Am I crazy for staying in Fairfax county for my retirement?
Posted by: 66 year old ()
Date: July 02, 2018 04:54AM

I retired from a government job about a year ago and am living in my house in Burke that I bought in 1987 and paid the mortgage in full. The county taxes cost more than the mortgage payments were. It makes me think I am wasting money by staying here but I like my neighbors, doctors and my church. My kids tell me to sell the house and move to Lake Anna. I wish my wife was still alive to help me decide but the good Lord took her from me 4 years ago. Any serious advice would be appreciated.

Depends on your needs: if there are no kids and a big house, you could sell while the market is good now, and get a seriously nice, smaller place outside Northern VA.

You can always visit your neighbors and you could make an ‘appointment day’ where you can drive here and visit your doctors.

Don’t forget that your neighbors will probably move away when they retire. The church community would be a loss though.

YES - FC has negatives but Lake Anna does NOT have the proximity of great medical care, shopping, transportation etc. It would be a great place for your kids to visit however, so that could be taken into consideration. In the summer. Not such a great place to visit in the winter months. I would stay and consider the taxes well worth spent for the services available.

Living here could add years to your life. My dad had a heart attack and would have died if he didn't live so close to Fairfax Hospital. Has added 10 years to his life..

So sorry about your wife. I am working through this right now, although my spouse is still alive. When I factor in the cost of moving, I can afford to stay right where I am and buy help as needed, although Inreally would like a smaller place. A four bedroom condo would be wonderful, if there is such a thing. I could buy two 2-bedroom condos.......

Having moved a lot in the military, the support system that I have developed is priceless.

My wife and are retired and our kids live relatively close by. We had once
talked about moving to my hometown in the midwest where the cost of living
is very cheap compared to here. I already own property there and it's paid
for so selling our house here which is also paid for would be icing on the
cake. Then reality set in and we really don't want to wind up only seeing
our kids a few times per year. The kids are in their late 20's, college
educated professionals, and make good salaries so we don't have to support
them anymore. Not trying to sound like a soap opera, but our daughter and
her boyfriend broke up last year and it was not a pretty scene. She needed a
place to stay for a while and I'm glad we were able to provide that along
with the emotional support she needed. Our son and his girlfriend seem to
be happy together after four years but I'm not ruling anything out just yet.
It's nice to have them both here on holidays and whenever they feel like stopping
by so we feel blessed. My wife went through major surgery and physical therapy
a while back and at least one of them came to see her in the hospital every
day so that's another perk of staying here.

If your total net worth is over $1mil, staying here is a mistake.
If you don’t know what your net worth is, stay.

OP. Condolences about your wife.

If you want to be close to family, then move close to your adult kids so you can spend time with them and your grand kids.

However, you COULD move elsewhere and test the waters. Eventually you could move back to this place which is increasingly difficult to deal with .. traffic, overcrowding, multiple families in one home.

If you kids live that close by. You can visit them anytime. Ever thought about renting out your place and then living in a basement apartment in a nice neighborhood.
Sounds crazy, but it may work out as a profit for you and help a bit.

This area is very expensive and in many ways.

If you can afford it, the only sensible choice is to stay right here. Once you’ve put down roots, everywher else is a downgrade.

Wrong. And, in many other areas people can correctly spell everywhere. This is a fine place for a second home/condo in retirement, but no place to stay year round. Too many negatives outweigh the positives.

Ok place in summer if your waterfront, boring as hell the rest of the year drive miles to go to the Food Lion. Been there a couple times , no big deal to me way too slow, listen to grass grow, you can do that anywhere BTW Im over 60. NOVA has its + and its - but its close to all kinds of good things to see and do mountains to beaches as well as riding the real estate elevator if that's your thing still.

Fredericksburg would be a better place then L.A. lots of things to do, shopping dining YMCA's fitness you got it and 35-45 miles up I95 your in NOVA 55-65 to DC . FB has a old town section thats nice to walk around laots of places to eat & shop and the Rappahannock river is a park all along in the city. L.A is 30 more + miles away. FB is also 45 -55 miles from Richmond and the same to the Blue Ridge and Lower Potomac as well as the Rapp. Lots of things to do down there in every direction like NOVA and houses are 1/2 price as well as RE taxes. You can get a brand new 4 Br house nearby for 375K-425K in new subdivisions

I am retiring in a couple years and will have to pay for health insurance for my wife and I for at least 4 years till medicare kicks in so we are looking at 15k to 18k a year just for health insurance. We are hopefully going to Harrisonburg depending on the real estate situation at the time of my retirement. Several of our old neighbors are down there and we have been visiting. We like it and we can easily pay cash for a little 1200 square foot house on one level down there. I would suggest to the OP that he spend a couple nights in Harrisonburg before JMU starts up again and check the place out. Summers there are very calm and laid back when school is out.

You need to get out more. Fairfax county blows. Too much traffic, crime and illegals are everywhere. We are heading to West by God Virginia about an hour west of Winchester. Got us a little cabin with a fantastic mountain view out there. Just 4 more years till we can move out of the shithole known as Fairfax county. I would leave now if I could afford health insurance like the OP.
Our house here is paid off and as soon as we sell it we can pay off the cabin and still keep 200k to add to our nest egg. With two county pensions we will be living good.

You sound like the kinda guy in FFCO government that made this place a great place to raise a family....back in the 80s when I was a kid living here happily with my family (Robinson class of '89).

You must be on the forefront to explain what the hell happened to Fairfax county in the late 1990's to 2000s? I know the easy answer is too many progs, libtards, democrats, and brown people came to Northern Virginia during that time, but how did people manage to give up this once great county to the globalist hoardes? Someone sold us out to the globalists, and now the county is a shithole thanks to illegal alien loving scum like Sharon Bulova.

I think the real answer is the fake republicans in FFCO that ran for office during that time, who were really just globalist corporatists and did not care for the average native Northern Virginian.

Please expound on this theory or another if you think there's another explanation.

I dont know exactly how it happened. Sounds like I am 12 years older than you. When my Dad brought us here in 1963 he did so because they gave him a easy-gravy job at the pentagon because he was a disabled veteran and not a fake ass disability like PTSD. He got half his left asscheek blown off in WW2 and walked with a limp. In those days this place was loaded with real Americans, there were plenty of liberals but what was considered a liberal in those days was a far cry from what it means today.
I grew up being influenced by the boy scouts, the Braddock road boys club and the Presbyterian church. I was taught real life skills like surviving in the woods, hunting and fishing, home and car repairs. Just look at what the kids are being influenced by today, video games and the internet. People pay these illegals for their labor because they are too lame to help themselves.

Yes I met my friend's neighbor in Burke. He's got some cush job with a high level security clearance. To our shock, he asked my friend to help him change the tire on his car. This man was 55 years old!!! and did not know how to change it.

It did not appear that he had any learning disabilities and he DID have a top clearance.
Of course my friend helped him out, but it's sad to see.

Ideal Living is an expo show at the Ritz Carlton in Tysons Corner, usually twice a year. Next one is on September 22-23. They have displays of retirement locations all over the U S. Most vendors offer reduced rental days so you can visit the locations before you commit yourself to buying a home.

"Here" was referring to this region. A smarter individual would've picked up on that given the topic of discussion and the context of the conversation.

Given your level of stupidity, it's no wonder you're stuck here lumbering through your golden years. I'm grateful to be able to get away frequently at this stage in my life. I couldn't imagine not being able to do so in my retirement.

Of course, if I was stuck here, I'd put on a happy face and pretend this place is the cat's ass too. Well, only if I was an insecure boob.

You are in a tight spot my friend. You couldn't retire young enough to get your kids out of the hellhole you now find yourself. With kids now educated and rooted in careers, moving with the family would be totally disruptive and stressful for all involved. Rest assured, Unfairfux County will never return to the genteel County of the 70s and 80s.

Former resident now repotted in white, right and tight Idaho.

They don’t have lawns to speak of in Falls Church. Not enough room for more than a few trash cans and a washed out gravel patch or two.

You are a serious douche.

"When my Dad brought us here in 1963 he did so because they gave him a easy-gravy job at the pentagon"

So your father was a leech..... check.

"He got half his left asscheek blown off in WW2 and walked with a limp"

I retired from Verizon at 62 and immediately sold my house in centreville and bought a bungalow in Front Royal for cash. The living is dirt cheap out here compared to Fairfax. Front Royal has the cheapest utility rates in the state of Virginia. Quality of life out here is 100% better and I can still drive to Gainesville and use INOVA health services.

The OP said his mortgage was paid off. What he was saying is that his current bill for taxes and insurance cost him more than his original mortgage payment was. I know a few old timers that are in the same situation. Proof that you never really own anything.

The crazy thing is assuming you will move to some low cost, more societally acceptable Shangrila without doing serious homework first. I have known a number of people who thought they could move a few hours away and have the best of both worlds-being far enough away from NoVa to get away from those things they don't like but close enough to still be able to enjoy those things they do like. After a few months to a couple of years they start finding themselves isolated. Turns out those few hours are enough so they don't maintain the ties to this area they thought they would. They don't fit into the larger community in their new area either.

If you can afford to do it the smart thing is to give the area you are considering retiring to a trial run. Go during the off season. For Florida that means March through September. What you want is to experience the drudgery of day to day living in your new destination. Subscribe to the local paper and listen to the local radio and TV. Shop in local stores.

Because the taxes have gone up exponentially since he bought the place, so now they alone are more than the original payment.

So a few things to unpack here:

1.Your original mortgage was probably for about $200k - that would have bought you a nice 4 bedroom 2000 sf house back in 87 so your mortgage was probably in the $1,300 range. With appreciation your taxes might be $6k per year so, bullshit your taxes are not more than your mortgage was.

2. Lake Anna is a nuclear cooling pond loaded with dangerous bacteria and brain-eating Naegleria fowleri amoeba. Also its a narrow, muddy turbid body of water infested with rednecks.

3. Virginia and Fairfax have relatively low taxes compared to many states.

4. If you want to live where your retirement income is not taxed move to Delaware or S. Carolina.

5. Sorry about your wife, getting old basically sucks in every single way. Probably the reason middle aged men are killing them selves in record numbers these days.

6. Fairfax is a diverse highly educated population near culture such as plays, the opera, the worlds finest museums and a decent food culture. The biggest cost of living here is housing and you no longer have a mortgage - dont move to the middle of a cornfield amidst ignorant white racists where the idea of a cultural night out is eating moon pies outside the VFW on Memorial Day for fucks sake.

It's just OK. Many of the folks that live their want certain amenities that they simply cannot afford in other, more desirable areas.

Dan, you're dumb. As the above individual pointed out, it's about where X is located. You can have the exact same home with identical amenities located in two different zip codes. They could be hundreds of thousands of dollars apart in price. The cheaper one isn't a bargain. It's just in a less desirable location. The fact your dumbass doesn't get this explains why you're doomed to live in the not top tier location you're so fond of. It's OK though. Dumb people like you don't fit in so well around our parts.

If you move to Florida you may not be exposed to snow and ice but if you are white you will be constantly targeted as an old white male. find a place in the mountains with a good hospital and other services close by. Fairfax is the new San Salvador / Tijuana. It is not a safe place much like most cities in florida with the exception of marco island. but it will not be long before the western side of florida is transformed as well.

can't go to Europe because the race war will start there.

"Desirability" is a subjective not objective criteria. Some areas which are considered "desirable" may possess better amenities, better layouts or be closer to work or entertainment venues. Other areas which are considered "desirable" are based on historic distinctions which no longer exist, but which still have a snob factor today. I offer my neighborhood of Mantua as an example of the latter.

Rather than automatically accepting someone else's assessment of what is more or less desirable, each owner should make that determination on his own, based on criteria that matter to him. A person might be able to afford to live in McLean. For the same or less money he might also be able to find a much nicer home in other areas which is at least as easy a commute, which has as good schools and which has better amenities for that homeowner.

Yo, dumbass, you failed on post one and you're still failing. Coming back and reaffirming your stupidity on these matters isn't winning you any points. The fact that you can't comprehend that X in your neighborhood of Shitsville is worth less than X in my neighborhood of Highclassburg puts you beyond stupid. It doesn't matter if X is a two car garage, a 450 square foot ipe deck, a 250 square foot walk in closet or a gourmet kitchen. You might be able to get the aforementioned amenities in Shitsville, but you certainly can't attain them in Highclassburg. Such is your unfortunate lot in life.

If you can afford to live in your home (taxes/upkeep) and you are happy with where you are, stay there. If you are happy, it is not "wasting" money to stay where you are.

If living in the home is a financial stretch for you and you are asking your kids to take care of routine maintenance then it's time to consider downsizing.

You could check into some retirement communities now to see what appeals to you. That way, when it comes time to make a move you'll know what you want to do.

Selling our home in Fairfax and moving to the Shenandoah valley was the best move we ever made. Our utilities and taxes run about $335 a month. We easily paid cash for our retirement house. We come back and visit every couple months and stay with friends or sometimes a nice hotel. Hotels are dirt cheap on the weekends in NOVA. We have a positive cash flow and are banking about 1300 a month.

The future of Fairfax can be seen in Montgomery County. There are smaller and smaller pockets of wealthy and safe communities while the 3rd worlders take over there. Fairfax is quickly following suit.

The one saving grace for Fairfax was a kick-ass police force. But even that has eroded greatly since Bulova seized power.

If you're in your late 60's, you might be able to ride it out and die before Fairfax truly hits Montgomery County shittiness. But you'll be pushing it. Of course, if you're a liberal SJW who thinks an influx of uneducated, welfare-taking, non-English speaking, American-hating 3rd world takers is a plus for a community, stay put. That's what you'll be getting over the next 20 years till you drop dead or are murdered for your iphone or killed by a drunk beaner in a beat-up F150.

I know a lot of stories when people retired from my government job and I can see that maybe this is a great choice to make. It is full of dirt and lies. I worked in the government of my country to when I can see that I needed some help for the retirement planner. I’m happy that the company which link I will attach you here helped me a lot. They have a really professional staff and their services are just great.
