You may be conflating the murder of Joe Robles with someone else.
Joseph A. Robles was the only National Merit Scholar in the Robert E. Lee High School class of 1989, but had passed up a full scholarship to Virginia Tech to pursue his dream of becoming a drug dealer.
On October 12, 1994, Robles was shot at his house at 7208 Neuman Street in Springfield by Lamore S. Rowe during a botched rip-off. While he was initially expected to survive his wounds, Robles took a turn for the worse and died in a Texas hospital on November 25.
After two mistrials and a hung jury, Rowe entered an Alford plea to second-degree murder on December 7, 1999, and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Joe was the son of Josue Robles, a former Army major general who eventually became president and chief executive officer of USAA in 2007 and retired in 2015.
