Land sinking around septic tank??
Posted by: Mofo ()

At my parents place for the holidays and noticed that there is a solid square shape that has formed right on top of the septic tank, the land looks to have sunk on top of it in that shape maybe 10 inches deep.

They've never had septic problems but the tank hasn't been pumped since they moved to this house 5 years ago.

Possible causes and solutions for this?? (Other than calling the septic man).

Thanks!

Get the tank pumped. That is supposed to be pumped every 2 years. Just remember, its cheaper than installing a regular sewer

Get it pumped! You don't want a torrential rain storm and have an overflowing septic tank.

Maybe the tank is actually ruptured and needs replacing? This would explain the sinking. Talking to someone who actually knows septic tanks might help. I know, its crazy. But maybe a professionals opinion may be needed here.

If it's an old tank, there's a good chance that this is the answer.

The very expensive answer.

Yes it is.

That sounds about right. How the heck could someone let it go for five years?

By all means find a professional. I have some rural property that has
the same problem and it's worth the money to get it right. Be prepared
to be advised that if you continue to flush paper products down the
toilet that your problems will continue. Instead of toilet paper, use
corn cobs and dispose of them outside on the ground or your problem will
continue. Use red corn cobs to wipe with and the white ones to make sure
it's clean. Even an old and slick Sears catalog will not work. Outhouses
rule and they are "Green".
