Got ya, they discontinued the program 5 years ago, lack of money, but theres several hundred of the signs up so its cheaper to leave them up then take them down, and if they get the money to continue it they got ya. The law authorizing it is still on the books

Drones ? Someone say Drones ? There's a lot involved to do it.

When I see those signs, I always picture an F-16:
"Victor-Sierra-Poppa-One to base, target acquired"
"Base to Victor-Sierra-Poppa-One, you are clear for weapons hot"
"Victor-Sierra-Poppa-One to base, acknowledged"
<pause"
"Victor-Sierra-Poppa-One to base, one Hellfire released...yep, he's toast. RTB."

Occasionally makes me lift my right foot a bit...

And for those of you wondering how it's done...You'll notice white stripes periodically painted across the highway. Speed is a computation of distance divided by time. With the stripes, the State Police have thus established a known distance between two points. All that's left to do is to time a vehicle between the points, do the math and radio down to a trooper on the ground. Also known as VASCAR.

By the way, you know where else are two fixed points? The Express Lanes on 95, 395 and 495. I expect data collection from the toll gantries to be used for speeding driven revenue to be legislated any day now...

Aw, I like my version better. Even if you are right.

Way back when EZ-Pass started (when it was still FasToll), a cow-orker refused to get one for that very reason. Acourse, he tended toward triple-digit speeds in his RX-8, so the cops didn't exactly need high tech to note that he was speeding!

I've been here for 60 years and have never hard of an aircraft actually being used to enforce speed limits. Signs are cheap. Paint is cheap. Airplanes, not so cheap.

Back in the seventies Route 17 and 13(Eastern Shore) were monitored by Cessna 170’s.

Exactly.

That never crossed the tiny minds that invented this "sexy" shit. The other thing that eluded them was how easy it is for a trooper to simply sit on the shoulder/AVO lane or behind a bridge abutment and just write speeding tickets all day. That has largely stopped on the bulk of I95 because of the higher speed limit, the natural congestion and the danger to troopers of stopping a vehicle out there.
