to the taxpayers. The new names and signage could be added at a later date. The fact that so little effort has been made so far is rock solid proof that Fairfax county is still an incredibly racist county.

Woodson did not want the school named for him, the 1962 school board did that because he was the superintendent of FCPS from 1929 to 1962 and brought Fairfax from 1 room schools to modern schools of the day , including many schools that were black schools as that was Virginia law .

Your a pitiful hate filled idiot who blames everyone of the day so why don't you say anything about ALL the Virginia Democrats who were in power in Virginia for so long as Governor, US Senators , congressmen, State Senator and delegates along with the BOS . He holds back true black achievement by making excuses for failure.
Outside of amusing people with
Baskapeball and other various running and jumping and shucking and jiving in entertainment,, the vast majority of blacks are far behind the general population financially.
It's not their fault, it's high school names that are holding them back.

A weak attempt to attack the author is all you got?
In educated circles this is known as an
Ad Hominem attack.
That's Latin by the way .

Not Swahili or Hausa or other great contributors to science, medicine, and of course not literature because you need an alphabet and writing for stuff like that.

General R.E. Lee was a loyal American civil war veteran who served his home state of Virginia in a different day when Virginia voluntarily withdrew from the Union the same way as the state voluntarily entered the Union as all states did, the result was civil war that began with the North attacking the south, why change the names

Please explain for comical relief of the FCPS board and your hateful stupidity of Americans of years past

Will you rant about changing the names of liberal named schools in California when they voluntarily withdraw from the union ? lol

Woodson BTW had nothing to do with any of this, he was a school administrator who did a excellent job for blacks and whites in Fairfax County schools during his term as Superintendent of schools. He never served in any political office, he never wrote any laws, he served the people.

You and the board now want to hate every one alive at that time huh. So you and the board except Moon hate your family , Moons family was not here then but he personally will hate everyone else to go along with the haters

That was Virginia law during WT Woodsons time as superintendent of schools in Fairfax County, Not WT Woodsons law and Woodson had to follow the laws by seeing new modern school buildings built for black students with the same building features as the white schools thatw ere built. Luther Jackson HS, Louise Archer, Floris , James Lee, Charles Drew all were built as modern schools for blacks in Fairfax County as the law required. WT Woodson was not a lawyer, not a politician, he was a school superintendent and he did a good job for every one in Fairfax County black and white to move the county from one room local schools to modern facilities where students were bused in from farther distance as schools are today, he took Fairfax County Schools from horse and buggy days to the days of the space program .

It is despicable to see anyone wanting to change the name of W T Woodson High School by declaring he was some kind of inhuman racist.

I doubt the "better world" you're talking about will work out so well, with totalitarian pricks like you running it. Most rational people in this country will continue to try and live their lives and raise their families, regardless of assinine policies about school names, safe spaces, and speech codes. A wise man once said: "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."

As is true with so much in history things are not as simple as your feeble mind would like to present them. It is true the name Stuart had no geographic connection to the Seven Corners/Baileys Crossroads/Barcroft area where JEB Stuart High School was located. Stuart himself had only fleeting connections with Fairfax County.

Lee is different. The Lee family had connections with Fairfax dating back to George Washington's time. The immediate family of Robert E Lee were property owners in the Springfield area through their relations the Fitzhughs. The Springfield area was known as Lee District since the 1870s, a time when Virginia wasn't under the control of conservative ex-Confederates. That was only slightly later than the Springfield name which dates from the 1850s, and far older than other names associated with the area. Until that time geographic names were the norm for Fairfax high schools. Springfield and Lee were the only logical geographic names for the school.

The other part of the story is that although Fairfax shifted from geographic high school names to names of persons, they did not limit it to Virginia Confederates and Woodson. The policy also gave us Edison, Marshall, Madison, Jefferson and, slightly later Robinson. The black high school opened about that time was named in honor of the respected black historian Luther Jackson. If it was always a plot to enshrine the Confederate heroes of the massive resistance, someone did not get the mono.

I don't understand why it is taking so long to rename Robert E Lee high school. The name is clearly offensive and it needs to be changed immediately. Although Crestwood high school is the popular choice for the new name no final decision has been made yet. At the very least the existing signage should be removed NOW!

Abraham Lincoln pardoned Lee and all of those brave men who fought for the Confederacy. The Civil War was a tragic event about the original sin of the United States, slavery, which was legal according to the Constitution until 1865.

"With malice toward none,...with charity for all, let us bind up the nation's wounds."
~Abraham Lincoln 2nd Inaugural Address-1865

We desperately need more charity and less malice in 2018

Sadly I learned false facts about the civil war in public school here in America as well as almost every other bit of history that I was schooled. You know it wasn't until last year I learned the real history and I feel bad I made a relative feel uncomfortable for wearing a shirt with the rebel flag on it. If I only knew the truth back then I would have saluted him. A confederate south army of volunteers and a union army of mostly drafted men imagine that. Amazing how rich bankers and the wealthy elite can manipulate people.

The Confederate government also enacted a draft law, and if you owned a certain number of slaves, you were exempt. Wealthy men on both sides could hire substitutes to take their place as cannon fodder. The Civil War was a nasty, tragic affair....and, sadly, we're still not over it.

By all means remove the names of traitors from public schools. The names of army bases should also be changed if they were named after rebels and traitors.

The post-civil war rapprochement between Northerners and southerners was always a direct slap in the face of black Americans. Another compromise that allowed whites to get on by agreeing to denigrate black people. It’s long past time to correct such wrongs. Of course such efforts outrage “conservatives.” It is becoming increasingly clear that white racial tribalism is the glue that holds American conservatives together.

Changing a few names of public schools will not change conservative hearts and minds....it will only harden them. Tribalism will never disappear.....it will only metastasize. History is one long tragic timeline of humans behaving humanely to other humans...for a myriad of reasons. White vs black, Protestant vs Catholic, rich vs poor, Hatfield vs McCoy, Crip vs blood, Jew vs Muslim, etc..etc.
