Northern Virginia Video Game Arcades

Skyline Mall

Springfield Mall Upstairs and Downstairs

Ballston Mall Lower Level Food Cort

Tysons Corner Center Food Court (Upstairs I think)

Crystal City Underground Shops

Landmark Mall Upper Level Food Court

I used to go to all of those places in the 90s and play Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Nba Jam etc...

Are any of those arcades are still open?

When did they close?

There also used to be a small video game arcade near the Van Dorn metro station as well as a nice selection of video games at the movie theater on RT 1.

Were there any others you can think of?

I have heard the Chuck E Cheese in Alexandria and in Fairfax had a nice selection back in the day but that was before my time. Those games probably sucked anyway.

I own all of the latest video game systems along with an HD projector which can project up to a 25 FT HD image but I will always miss the video game arcades I went to while I was growing up.

I remember calling up Pentagon City once and I demanded that they open a video game arcade there.

The lady on the phone told me "No because it will attract too many teenagers and there will be problems and we dont want that here."

There was a "Time Out", I believe, in downtown Fairfax City. It's an eyeglass place now I think - right next to the power station.

There used to be one WAAAAY back when in the Vienna Magruder's shopping center - like 1983. I played Joust, PacMan and Defender there.

The one in Ballston Commons is still open, I think it's on the upper level though.

Also, the food court at Tysons (before the annex was built) is on the lower level. I've lived near there for thirteen years and don't ever remember an arcade, so it must have closed long ago.

I do remember an arcade being there very recently.
Lots of ravers would hang out there.

I called the mall to ask what happened to it and the lady who answered the phone said in a sarcastic voice "Its not there anymore go somewhere else"

That place is a fucking gold mine. They still have a "Marvel vs. Capcom 2" machine. When I saw it, all I could think was, "they should have sent a poet."

I still play Pac Man. I think Pac Man even had his own cartoon program back in the day.

The one at Ballston Mall used to be on the bottom food court level because I remember a bunch of skaters skateboarding near the elevator doors while they were waiting for the elevator to pick them up.

use a few emulators.

General Emulators:
MAME - arcade games
MESS - tons of consoles (some are poorly emulated)

Specialty emulators:
snes9x - SNES
DGen - Sega Genesis
Yabause - Sega Saturn
mednafen - Atari Lynx, GameBoy (Color), GameBoy Advance, NES, PC Engine(TurboGrafx 16), SuperGrafx, Neo Geo Pocket (Color), PC-FX, and WonderSwan (Color)

Emulators are fun and all, but there's nothing like the experience of dropping a quarter in and playing the machine at the arcade.

A friend of mine bought a fully functioning stand-up arcade game that has about 30 different old-school video games loaded on it. The original game versions, and yes, the machine requires quarters. It's like the fucking coolest thing in the world. Sometimes I'll just hang out there and play Centipede, Dig Dug, and Zaxxon for an hour.

MAME is a great way to play all the old video games. MAME uses the exact same ROM program from the original machine. You can find arcade machines that use MAME and are loaded with over 1000 original arcade games. Or just download MAME and the ROMS and play on you PC.

I also remember 2 arcades at Springfield Mall. One was called SPACEWAY RACEWAY and was much better than TIME OUT.

It was while playing a coin-op game back in the day when I almost got my ass kicked in a race riot when my idiot friend started throwing the N-word around. I was too deep into my Space Duel game (the game on the front of the Who album) to just stop playing and run, and I almost paid the price for it. Fortunately the brawlers didn't make the connection between me and my buddy and the fight spilled outside so I was able to finish a level. Too bad for my friend, but he asked for it.

The only arcade as such that I went to around here was the one at Tysons, in the 90's. I remember they had a helicopter game that was fairly realistic in its controls. Does anyone remember the name of that one? There was also G-LOC, a flying game with a seat that tilted back and forth.

The lower level arcade at Springfield Mall had Run and Gun in it.
Kick ass basketball game.
I am not even that big of a fan of basketball.
But that game was awesome.

So when did they close it?

Why did they close it?

Too many people looking like this hanging out in there made the mall management uncomfortable?

Ballston and Tysons both had Tilts. The Ballston one was at the far end of the basement's food court and the one at Tysons was directly across from Slade's Restaurant on the upper level. Ballston still has an arcade, on the third level, but it is a mere shadow of what Tilt once was.

The 90s were awesome for coin-ops. Titles like NBA JAM, Mortal Kombat, TMNT, Lethal Enforcers, and Street Fighter were cash cows. Good times. I had birthday parties where my friends and I went to the mall and my Mom kept us primed with quarters.

I always thought it was funny how Tilt always put price tags on their machines around the holidays. They were usually a couple thousand each. I think there would have been hell to pay if someone bought the NBA JAM. I must have pumped $300+ into NBA JAM and NBA JAM TE. Daytona got a lot of my money too.

Aside from those, bowling alleys and the laser tag place in Springfield Mall had arcades. Chuck E Cheeses in Annandale and Fairfax also had a great selection. I was a sucker for the USA vs. USSR hockey game.

Tilt was upstairs in the same hallway as the "old food court" Near the exit/entrance doors of that hallway.

Ahh I remember the price tags!! Being a kid you can't even imagine how you would get that much money.

Killer Instinct was my fav game at the Tysons tilt.

I enjoyed the value that you got out of "The Main Event" at Tysons. It was a wrestling game that only cost a quarter, and you could easily last 10-15 minutes if you were good. Contrast that with NBA JAM, which was $2 for ~10 minutes and any booger-eater in the joint could join in at any time and ruin your game vs. the CPU.

Yep. I never got the full story, but I heard that the arcade had a lot of gang and drug issues. I was told there was a few drug busts there and eventually just got shut down.

All the times I was in there I never saw any gang members.
There were always a bunch of ravers in there.
Nobody in there had any issues with anybody else.
We were all too busy gaming.
I dont have anything against electronic music.
I just prefer my music to be made by humans instead of computers.

Just some friendly emulator recommendations:

I recommend Kega Fusion over DGen.

Dgen is very, very dated and the guy who develops Kega Fusion (Steve Snake) actually made the Sega 32X version of NBA Jam TE And Mortal Kombat 2 - ironic since pictures of the cabinets where shown in this thread, thought I'd let you all know. Don't recommend the latest version due to some glitches (latest version is 3.64) but the previous version is better (3.63) and he is still involved with making video games today.

Very solid Genesis, 32X and Sega CD emulation btw.

SSF is better than Yabuse from what I gather - only used SSF, but Saturn emulation requires a pretty good computer. But if you like it, I love it.

SNES9x and ZSNES...hmm. I prefer ZSNES, but if you have a nice computer and want very accurate emulation, BSNES is pretty good, but oh how I wish it had a fast forward feature.

I played this game non-stop in the late 80's, but by then Nintendo was making video arcade places a second tier activity. I remember once sitting behind this adult who was just kicking ass - it was like watching Rambo in action. I don't think he died the entire game. At the end my fried said "How did you do that???" His answer - "Vietnam". I doubt it was true, but when you're 14 it sounds believable.

I used to go to Tilt every Friday after school between 1993 - 1995. I had a boyfriend that played MK and MK II a lot, he always wore a backwards "Friends Dont Let Friends Drive Fords" hat. Those Auntie Annie's Pretzels guys were the shit at Mortal Kombat, there was always a crowd. They'd saunter in, school fifteen guys in a row for half an hour, then casually stroll out sipping on a soda from their work.

There were plenty of kids in there during school hours. Thats one of the reasons why I think the mall management shut that place down.

If removed from the arcade cabinet the gun from that game could easily be mistakened for a real one especially at night.

LOL at the username "Nintendo Power Subscriber". I had a subscription to. As well as a subscription to the Nintendo Fun Club magazine that came out quarterly before it became Nintendo Power. I think I have the very first Nintendo Power mag laying around somewhere. It sounds lame now, but it wasn't in 1988.

Necropost.

I played all the arcades in the DC area but Playtime had the cutest skinny little hotties in 1983.

If you ever saw MAR or MCJ as the high score of a game, that was me.

My buddy was COB.

Never got into robotron or galaga but ruled tron, zoo keeper, crazy climber, turbo, pole position, and, more importantly, the pinball games like black hole.

I just got done kicking the crap out of "theater of magic" pinball machine not 10 minutes ago.

Yeah...I'm still a hardcore gamer and am available to deliver airframe pepperidge to any dweebs in Aces High or Warbirds Freehost combat flight simulator.
