Beltway Ramp Closure in McLean (another VDOT experiment)

Check out the story on WTOP.

Because of traffic (and lots of money), McLean residents proposed VDOT close the ramp to the inner loop from Rt. 193.

Guess what?

VDOT may try it for 4 months, closing the ramp 1-7pm.

There are two town hall meetings first at McLean HS and FFXCO Government Center.

The folks in McLean do not want cut through traffic keeping them from getting to soccer practices and yoga classes.

Drivers will need to enter the inner loop from Rt. 123, 267 or 7.

Such a deal.

Let's close all the ramps.

When we do, we can turn the Beltway into a super-sized park or a whole bunch of new Mosaic Districts.

You know this might nort be the worst idea...

I live in Vienna near wolf trap and sometimes I'll take 193 home from Georgetown if 123 looks to be slow

and it is a shitty intersection. with balls hill road right there there is a lot of traffic trying to get on the beltway. Oftem times the traffic turning left onto the inner loop or traffic crossing balls hill to get onto the inner loop will block the box, which prevents cars on 193 from continuing on towards great falls, which ends up backing up traffic on 193

before closing the ramp. I would first prevent balls hill road traffic from turning left (west bound) onto 193 and see if that helps with the grid lock. and also stopping east bound 193 traffic from turning left onto the inner loop. IE keep the ramp open for west bound 193 traffic

So eastbound traffic would merely pass the ramp, then make a U turn or enter local streets to change direction.

Balls Hill traffic would merely turn right on 193, then use local streets to change direction.

Great “solution.”

Nearly all morning rush hour traffic north across the bridge has VA plates. Since VA is making it harder for MD to return home after work, perhaps MD should experimentally close one lane of the Legion Bridge during AM rush hour and make it hard for VA to get to work.

McLean style NIMBYism at its finest. Since VDOT has gone anti-car, they might pull it off.
