Metro - "We Dare You To Ride"

A team of independent safety inspectors was nearly hit last month by a Metro train that appeared to be traveling at full speed and making no attempt to slow, as required by agency rules.

The inspectors "experienced a near-miss situation" and "were forced to quickly scramble out of the way to avoid being struck," according to a report released late Wednesday by the Tri-State Oversight Committee, which monitors safety at Metro. No one was injured.

That's what I always thought. A near-hit implies that you almost hit, but didn't. A near-miss should mean the opposite.

I was gonna post this in the other thread earlier but saw no one responded to my last update.

The irony here is pretty funny. You know you got problems when your safety inspectors are experiencing the mortal terror of getting hit by a train.

The article also seemed to emphasize that this train was travelling "full speed". Does that make a difference? Is there anything different when you're hit by a train doing 59 miles an hour instead one doing 40?

I think it's even worse that they were independent safety inspectors. It doesn't sound like Metro trying to kill their own people this time.

Metro Knife Vortex Closed Pending Safety Investigation

ARLINGTON, VA—By the order of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, the Orange Line's Rotating Vortex Of Sharp Knives metro project was temporarily closed Monday. "Until we deem that this whirling knife vortex fully complies with all state and federal safety regulations, we unfortunately have no choice but to shut it down," WMATA spokesman James Fenten said. Metro employees are angry. "Closing the vortex is costing dozens of workers their paychecks," project supervisor Carl Blaine said. "It's costing the system $100,000 every day it's down. The Orange Line needs a gigantic, funnel-like chasm with whirling, razor-sharp steel blades protruding from all sides, and it needs it now."

For the time being word on the street says Metro is sub-contracting the work to be done by unskilled illegal immigrants with a road-side wood-chipper untill funding is approved.

That was a long lasting crash! The train must have been going 200mph for the crash to last .46 seconds.

What? No explosion at the end? Everyone knows that whenever a car runs off a cliff, gets shot at or hits another car it explodes. Luckily for you, I think the guy that usually has a briefcase full of nitro glycerin missed the train that day.

WASHINGTON - Metro General Manager John Catoe says he will resign from his position, effective April 2.

Catoe did not cite a specific reason to resign and says he was not pressured into leaving from the board of directors.

He says he came to the conclusion to resign last week.

Catoe made the announcement a Metro Board meeting on Thursday afternoon.

"Good leaders should know how to implement change, and great leaders should know when it is time for a leadership change. I do hope I fall into that latter category," Catoe told the Metro Board.

Catoe told the board he felt he was hurting Metro more than he was helping the transit agency. YA THINK?!!?

Two killed by construction equipment. I mean really? With all the road construction that goes on around here, you never hear about workers being killed. Metro must have some kind of hex on it.

I bet that's why Catoe is resigning, he's fleeing for his life!

People wondered why the leader of Metro is resigning at the end of February. Umm no kidding...

Metro General Manager John Catoe submitted his resignation Thursday, after months of deadly accidents and safety missteps that he said had "created an unhealthy distraction" for the agency.

Catoe said he had become the face of the organization and the face of some of those distractions. "It is with a heavy heart, but it's time for me to face new directions," he told the board of directors.

He said he made his decision last week, just before his new three-year contract was to begin. Directors said they learned of his decision Thursday morning before a regularly scheduled board meeting. He will leave April 2.

"We are disappointed we have to face this challenge," Chairman Jim Graham said. "This is a decision he's made."

I think the Metro drivers should start painting emblems on the vehicles to show how many kills each one has gotten, like pilots used to do in WWII. They could paint a wrench for every track worker and a guy in a suit for every passenger they kill.

FYI _ "Near Miss" is a OSHA term.

Near Miss:
An unplanned event that did not result in injury, illness, or damage, but had the potential to do so.

Now that we have THAT straight....

There were huge lines for Metro during rush hour this morning. So long that Metro was actually making people wait outside of the Metro stations over fears the platforms were going to become too over-crowded. If NTSB shuts down one of the red line tracks to do its investigation, there is going to be a fucking riot at rush hour this evening.

Drive a car, sit in traffic for a little bit, get to work a little late -or- stand outside in the freezing cold to take the metro, get on the metro eventually, crash before you get to work, die. Significant lunchtime delays on Red Line likely - Red Line still single tracking from Farragut North to Gallery Place due to a small track fire at Metro Center station earlier.

It's the metro we're talking about here. They find bodies all the time.

I remember one night on the metro, a slew of drunk and (seemingly) underage girls who were on a rugby team from New York, asked me the best places to go in the DC area. Because they had got on my last nerve with their screaming and chanting and blatant drinking beer ON the metro, I proceeded to tell them that the Anicostia and Trinidad stops have AWESOME bars to hit up; lots of places for chicks to dance and party. Just get out and keep walking south. When they all got off at the L'Effant stop to transfer to the Green line, the whole car clapped.

God willing, they met Nino Brown hisself.

There is no "Trinidad" stop, the only one close is NY Avenue. And if they got off at NY Avenue and walked south, they'd be at Union Station.

Also, there's really not much around Anacostia station, a church, the highway, and some apartment buildings. So even if they got off there, most normal people would realize they're in the middle of a crappy neighborhood and just leave.

Man found dead at Red Line Metro station

http://www.wtop.com/?nid=598&sid=1991197

They found a dead guy on the tracks at Grosvener. It said he didn't get hit by a train. I wonder if he got zapped by the third rail?

It's not the volts that get ya, it's the amps.

Static electricity shocks can be in the hundreds or thousands of volts, but the flow of current (amps) is so low it just stings you instead of killing you.

No shit. Not only that, but they've already destroyed what little tranquility the Toll Road had left (There's no more trees or grassy median, only a giant line of concrete and cement where the train will go). Also, the construction is stupid as hell. For starters, Tysons Corner resides upon a natural hill, and they could've easily tunneled underneath it. Instead, they decided to further fuck up the already congested place, and they now purposely want to prevent people from driving there anymore. On top of that, the current construction phase will stop at Wiehle Avenue in Reston, meanwhile, Reston Pkwy., which is only a few miles West will have to wait years before it reaches there (IF it even does).

These idiots are envisioning a plan where Tysons Corner will have 100,000 residents (Five times the current population), and Reston will double its current size to well over 120,000 residents. The politicians are screwing the whole area up, and they want to build a bunch of high-rises OVER the actual Toll-Road itself (They want to tear down every shopping center in Reston, and reconstruct it to have high-rise apartments, with little shops in the bottoms. They want more housing projects too).

duuuuuuude. you have no idea how much more time and money it would cost to tunnel underneath. sure, the premise is simple but the engineering and research to make it happen is not.

Run a gawd awful expensive tunnel under Tysons, or destroy the area with elevated tracks that will create more operational once it is put into operation...and we wonder why Metro is so messed up. Did it occur to anyone that there was another alternative. Rather than run Metro on a round about route simply to serve the Tysons area poorly Metro could have been innovative and let the route to its natural way on to Reston and Dulles, and then connected the entire Tysons are with a light rail system that could serve the various parts of Tysons much better than either the tunnel route or the elevated route. You could even go cheaper and forgo the light rail and simply run free shuttle bus service.

Metrorail may capture a portion of the traffic moving to and from Tysons from other points on its system, but because it cannot provide adequate service to the entire Tysons area, much of the local traffic and even a fair amount of traffic originating at other points along Metrorail will continue to use cars. Light rail or a major free shuttle bus service could provide much better local service than Metrorail will.

Of course what should we expect from a system that would decide to offer free rides on a weekend to lure more traffic, and then choose to perform massive maintenance work on that same weekend resulting in major delays.

They actually are tunneling underneath the hill in Tysons Corner. There's going to be a station along 123 next to the Galleria. From there the tracks will go underground, beneath International Drive, tunneling under the hill where the big radio tower and Clyde's are, and then popping back above ground when it gets to Route 7.

The big issue about the tunnel was that people wanted the entire length thru Tysons to be below-ground. Majorly expensive to do that. But as far as the hill, they're tunneling right thru it. You can sorta of see where they're doing it in one of the pics I posted yesterday.
