Frye Road in 1963

Planning a weekend getaway to Alexandria for my Mom’s 80th birthday. In 1963 my Dad was stationed at Fort Belvoir and they lived in the upstairs apartment of a red brick house house on 200 Frye Road. I’m sure the house is no longer there, the street numbers have since changed to 4 digit numbers and the area has been built up, but I would like to take her on a drive through that area....does anyone know what section of Frye road would have been designated as the 200 block in the early 1960’s?

Hope it is a pleasant trip.

If you voted republican, you won't get any help, you will be told to fuck off
and die.

If you voted Democrat, you could call the local library
research desk and they would help you for free.

My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius. Commander of the armies of the North, general of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife, and I will have my vengeance in this life or the next.

I wouldn't do it but, if you insist, be sure to go in an armored tank. If you're planning on getting out of the tank have bulletproof gear on.

From RT 1, drive down Frye Road to Manor Drive and start looking on the left at that intersection. It is probably one of the ones from 8320 to 8316 Frye Road.

I am guessing this based on the following. House numbers must go from low to high as you travel from the highway into the woods, because when the road is built, you don't know how high the numbers will eventually go. (For example, looking at the construction, think Frye Road in fact has been extended a block further north since then.) The first part of Frye Road is apartments and new houses, so that would have been the 100 block. Then comes Odessa Dr, and if there was anything there, it was wiped out and replaced by that block of modern row houses. (Perhaps that was the 200 block.) Then comes Manor Drive, which still has original houses from the time period you're talking about (built in the late 1940s, looks to me). The first thing you will see are a couple of two-story red brick single-family houses. And those are the only ones you'll see; the remainder of the road has some old houses (and some new), none of which are the kind you're looking for.

It was either one of those houses starting from Manor Drive, or it was on the previous block and no longer exists. Note that the yard probably has slightly different foliage than it did 55 years ago (trees and coverage will be larger, at the least). Your Mom might recognize one of the houses, or else you can say, "Well, it must have been right over there and is gone."

Have fun!

Stacy, go to historicaerials.com and enter the address. You can look at pics from 1965 through 2015 and figure out where the house was and what is most likely there today.

As explained, the address no longer exists and she's not sure where it is.
Also, that site is low-res AERIAL photos, so she can't see what it looks like.

What drives you to be this unpleasant? I was suggesting that using that site she could tell what area the house would have been in and switching between years she could get an idea of what that same area looks like today so that she'd be able to drive there.

It was thought, and a nice one. I'd rather try to be helpful than to put down others but you keep right on doing you... although I doubt it's working very well for you.

Indeed. Anyone over the age of 15 would be able to figure out that OP might be able to at least see "OK, there were houses here, here, and here, but not there" and that's a big clue. Keep on keepin' on, onerealanswer -- don't let the morons on here drive you out!

God, you must be one simple f'er.

Are you employed?

If so, is this how you handle work "issues"?

Remind me not to work with that company.

This would be your best bet. Go to this site and enter the address. Then scroll through the available years of satellite photos so you can pinpoint the home...

I've been retired for 8 years.
It looks like you're posting from work.

And you're busy telling someone to input a street address that does not exist.
In order to (fail to) obtain information that was already given to them.

I am thinking that when they went to four digit numbering they just added a digit to the beginning of the existing address. For example, 200 Frye would become 8200 Frye. While 8200 Frye is not a two level red brick home, there are two directly across the street. Cross street would be Frye and Kidd. Pure speculation on my part, but I don't know why they had to go from three to four digit addresses but it makes sense to me the easiest thing to do would be to just tack on a leading digit.

Did a little spelunking on the Fairfax County property tax site. If OP is serious, he might try to find these folks and ask them:

BARRY DONALD R 8101 FRYE RD JUN/26/1968
WEST RICHARD LEE 8015 FRYE RD N/A
SHANER ALBERT LEWIS 8013 FRYE RD N/A
ASHTON JAMES P 7911 FRYE RD DEC/26/1974
LODER HAROLD M 7922 FRYE RD DEC/31/1966
CUTRIGHT MARVIN D 8304 FRYE RD N/A
WILLS AND VAN METRE INC 8208 FRYE RD N/A

Those dates are date of last sale. The N/A might mean the property has not sold since Fairfax County started keeping records; I don't know. But I bet that Harold M. Loder will at least know where 200 Frye used to be. Might want to call him quick -- nuwber.com (whatever that is) lists him at over 100 years old!
