Why is it Colleges can't learn to reduce cost like anyone else has? Aren't they supposed to be SMART?

Degrees are no longer just a credential, they are a product. The better the institute, the better the “product” that is the degree. At least in the eyes of employers and society at large. As such, colleges and universities can charge an arm and a leg, and give you the finger when you run back complaining how your degree did not help you advance.

Colleges' tuition is set under the communist mantra of "from each, according to his ability, to each, according to his need".

Tuition for whites and asians is very high so that they can give a full scholarship to every Black kid who can recite the alphabet.

College tuition is high because moron TEA Party types pushed state legislatures to stop using tax money to fund state schools. The result has hardly been surprising. Ass-backward economic ideas never work.

LOL! College costs nothing, it pays and pays and pays year after year. My Dad sent me to a Virginia college for 4 years and it only cost him $85,000. My very first job started me at $87,000 a year. I am now making just under 100,000.

Yes, yes. If you think education is expensive, try being ignorant. Which, of course, a whole lot of posters on this forum are indeed doing.

College costs are high because college kids (from Fairfax, in particular) require comfortable accommodations, state-of-the-art gym and facilities, well groomed landscapes, plenty of parking, gourmet food options, and service, service, service. A generation of kids brought up by helicopter mothers who now can't think for themselves and think "roughing it" is waking up at 10 am on Saturday.

Tuition is high because you have some overpaid full professors getting paid to show up maybe once a semester while they have a staff of assistants actually teaching their classes. If I am paying to be taught by Bill Gates, he better actually show up for my class every day. If not, I want a discount.

Student loan companies drive up the prices for college.
They want you to be mired in debt your whole life
These finance companies lobby against discharging student loans thru bk.
If you can’t get a scholarship, don’t use student loans.

Do they? If they are so shit hot in their field why did they take a teaching job? They should be able to earn a living actually working in their field of interest and not have to be "troubled" with teaching.

If I could do it all over again I would not waste a dime
on what has become mostly a bastion of Socialists Professors
trying to brainwash young minds and go directly to work.
You can educate yourself with the right books and attend
specific classes that can hone your skills at a local
college very inexpensively.

Doh. You've never been to university, have you?

Classes are a necessary evil. Professors mostly choose academia so they can do research in their fields, not to make big bucks or to actually teach. That doesn't mean they all hate teaching, or do a poor job (though surely some do)--just that it isn't the point.

As for the question in the Subject: line -- where's the incentive to do so? The average suburban parents think the more expensive the school, the better the education must be.

The only part of that that's true is that higher-priced schools SOMETIMES mean better classmates, which makes for a better learning experience. Having said that, any university can give a decent education. Or a crappy one.

Disclaimer: I grew up in an academic family, although I dropped out after one term and am in the business world. So I have (one man's) perspective on both sides.

As a hiring manager, I'd never judge someone based on how highly rated their university was; if anything, I might downcheck someone from a high-end school, to be honest.

I can comment on public universities since I spent almost my entire adult life as a student or working at one. Public universities used to take on lots of undergrads, educate them with grad students, and flush two-thirds of them out without a degree.

Now public universities are very selective, have relatively small undergrad classes, taught by more faculty and not grad students. Also the number of administrators has grown by 500 to 800 percent over the past 30 years.

You know, Colleges have "an open checkbook" from government, and more than 10,000 students

That means you could say, "George Mason University Government", and start ignoring fairfax county and stop paying them taxes.

Because that's EXACTLY what Fx Co Gov did to VA years ago.

Turn about is fair play.

Tuition will not cease climbing until all non whites share some of the cost of tuition. This does not apply only to University but private elementary schools as well. Parochial / religious schools raise rates so that non whites get free attendance

"Aren't they supposed to be SMART?"

Colleges are make-believe worlds that have nothing to do with real life, staffed by those not good enough to compete in real life.

They are parasites, full of their own self-assigned importance and relevance; living in their own fantasy world paid for by our taxes.

Here is what they think of the people who actually work every day to support them:

Because people expect to get a pay increase for doing the same job for 30 or 40 years. In most fields, they would be replaced with younger, cheaper, and more current talent.

You work hard in high school in order to get into a good college. Some get into a good college. The rest go off to become junior-level private sector flunkies.

You work hard in college in order to get into a good grad school. Some get into a good grad school. The rest go off to become mid-level private sector flunkies.

You work hard in grad school in order to get into a good doctoral program. Some get into a good doctoral program. The rest go off to become senior-level private sector flunkies.

You work hard in a doctoral program in order to get a plum position in business, government, or academia. Some get a plum position in business, government, or academia. The rest go off to become managers of senior-level private sector flunkies.

At every level, the best and the brightest move on up the ladder while the losers get drained away into the private sector. This explains a lot about who's who in the world.

If it is the SAME JOb, you don't need "current talent". A 30 year employee is someone who is getting the job done, and not a flake who quits after 6 months causing added expenses for training, etc.

We had to add Black students to increase diversity.
We had to add Diversity Staff to recruit Black Students.
We had to offer free tuition to attract Black Students.
We had to add Black Studies programs so Black Students could get a degree without dumbing down every other program.
We had to hire Black faculty to increase diversity and to teach the Victim Studies/Hate Whitey classes.
We had to hire people to tutor and hold the Blacks' hands through every course so their drop-out rate wouldn't hurt our Dept of Ed numbers.

Someone has to pay for all this!

great explanation....but the other reason tuition is going up is that tenured professors have to make more money each year. and since a tenured professor cant be fired costs, go up each year...

1. Colleges are big business.
2. Counselors are trained by consulting firms that use the same techniques as pharmaceutical reps.
3. “Counselors” receive a base PLUS a percentage of what they charge the student.
4. Both political parties BENEFIT from the student loan market.
Liberals can recruit in colleges, republicans get paid financing the loans AND the money they get tranching the loans as investment vehicles.
5. Exact same players as CDO housing crisis!

Colleges are run by liberals. There's no such thing as a liberal who can live within his means. This is why they like taxes so much, so they can spend everyone else's money.

College costs are ridiculous because we made the money available.

The goal of making sure every kid CAN attend college is a noble one, but here's a thought experiment:

You have three people in a boat. One has an apple, one has a dollar, and one has five dollars. What is the value of the apple?

It's the only food, so it'll sell for five dollars.

Now, lend everyone in the boat an additional $10.

What do you think just happened to the price of the apple?

Hey Einstein, your "thought experiment" just described inflation. College costs are up 20% every 4 years even *after* inflation adjustments have been made. Dipshit.

Kavanaugh has said nothing about having to pay for law school out of his own families wealth, and that today illegals are borrowing more than a lawschool degree he bought and "paying it back" using DNC government jobs.

It worries me.

Concerned about college cost? If you can live local with your parents, go to George Mason as a commuter student. Tuition and fees are $12,462 annually. Virginia Tech is $13,620 annually, and then you have $8,408 room and board to contend with.

For a bachelors degree, roughly $12.5k * 4 isn't bad, so long as you have a local place to stay. It's worth it. Mason graduates command competitive salaries in a variety of their majors (https://president.gmu.edu/survey-mason-graduates-earn-highest-salaries-in-dozens-of-majors/), and the median starting salary is $54,700.

George Mason doesn't have the "prep" of UVA, but if you can tolerate living with your parents for four years, and they can tolerate you :), saving tens of thousands on room and board is pretty smart.

Don't go to colleges you can't afford. There's little reason to.

Small additional note: If you go to George Mason, be a serious student. There are wonderful resources there to get an outstanding education, but also plenty of students who go off the rails, and whose influence might take you with them.

Focus, study hard, and enjoy the benefits of your (cheap) education.

Several Colleges in the DC metro area will be FREE in 5-10 years.

In the meantime, find a job where your employer will commit to pay some or all of your tuition.

The vast majority of scholarships come from private donations, not colleges or university's operating budgets.

So, pretty much negates your entire thought.

Clinton and Obama certainly did change the LOAN STRUCTURE - and it included illegal aliens as well as "minorities". the enrollment clearly shows it. and the insinuation that "people who have money to donate don't like white people - they donate by race" is struck out entirely.

therefore - Clinton and Obama loan structure changes, and all the news of State governments going into fake loan crisis (knowing the loans WILL NOT, NOT be paid - cheating the taxpayer and infact a crime) is the only plausible explanation

Colleges people teach to reduce business operating costs.

Costs have sky rocketd since Bill Clinton made laws giving government over-reach in to running schools and "making government the only true certifier of degrees".

That is the topic.

MONEY is the TOPIC.

RISING COSTS BY PEOPLE WHO SAY THEY KNOW HOW TO REDUCE COSTS IS THE ISSUE

Colleges are operated by leftwing socialists. Socialists can never manage money. Spend, spend, spend! Current favorite money pit: Black Studies. Excuse to hire low IQ Blacks and prop up diversity numbers.

"Smart" would be realizing that you're not "saving tens of thousands" at all. Room and board are still being covered out of the deep pockets of Mom and Dad.

There's little reason to go to any college at all unless you are willing to work for your education. It'll be good practice for all the work you'll have to do in order to have a decent career after grad school.
