Anyone remember William Crocker (Robinson HS, murdered)
Posted by: life ()
Date: December 31, 2009 06:27PM

Bennefield and Kelly are getting released in the Spring after completing their 20 yr. sentences, wonder what life will be like for them?

"Elmer C. Bennefield and Frank D. Kelly were convicted of
murder, abduction, and use of a firearm in the commission of a
felony. On appeal, they contend that their retrial was barred by
the double jeopardy clauses of the United States and the Virginia
Constitutions. We disagree and affirm their convictions.
BACKGROUND
During the late hours of July 30, 1993, four high school
friends, Ryan Quinn, Jason McCree, Jacob Barnhart, and William
Crocker (the Crocker group), attempted to purchase marijuana from
Kelly, Bennefield and Rick Herring (the Kelly group). The
Crocker group gave the Kelly group one hundred fifty dollars, and
they followed the Kelly group by car to a restaurant. The Kelly
group travelled together in one car, and the Crocker group
followed in Crocker's car. The Kelly group joined with another
group (the Karim group) at the restaurant, and the Karim group,
in a third car, followed the Kelly and Crocker groups to a motel.
Someone in the Kelly group told the Crocker group that a man had
taken the drug purchase money and fled without delivering the
marijuana. On the pretext of finding the person who had taken
the money, the Crocker group followed the cars carrying the Kelly
and Karim groups to a deserted construction site. At the
construction site, members of the Kelly and Karim groups pointed
guns at the Crocker group members and ordered them to lie on the
ground. The Kelly and Karim group members shot three members of
the Crocker group, injuring Quinn and McCree and killing Crocker.
Barnhart fled, uninjured."

I remember when this happened. I was a junior at a neighboring high school. Some of my friends actually attended Crocker's funeral. Apparently they played sports with him growing up. Very sad, but apparently the guy was total trouble. Really got mixed up with a bunch of f'ing idiotjerks.

You wonder what life will be like for them?

EXPENSIVE.

The cost of living in this area has gone up considerably since then.

I remember Willie Crocker. He was a year ahead of me at Robinson. I really hate to say this considering what happened to him, but I remember him being a real asshole. Kind of guy who would pick on you and piss you off to show off for his friends. No one deserves to get killed, but after that happened I remember everyone at school (when it started back up--he was killed over the summer)talking him up like he was some hero. I always thought that was stupid--He was trying to buy drugs and the deal went sour. I couldn't understand why people never talked about the negative side of what he was doing when he died. Having said that, sorry to speak ill of the dead. I wouldn't have wished that on him, I just wouldn't have sung his praises either.

What ever happened to the investigation of the death of Paul Jahoda, the kid who was found stuffed up a pipe back in the late 1960s?

Three threads asking about young Paul Jahoda here on FFU and no answers. A quick search of my internet found:

Consider now the case of Paul Jahoda, also age 15, who resided here in the Washington metropolitan area.

Paul Jahoda's body was found May 7 inside a large storm sewer in the affluent Fairfax subdivision of Mantua. To the Fairfax County medical examiner,
Paul Jahoda was a suicide who had taken an overdose of sleeping pills following a fight with his father.

To the police the death appeared to be a mystery, probably an accident. To Joseph Jahoda, his only son was "a victim of the times."

Whatever the cause of bis death. Paul was a lonely introverted boy who was learning to play the guitar. Schoolmates recounted that he used to "try out" drugs that others brought to school to "see if he could get a high without getting sick . . ."

"He would take the pills they gave him, and if he didn't get sick, and got a high,
then they'd know it was okay. Paul said it was all right to do because it hadn't hurt him."

Another friend recalls: "He really liked the high he got from being drunk more than any other high. But when his father ended his drinking. Paul took up drugs because he could get them into the house without being caught.

I'm sure I bummed a smoke off of Willy once in the bathroom.

I once put a glob of ink on Ricky Herring's desk and ruined his 100 sweater.

I once attended a court school with Frank Kelly and even went on a ride with him in his vehicle.

All this before the murders of course and I was very suprised this happened. I knew these kids were screwed up and I was too back then but it's hard to predict a persons nature.

RIP Crocker and thanks for the cig.

Im not sure why I was thinking about his today? It has crossed my mind over over the years probably because I was just 15 when it happened. Stuff like that just didn't happen in that area and it was very tragic. I was trying to remember details of what had happened and what the convictions ended up being? I thought that it was Ricky Herring that was the shooter? On here it says that Khalid Karim's verdict was overturned? What was he sentenced to?

Have some respect for the dead. Willy was a good kid, he struggled w ADHD. He was no more messed up than the rest of us. He was spoken of as a hero because he was nice to his friends and loyal. He may pick on you in English but he had your back at McD's. What happened to him could have been any one of us.

Lol, you think inflation more than tripled in 18 years? I think you're confusing median home prices in NoVa with consumer price index.

Roughly 74% on all goods since 1993. So 150 then is like 261 now. Sure as hell not worth a life.

This makes me wonder how much pot $150 was back then. I don't know if you can rely on ordinary inflation prices for marijuana.

Yeah you have to be pretty messed up to think it's worth killing people over $261 (not that I think it's OK to kill people over larger sums). I mean, what are you going to do to make a living - kill 2 people every work day?

I remember this real well. I went to a neighboring school and was in the same grade. Leon was actually a class mate. Definitely the type of guy you'd think might be involved in somethin like this. Rumor was that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was a key in testifying against the others.

Rumors were that the survivors were told to bite the curb. Anyone know if this is true?

It was for 1 oz. That was about what you would expect to pay for crappy, over priced weed back then. I actually have no idea what it goes for now but that was probably an average price if you didn't have a good connection and if you were buying from strangers, you didn't.

This was a very sad episode. I went to a neigboring high school and was in the same grade. A number of my friends knew Willie from when he was a kid having gone to grade school with him. As sad as everyone was, I think people all agreed that Wille was trouble with a capital T. He was hanging out with some super shady dudes, buying drugs from the wrong kinds of folks (nobody should have anything to do with Frank back then) and was playing a stupid, dangerous game. I think all my friends were involved in shadiness back then (it was more the norm than it is now), but they knew where to draw the line, unlike these thugs and Justin Wolf.

I went to school with Willy from the 5th grade on. I knew him pretty well -- that whole thing shook us all. He was a wild kid with a big heart -- definitely misunderstood because he kind of had that "don't give a shit" attitude. He was far from a thug or trouble -- not even close. I still see his parents from time to time in Fairfax -- even to this day they don't look the same as before the murder....sad really. I don't think anyone made him out to be a hero -- he was simply something tragic that really did not occur in our area so it was a huge deal -- and the circumstances around it made it harder to swallow.

He didn't know Frank or Elmo or Ricky for that matter -- he was hanging out with some guys from summer school and one of them (not naming names) knew the killers well and went to buy the weed from them. Willy was just driving the car and this guy asked Willy to keep following them so they could get the weed. He had no clue who he was dealing with - but even so, would anyone have expected this?

I knew Leon pretty well and one of my best friends was on the same soccer team and really good friends with 2 of the survivors.

It seemed like Leon was in the wrong place at the wrong time and had some bad friends. I think I've seen that he's friended some of our classmates on facebook and seems to be trying to make a life for himself.

I remember this was the first time I heard about "curbing" then I saw it on American History X and I was like, holy shit!

It was over an ounce of weed. William's crew showed up, no weed, they killed him for the money. I remember that at the time an ounce wasn't so crazy (although back then, it was always mexican brick crap!). That was a standard deal (albeit expensive) and I couldn't believe someone got killed over that. It wasn't so crazy to deal a QP without major concerns so how on earth did this happen?

It was also Menace to Society and Boys in the Hood days. People were tring to be gangsters and it cost a young kid his life. Stupid.

I remember this really clearly. I had known Willy for a long time. We were good friends when we were younger but had gone separate ways. He used to jump his car, maybe a t-bird back on this hill on Chapel Road.

I think it was Frank Kelly who lived in the last house in Fairfax Club Estates. I remember seeing the cops at his house and hearing he had been arrested.

Quinn was never the same. He came back to school but the bullet to the head had slowed him down considerably. I think I remember hearing they had never removed the bullet.

Did the Post ever do a comprehensive article about this?

I remember this incident very clearly. Willy was a year younger than me and Frank and Ricky were in my graduating class. Elmo was one year older. I had spoken with Willy very recently before he got killed. In fairness, I remember him being a bit of an arrogant prick (even for a rich high school kid), but he was a good guy and I liked him well enough. Frank was a good friend of mine in middle school and was a nice suburban kid. Ricky Herring always seemed a little "slow", and was a wanna be wigger, which is the most pathetic type of wigger there is.

I remember this incident creating an undercurrent of racism among many of the people who knew Willy. It was an extrodinarlily violent time in our history. This time was hard on suburban black kids (I'm one so I can testify.) Being "hard" was an important concept to more ghetto black men and many privledged suburban kids tried to emulate them. I think this was what was ultimately behind the murder, more than the money. I remember Frank being a pretty cool laid back guy when we were younger, then suddenly he became "hard." Extremely sad and a waste of life beyond comprehension.

get scammed? go somewhere else, that easy. get money back if you can but likely not worth it

not that i liked the crowd i stayed away from it

NOT NORMAL. something is wrong with all the story above.

"Khalid Karim (shooter) - Guilty by Jury of Murder 1, overturned on appeal” Is this true? Did he get time? It sounds like Rick Herring was sorry for what he did (as indicated by his pleading “guilty”) If the above post is correct and Khalid Karim was the shooter and got no time and Rick got the most time, I have to ask “why?” or “how”? That doesn’t seem just; and who is Big John and what happened to him?

Thinking about this again on the eve of our 20th High School Reunion from Robinson. We've talked about Willie and his influence on our class...a lot. He was the first of us to die and definitely the first of anybody we knew to be murdered in cold blood. A school year ended in the spring of Sophomore year only to find that a classmate had been murdered over the summer before Junior fall.

Willy was in my PE class that year. I didn't like him. He was a dick to the teacher (whose name is on the baseball field) and to his classmates. He was usually out of control (when not skipping) and acted aloof to those that came in contact with him. When he decided to participate in gym activities he would trash talk and start fights.

When he was killed we had a number of forced presentations to attend and a eulogy conducted at the school that was mandatory to all classmates. They played the Tracy Chapman song "Fast Car" which was his themer. He drove a Firebird that could neither chase nor outrun his destiny. Yes...he died over a small amount of weed, but we also heard stories that he had been purposefully lacing bags with oregano which lead to the distrust in his service. He was a kid that wagered high and lost big.

We lost Willie young, however, we also lost several others to a myriad of life altering ordeals (some before/some after graduation)...suicide, car accidents, cancer, etc. We must remember ALL of them in order to help parents, friends and classmates cope with these tragedies.

That makes more sense than $150, selling burn bags to the wrong guys is a good way to get yourself killed.

Willie was the first of many members of the class of 1995 to die. I knew Ryan Quinn before & after the shooting. It was like two different people. Sad.

If drugs weren't illegal things like this would never happened!

Killed over $150.

That makes no sense.

They should have rotted in jail longer.

Fuck "Silly Crocker" and all of you Robinson racist motherfuckers. He was doing wrong just like everyone else in the story. There's a lot more to the story you don't know! Burke was filled with privelaged racist kids back then. That's why all of you feel comfortable saying something on here where you can hide your name. Glad Frank and Elmo got out and are doing good. I'm sure BETTER than all of you on here.

Another thug wigger lifestyle and how it ends. Very unlike Tupac and biggie.
Rumor was that the gun that killed Crocker was held to the side like ice cube does in his music videos.

Went to elem school with ERIC bennefield.....he was embarrassed by the name “Elmer.”
During ages 9-12, he lived in green hills housing projects off rolling road.
Really fucked up because he was talking about robbing the 7-11 near our elem school-Lynbrook.
A real plan, not just some bravado show off shit either.
Some kids were just born bad.

Ironically, in the same neighborhood that the shooting occurred lives a family named ROBLES whose high school aged son answered the door to a shotgun blast.
Murder was never solved.
Father runs USAA, yes, that USAA, as the CEO.
Murdered son attended lee high school and was said to be involved with injection steroids.

You may be conflating the murder of Joe Robles with someone else.

Joseph A. Robles was the only National Merit Scholar in the Robert E. Lee High School class of 1989, but had passed up a full scholarship to Virginia Tech to pursue his dream of becoming a drug dealer.

On October 12, 1994, Robles was shot at his house at 7208 Neuman Street in Springfield by Lamore S. Rowe during a botched rip-off. While he was initially expected to survive his wounds, Robles took a turn for the worse and died in a Texas hospital on November 25.

After two mistrials and a hung jury, Rowe entered an Alford plea to second-degree murder on December 7, 1999, and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Joe was the son of Josue Robles, a former Army major general who eventually became president and chief executive officer of USAA in 2007 and retired in 2015.

I thought about this today. Interesting to see what people are saying all these years later. One incident I remember from junior high school is when Willie stuck a paperclip in a lightswitch which caused sparks to fly out and made his hair stand on end.

As for Willie himself, I remember him being a real dick and I never understood all the glowing eulogies that glossed over the circumstances for his murder. That being said, I wouldn't wish that on anyone, and who knows what kind of person he would have become as he grew up and matured.

I was in class with Ryan Quinn the next year and the wound in his head was clearly visible. I remember him being much quieter and not the asshole than he had been in previous years. I'd like to think that was down to maturity...

On the flip-side of all this, I knew Matt Harper as well. I found him to be a cool and cordial guy, but he ended up getting convicted of killing his sister. You never know what anyone is capable of.

Looking back on those years, the RHS class of '95 was surreal.

About 50 years ago, Jahoda's corpse was sadly discovered by me in a sewer on my way to hunt frogs and tadpoles. I was eight years old growing up in Mantua Hills and still remember being interviewed by a half dozen local reporters as a stretcher fully covering his corpse entered a silent ambulance that had been waiting for a passenger.
