We’ve all been at a busy intersection when an impatient driver tried to make it across, and ends up blocking the intersection.

@FairfaxCountyPD hear your complaints and are doing something about it.

Also, in va, you cannot pause in between roads(like route 50) for example.

Dont block intersections. Simple.

It looks like to me that they are enforcing the no U-turn that has the red flag on top of if.

Ticketing for "box blocking" is appropriate and needed.

Keep in mind when traffic is moving at speed that the DC area is generally a "red plus 3" area. After the light turns red, you get either 3 more cars or 3 seconds to continue through the intersection.

That rule applies to cars making left turns against oncoming traffic.

Even with that rule the general rule that a driver approaching a green light may proceed through the intersection if it appears he will be able to exit the intersection before the light changes applies. The key to the general rule is what the traffic situation was when the driver entered the intersection.

Example 1: You enter into an intersection following another car, that car then stops to make a left turn even though he didn't have his turn signal on (which never happens in Northern Virginia), so you are now stopped behind him in the intersection. By the time he turns the lane you were going into, which was clear when you entered the intersection, has now been filled by cars making a right on red. NO VIOLATION because at the time you entered the intersection it appeared you would be able to exit it before the light changed. The result would be the same if you entered to make a left turn against oncoming traffic, there was an opening in the lane you wanted to go in at the time you turned, but that opening was filled with cars turning right before the light changed.

Example 2: You are the first car at the intersection when the light turns green. Cars on the other side of the intersection are backed up to the intersection. You enter the intersection and get stuck there because the cars in front of you do not move before the light turned red. VIOLATION because it was not clear when you entered that you could exit.

You CANNOT be in "the box" after the light changes, period.

Emergency equipment cannot be blocked by some asshole who is selfish enough to put lives in peril.

They should make it a 6 point ticket with a $500.00 fine

THE WORST intersection is afternoons is Main Street and RT 123 in Fairfax City.
Can't tell if it's the city or county that can't figure out how to time the lights? But going south on 123 is ALWAYS blocked by vehicles going west on Main Street (236) from poorly timed traffic lights.

I hope they have some decent soundproofing in the Bank of America from all the car horns they hear every day.

City is aware and makes money off it with cops just sitting there.

Someone should put a webcam there to show the idiocy.

They could make a shitload of money at Rt123 and Lewinsville with a fucking police station at the intersection, but they don't. People turning from NB 123 onto Lewinsville consistently block southbound Rt123 traffic in the afternoon/evening. Ridiculous.

Yes, I’ve always wondered why that whole area is so fucked up with people blocking the box and the police station is next door and they do nothing.

^This. Dumbasses blocking Rt123 should be executed for their stupidity.

While we are at it, let's go after Metro, Fairfax Connector and the like for putting bus stops at intersections. It is bad enough when the step is located right before the intersection, but when the stop is right afterwards a driver could easily follow a bus into the intersection and then find himself stuck there because the bus suddenly stops right afterwards.

When the right turning lane allows buses to go straight and it's a red light.
