Illegal fireworks? you must be a terrorist! heh heh heh. i swear the only reason that va cant have most fireworks is that the cops are afraid people would use them as weapons against them(the cops) considering that the cops in this area are asshats.

in some cases I agree with fireworks bans, they are just no good in heavily wooded areas in summer, but this area isn't that so I never understood it here

I want to mention again that the former elected sheriff of fairfax, carl peed, used to blow off illegal fireworks all the time, and they would land on neighbor's roofs, and he didn't give a fuck.

so if he's allowed to do it, then it's an unenforced law as far as I am concerned and nobody should be charged with it.

www.fireworksexpress.com - you can purchase these fireworks online and then go to the showroom to pick them up (they are discounted this way), or you can just drive up to one of the listed showrooms and purchase them.

Nitro Fireworks in Elkton Maryland - about an hour and a half from Tysons Corner has an excellent selection of rockets, firecrackers, mortars, etc... and is buy one get one free/ buy one get one half off on most everything including assortments.

All the stands appear to be BOGO. To me this means that they doubled the price on everything (or at least an 85% markup), and then did a BOGO just to move volume.

Who has ever been dumb enough to sit around and wait 20 minutes or more after you've lit them off to find out?

Really. 5 or 10 minutes of fireworks are more than enough for a private home fireworks display. Then just go back inside or back to your barbeque, and when the cops come by 20 minutes later, just say "I called you guys 20 minutes ago. The kids that were lighting off fireworks are long gone now!!"

I used to know Sheriff Peed personally, and I never heard that story. Regardless though, he was a cool LEO.

Or choose to live in an understanding neighborhood like I do, where no one is going to rat on your Fireworks on New Years and Independence Day. LOL, we used to even have Fireworks Battles on my block.

Unfortunately, you really can't "choose", you just have to be lucky enough to have ended up living in one. Unless your real estate agent was able to select neigborhoods based on that critera or something.

But yeah, most places just tolerate it. Even my elderly parents, who do get annoyed when it happens really late at night, wouldn't ever think of calling the police. Yet the youngish family living next door to them call the police every time they hear a firework.

My neighborhood seems to be a little more tolerant, as long as it doesn't go on all night and isn't excessively obnoxious and loud.

The people that call the cops over fireworks should spend new years in any german city. 3 days of constant explosions. Germans love firecrackers that are the size of a small child's fist, the sort that can blow up mailboxes, and they love to buy massive quantities of them and light them off all day and all night until they run out. One year, I went out on new years day, really early, and the main shopping street of the city I was in was littered with fireworks paper bits and every cigarette machine and post box and anything else mounted to a wall or a steel post had been blown to bits. And All of this occurred the night before under the watchful eyes of the rather unimpressed and unconcerned Polizei.

Carl is an admirable man in many ways, and a man of dignity who more or less possesses integrity on the major things, so no wonder he would never tell you how he lit off illegal mortars etc....

I lived on the same street, directly across, for 15 years until he moved to that big house off bennett. The guy was like a father to me in some ways, taught me how to catch a baseball and other crap like that (he also was the go-to guy for enforcing extralegal order on the court). But I also saw his fireworks personally, saw them land on the roofs, and I thought it was pretty funny.

Must not be solely a German thing, then.

Yeah, these are way bigger than M80s, these are practically sticks of dynamite.

Do the Italians like to set them off in every object with a receptacle of some sort (vending machines, postal boxes, gutter downspouts, etc) like the Germans do? The level of destruction versus the amount of police concern and action is striking. Here in "the land of the free" the iron fist of the state slams down on anyone doing anything slightly bad, while over there the police often stand by and watch and just figure "hey, it's one night a year, and we did it when we were younger anyway".

I was on the top floor of my hotel watching and people were hitting cars almost all the cars alarms were going off. When we went out you would have firecrackers going off less then 2 feet from you every 10 seconds.

Yeah, when you really think about it, we Americans are reall pussies when it comes to this sort of thing. Calling the cops on each other, and shit.

Here, Berliners are celebrating an event where you replace one 12 month calendar with another, while in America, people call the cops on people celebrating the independence of their nation, the creation of a nation that supposedly stands on liberty and freedom as virtues. Sorta contradictory.

That video was cool to watch. Neat that they can just set off fireworks like that and the police don't care... you even have large crowds to check out the action.

They set off rockets like that with people all over... yet, someone gets hit with a small, slightly hot piece of paper (Vienna) and the lawsuits start flying.

George Carlin said it best: "the kid who swallows too many fucking marbles will just fucking not grow up and have any fucking kids!"

All kids, boy or girl, need to be free to grow up in a natural selection environment. I don't mean that in a cruel way, but if you coddle and protect your kids to a certain point, they will become 16 at some point, and look at you like you're crazy for telling them to keep their eyes on the road. They'll go off for a drive and then decide that they can take a walk into the back of the SUV to look for the bottled water that rolled away from them or for their iPod, or whatever, having no concept of danger or consequences.

If you raise your kids in a home version of an ICU, they're going to grow up to be brittle, vulnerable and prone to injury and illness.

Kids need to learn through their mistakes at the age when their mistakes don't kill them. A 5 or 6 year old how falls out of a tree and gets a concussion is going to go on to live a long and healthy life. An adult who gets a concussion at 25, or 30, or 50, is probably going to die or have health problems. I kid that learns that fire burns will heal quickly. An adult that gets burned probably won't.

Kids are designed to get "beat up" by life's experiences. That's how they learn not to get beat to death by life in their less "elastic" adult years.

Stage managing parents are doing their kids real harm, and they actually believe they are only doing the best and right thing for them. It's their own neuroticism, not the child's welfare they are acting on.
