Overuse and misuse of the word “literally”

So many teenage girls overuse and misuse this word chronically. (yeah, other demographics do too — but not to the same degree.)

Not a huge deal, but definitely a big pet peeve of mine.

Girls: appear more intelligent: STOP using the word!

I know, it figuratively drives me up the wall.

"actually" is another dumb one.

Answering questions starting with "actually"

Like, "What did you do this summer?"

"Actually, I stayed here"

Or something like that.

Maybe they think it makes them sound sophisticated?

There is nothing wrong with the word “actually.” When uses properly, it has a very specific connotation that really has no alternative. It means that something “is” with a slight perception of “unexpected.”

What does shock me though is how often people misuse it in a professional environment. People end up being quite condescending without necessarily meaning to be. For example, after the dumb or lazy guy in your office says something smart and someone else replies, “that is actually a good idea,” they think they are being complementary...but what they really mean is, “wow, you are usually an idiot and I’m expressing surprise that you said something of value.”

Sure, but there's nothing wrong with any of these words, when used properly.

I used to threaten to start a company drinking game: every time someone said "actually" on a customer call, we'd take a shot. Everyone was afraid to play!
