Raymond McGavin missing after 6/18 U2 concert; didn't make it home to Springfield

WASHINGTON — The parents of a Gonzaga College High School graduate are desperately searching for their son after he went missing early Monday.
Raymond McGavin, 19, disappeared after attending a U2 concert at Capital One Arena. McGavin’s father, Travis McGavin, said his son missed the last Metro train out of D.C. and originally texted a friend about staying at the friend’s home.

Moments later, his dad said McGavin texted that same friend back, telling the friend he found a way home.

The last the family saw of their son’s online activity was a Snapchat video that showed McGavin near some railroad tracks.
“That’s the last we have heard from him. He hasn’t contacted his friends, and he hasn’t contacted his family,” Travis McGavin said.
Fairfax County police confirmed they are searching for the Springfield, Virginia, man, but at this point, he isn’t being considered an endangered adult.

His parents call McGavin’s disappearance suspicious, and said they plan to search for their son and find answers themselves.
The father said it is out of his son’s character to not contact friends and family, and also no activity has been seen on McGavin’s social media or bank accounts.

He is supposed to attend College of William & Mary in the fall.
Travis McGavin has this message to his son if he made the decision to disappear: “Raymond, we love you. We’re never going to stop looking for you. Please come home.”

Sux that his last concert was U2, I took a chick to a show at RFK back in the 90s, so boring. They have a few good songs, but two hours of just U2 made me want to jump from the upper deck.

Unfortunately, this morning the family posted the following:

"Our son is at peace. We are grateful to all who provided their help in locating Raymond. At this time, not all of our family members have been notified, so we would ask for some privacy. We take great comfort in knowing how much Raymond was loved and how so many in his and our lives provided assistance, love and care. Please keep us, particularly our other sons, in your prayers."

Did they find him? If he ran away that was his choice and maybe he will change his mind and come back. He has pretty hair, did he transition to female? If he is at peace with it, that's great.

According to WTOP, "Nothing has yet been confirmed by police. This is a developing story."

McGavin is 6-feet-4-inches tall and weighs 175 pounds. He has brown eyes and brown hair. He was last seen wearing gray shirt, dark gray jeans and brown dress shoes.

He was last seen leaving the concert, which was held at Capital One Arena on June 17. His family tells FOX 5 he missed the last Metro train to Springfield, where he lives with his family, but texted a friend at 11:32 p.m. to say he had “found a way home."

McGavin posted a video of himself walking along train tracks on Snapchat at about 1 a.m. Monday, but there was no indication of where he was.

It shouldn't take more than an hour and a half to walk from DC to Springfield along the train tracks. Has anyone checked Lake Accotink? There have been several days of commuter trains, so if he had become disabled someone would have seen him, unless he fell off the bridge. Or did he get drunk and is peacefully sleeping it off?

There are only so many reasons that you would need DNA to ID. Guessing he was hit by a train? Even in water for a few days I would think that he could be identified, dunno.

How many trains use those tracks after 1:00 am? He was actually making pretty good time to get from the venue to Springfield in 1.5 hours. It's about 15 miles via the tracks, which averages to a 6 minute mile.

Why is it the police always say "no foul play is suspected" when a body turns up or is dumped somewhere? Are they just lazy? For example Colton West just turned up dead on a sidewalk and there is still no cause of death and no arrests. Disgraceful.

He was on the tracks at 1:00 am, and he was found in Springfield. He was tall and skinny and probably in decent enough shape to jog a 6 minute mile pace down the tracks from DC. The pics or video he took with his phone would have had GPS coordinates so the police should know how far he got and by what time.

The major question is what was the cause of death and who did it? The police never figured out who killed Colton West and how, so hopefully they do a better investigation for this Raymond.

A 6 minute mile would be a full out run. And he would have been running next to railroad tracks and even recording himself at some point.

He wasn't running. He took a picture of himself on the tracks around 1am.

Very strange circumstances. First, if he missed the train, why not call his parents, an Uber, taxi, etc? What made him think it was normal or wise to walk home from DC via train tracks? Second, if they called police Monday, why did they brush it off so quickly even if he is an adult? There seemed to be sufficient reasons to be concerned and they didn’t even find a body until Friday. It’s just all very strange. His parents seem pretty well known in the community and Money is being raised for their expenses.

In the dark, on a trail, without running shoes, his pace was almost certainly slower than a 6 min mile. If he was doing an 8 minute mile for example he would only have covered 11 miles by 1:00 when he took the photo, which would put him somewhere in Alexandria. The photo itself would likely contain the exact coordinates where it was taken and at what time, and the same information could be derived from phone company records.

It is very suspicious that he was missing for 4 days and the police were unable to locate him by cell phone signal. Unless he powered off his phone (unlikely for a teenager) it would have been continuously transmitting its GPS location to the nearest cell tower. Even if he turned off the phone, its last location would be known within a few feet. It is very odd that after four days another corpse suddenly pops up in Springfield and the police say there is no foul play. The story simply does not hold up to scrutiny.

verifiable facts:
-was in DC at 11:32 pm
-stated he was coming home to Springfield
-took a video at 1:00 am on railroad tracks
-found dead 4 days later in Springfield
-approximate walking distance 15 miles from concert to Springfield
-deceased appeared to be in good physical condition, but not wearing running shoes

verifiable but unreleased facts:
-exact time and location where video was taken
-location body was found
-location records for cell phone between 11:32 and four days later when body was found (unless phone was powered off).

Need to determine:
-cause of death
-where was body being stored for the past 4 days?
-why was his cell phone not locatable for the past 4 days?

Another odd thing noticed was he was 19 years old, a 2017 high school graduate, and was scheduled to start Wm & Mary in the fall. What has he been doing for the past year?

Still need the train schedule for the night he disappeared, in case he was hit by a train and his cellphone damaged in the collision.

Bodies do not just hang around railroad tracks for 4 days without anyone noticing. They start to smell and attract buzzards. If he died on the tracks, it's odd that with 4 days of commuter trains going back and forth, no one noticed an arm, leg, head, or any other body parts strewn about the tracks.

There are some small bridges along the way just north of backlick that he could have been knocked off. Or even jumped for a train or fallen off and hit his head. Not knowing where he was found leaves tons of speculation

His is so sad. I remember driving to the big city to see U2 when I was 17. Met up with a friend in the parking lot who came from another city and we saw the concert together. Went our separate ways afterwards. Way before cell phones and GPS were around. At that age we never thought something could happen, and thankfully nothing did.

Hope the details of this incident are released.

One of the news sites said he was found in Springfield not far from home. Obviously they knew his last known location on the tracks, so if he was hit by a train or knocked off a bridge, even if his phone was broken in the impact it would have reported its last location.

We don't have to triangulate towers anymore as phones report their actual GPS coordinates -- it's very accurate.

The location date is why this whole story does not add up.

If it was powered on it would be transmitting its location and could be traced. If it was powered off, the police would have known the exact location where that happened, likely the scene of a fight or scuffle where McGavin was killed (even if his body was moved his body somewhere else). Anyone who was carrying a cellphone in the same location and time would be the killer. This should be an easy case to solve through phone records.

It's called a gap year. Common in Europe not so in North America. The thought is, the student has been in school for the past 13 years of their life. So, you take a year, relax, collect yourself and then press on to higher education the following fall. It's frequently used by AP students or other high achievers and or students born late in the year to allow themselves a chance to age up prior to starting their freshmen year of college.

Also, many elite institutions offer gap year enrollment because they want you to attend but they don't have a spot for you in the coming year so, in your acceptance letter it might say something to the effect of "We are delighted to offer you a position of enrollment in the following fall." Most students don't usually opt for that but, if it's your dream school why not wait a year?

I went to high school with Ray, knew him decently well. He was a really smart, kind guy and very talented with his guitar. Unfortunately he was also very much a fan of drugs and alcohol. I wasn't at the concert with him but I heard people who had talked to him over text that night before this had all happened that he was very drunk. Could have caused him to not call an Uber or get lost. I'd say probably not murder, more likely OD or suicide. Such a nice and well rounded guy unfortunately had some problems with his mental health.

Heroin is so pervasive as is cocaine.
If youre 18, you may have been doing these controlled deadly substances for 8yrs maybe.
Plus, William & Mary is a second tier school.

He would be their angel of a son, no matter his manner of death, especially since it was untimely. I don't know this family at all but we can at least be kind as we all know parents do not stop loving their kids, despite their flaws, choices and circumstances of death. May his soul rest in peace and the family receive peace and grace to deal with their son's passing.

Seriously, the guy was going to William and Mary in the fall. He had a lot going for him and a lot of people who loved and cared about him.

We don't know what happened to him and it is really not his grieving family's job to issue a news statement describing what happened. If it was the public's business the police would have said something by now. Clearly it is not the public's business. May he RIP.

Fair point.

But let's be real here.

If this guy was not white, you would not give a fuck about him.

Heroin addicts are in all walks of life, just like there are "professional alcoholics"/ "functioning alcoholics". No matter the drug of choice, there are people that can handle their drugs and still function in every day life. Not every drug user is a poor bum in the gutter or a minority person, the way media likes to present it as. I personally know of a WHITE executive-suite person who worked with me in a Fortune 100 company, nodding off at meetings. Of course they "sent him on vacation" (to company-sponsored rehab) and when he came back he still had his job....whereas the black man who worked with us but in a junior position got caught coming back from lunch a little too tipsy and he was promptly fired.

Like i said- the way you all see it- whites are angels and can do no wrong, even when getting caught wrong they deny it ever happened and even if it did they apologize and get second, third, fifth chances to fix it- but a minority is immediately condemned and thought the worst of. Even if the minority was going to william and mary and working a full time job- "oh wait he got caught with a little pot let's fuck up his life so he can never work again" white kid caught with pot "cops look the other way".

RIP Ray. Hope you enjoyed your privileged life you made it this far...

Soapbox rant OFF.

Speak for yourself. I grew up in Springfield, my children have grown up in Springfield and I would feel this way about this kid and this family regardless of skin color. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance were pretty scary. Now that he's been found and the police are releasing no further details I think it's safe to assume that it is not the public's business.

When that teenager girl was killed by the gang in Accotink, that was pretty horrifying and that was murder. Anyone who assumes that this isn't their problem because it was "gang related" is an idiot. Anyone who assumes that their own kid might not meet and talk to gang members is an idiot.

Springfield is the same boring place now that it was when I was a kid. Seriously. There are very few things in Springfield today that weren't there way back in the 70's/80's. Even the so called "bad" areas are not that bad.

There are definitely more whiners out there now. That has been the big change in Springfield. But even the whining is way worse elsewhere. Be grateful.

When Jack Herrity was in charge, Springfield was a place that families could thrive. Through forced globalism by Ffx County Public Schools, the greatness has eroded...
Springfield proper(backlick rd) slowly started to change with mass incoming Central Americans.
Then, West Springfield was nice(Bruce tyburski had hair back then), and families thrived.
Around 2002, West Springfield changed for the worst.
Look at the drug overdoses in cardinal forest, the transvestites and Springfield pet store murderer-allllll West Springfield.
I miss Jack Herrity.
I miss Dave Albo.
Fuck bulova and Connelly.
Typical democrats running a Tamany Hall for ms13.
Give them food and clothes and a place to live=votes!

If he was drunk, maybe walking home to sober up seemed like a good idea (he lived with his family). Seems likely that he was hit by a train given that he Snapchatted walking alone on tracks.

If the police had been willing to request/review video and Uber records sooner, he likely would have been found earlier in the week.

The family will be holding a memorial service in July.

Poster above who went to Gonzaga, it looks like he transferred in from The Heights School? Was his using the reason he delayed college for a year? It seems his parents may have known he had issues, is that right?

Very sad, RIP.

Parents coulda just sent his junkie ass to west Springfield hs to maintain his heroin habit. Plenty of heroin there. They woulda saved big $$$$$ vs. costly tuition at Gonzaga.

It's very strange he was missing for four days. Obviously if he was taking photos with his phone, his last known location was transmitted and the police could have easily found him if it was an accidental death or suicide. Something else was going on here. Was this another case of bodies being sequestered away and then mysteriously dumped in plain view like Colton West?

That was exactly what I had thought of. It was after a day of intense media interest that he was suddenly found. Although, with DNA needed for a definite identification, it does suggest something like being hit by a train. Even if he was in water for a few days, you could still make a visual ID. Super sad end to a far too short life.

His favorite movie before shooting up?
“Stand by Me.”
He wanted to be the fat kid that runs across the train bridge at accotink.
That fatso is now married to Rebecca romijn.
Heroin is one helluva drug!

Remember that a train moving at a fast pace can land someone pretty far away from the tracks.

I commute along those tracks and there are so many areas along the tracks with deep gullies, tall grass and thick brush.

Was he listening to loud music using his ear buds?
That could have done it, especially if he was still under the influence.

Also, remember that poor girl in Burke who was walking along the tracks?
A rock on the tracks was projected through the air and hit her in the head as a train passed by.

Condolences to the McGavin Family.

Raymond Leonard McGavin

Born January 27, 1999, passed away June 18, 2018 near his home in Alexandria, VA. A loyal son and devoted brother, Raymond is survived by his parents, Annemarie (Gilmore) and Travis McGavin; his younger brothers, Sean and Elias; his maternal grandparents, Joan and Leonard Gilmore; his paternal grandparents, Carol and Glenn Giles; his aunts and uncle, Joanie Gilmore, and Heather and Jon Hallett; his great-grandmothers, Joan Ryan and Joanne Dillon Lichty; and his many cousins, great-aunts and uncles, and other family members and friends.

Academically gifted, Raymond attended Gonzaga College High School, graduating in 2017. While at Gonzaga, Raymond participated in Chamber Choir and was a member of the wrestling team. A talented musician and singer, he played bass for the West Potomac Choir Concert. He was the lead guitarist and vocalist for his own band, Civic Duty, which is on the verge of releasing its first album. He was also an excellent writer and published four poems in the Gonzaga literary magazine, "The Phoenix."

But Raymond's most singular quality was his great compassion for all. He set such an exemplary example as a member of his high school's wrestling team that the team named a sportsmanship award after him --- The McGavin Men for Others Award. He performed in multiple fundraisers, including Music for McKenna. As an employee of Chili's, he used his fluency in Spanish to help Spanish-speaking customers. More than one customer would return to tell his supervisor how much they appreciated Raymond's patience and kindness.

About to matriculate at the College of William and Mary in the fall, Raymond was on the cusp of a brilliant future. And the beauty of his humble, poetic soul lives on.

Raymond's memorial service will be held at St. Aloysius Church, 19 Eye St. NW, Washington, DC 20001 on Wednesday, July 11 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the ConnerStrong Foundation at http://www.connerstrongfoundation.org/ or the Gonzaga Scholarship Fund, 19 Eye St. NW, Washington, DC 20001.
