ATL75, I don't recommend seeking treatment for mental or emotional problems by presuming you know what treatment you need. You wouldn't go to the hospital with chest pains and tell them what's wrong or what they need to do to treat you, would you?

If you go to a hypnotherapist with the idea of "hypnotherapy will fix my depression," it will because you want it to. You'll spend a lot of money on your hypnotherapy, but it will only address your symptoms, not the cause of your depression.

Similarly, I don't recommend that you or anyone tries to get on medication. Your body is a highly complicated machine that yes, occasionally needs a pharmaceutical tune-up. But putting that stuff in your body if you don't need it can't be good. Again, if you don't need them, the pills will only work because you want them to, but the real problem will linger.

Schedule an appointment with a psychiatrist, tell him the problem, and let him treat you appropriately. Good luck.

Let me know how that hypnosis works. I've always been skeptical of it and kind of want to see if I could be hypnotized...

Even if hypnotism were beneficial, it probably wouldn't work for me. I doubt I'm hypnotizable.

Thank you for the response, MrMephisto. You raise a good point, but allow me to provide a little more context.

I have sought out counseling before and took the antidepressant that was prescribed for me for six months. The medication gradually dialed down all of my emotions, and they they remain in the same muted state years after the fact. I am looking for a way to normalize this, and as hypnosis has proven to be very effective on me in the past (at least in a recreational setting), I thought that I would look into it. Ultimately, I would like to learn the name of a good local counselor who has experience with hypnosis and could take a holistic approach to my issue.

I appreciate the feedback.
