Stock up on goodies. Invite your friends over with plans to stay all night.
Crash and burn on the couch (or floor) if necessary and for crying out loud,
DONT get behind the wheel of a car. Screw the bars and nightclubs. Thank the
cops who are keeping the drunks and druggies off the road. Wake up in the
morning with a hangover and enjoy the company of your friends. I always
fix a buffet style breakfast for them in the morning and deliver them
home in a heap if necessary. That way, we can do it again next year and
nobody has to hire a lawyer. (or a mortician)

And, I might add I've been the DD on New Years a couple of times. It's very entertaining. Plus you can pull that trump card all year long. Everybody remembers who was the DD on New Years, but forgets the rest of the year.

Being the DD can be very entertaining when you're just watching all the shenanigans, without the alcohol induced haze. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, when we go out I'm generally the DD because I know that I have the required self control. Furthermore, I don't trust anyone else not to let the festivities get the best of them. I've seen the DD get buzzed a few too many times, which is never good. Plus as an added bonus, I'm not hungover the next day and can fully enjoy the bowl games.
